The book is a fount of knowledge regarding the historiography-and thus the history itself-of Sindh in the late medieval and early modern eras. It takes us on board to witness its repeated invasions; the development of its resilient Sufic tradition and its Arab/Persian literature; and its rule and misrule by successive foreign dynasties leading up to the mighty Mughals themselves. We also learn of Mughal India's interaction with neighbouring Safavid Persia and Ottoman Turkey. All this is transmitted to us through the chronicles of courtiers, diplomats, military commanders, scholars, Sufis, and poets who were contemporaries of that period. It discusses the emergence of new historiographical trends under the Mughal rule in Sindh which gradually strengthened and crystallized in the field of knowledge and scholarly activities.

Fatima Meer (1928—2010) was not widely recognized outside her country; however, she needed no introduction in South Africa. She stood as one of the most prominent leaders in the Liberation Movement of Indian origin. A distinguished academic, a prolific writer, and a passionate political activist, she was, above all, a tireless advocate for social justice and human rights. Additionally, she was a close friend and confidante of Nelson Mandela and authored his biography, Higher Than Hope: The Authorized Biography of Nelson Mandela (Hamish Hamilton, 1990).Recipient of several international awards, Fatima was nominated in 2004 as one of the fifty greatest South Africans. In 1999, she was listed among the top '100 Women Who Shook South Africa.' Despite being banned three times by the apartheid government, shot at, and imprisoned, she remained a fearless anti-apartheid fighter until freedom was won. Fiercely independent, she was a compelling character of Muslim and Indian heritage who left a profound impact on the history of South Africa's Liberation Movement. Her life story and contributions should be preserved for future generations.

There are several studies on Pakistan's external relations but none of them paint the picture on as wide a canvas as the one chosen for this work. Most studies deal with bilateral relations; however, the scope of this work is much wider. This book examines Pakistan's relations with India, China, the United States, and Afghanistan and several other countries in a dynamic framework. The author looks at Pakistan's external relations from several disciplinary angles and explains that it is difficult to fully comprehend economic changes—in particular, the influences on the making of public policy—without understanding the political, social, and cultural environment in which Pakistan's economy functions. Some of the topics discussed in the book are demography; geography; migrations; religion; climate change and global warning; American-China trade war; America's conflict with Iran; India's decision to absorb Kashmir as a 'territory' of the Indian Union; and the impact of international migration on the political systems in several Western nations.

Serving at three places in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, during the critical period between 1969 and 1971, Syed Shahid Husain saw the events unfold and presents in this book an analysis of the roles that each of the principal actors—Yahya Khan, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto—. He saw history in the making, and the five decades that have passed since have not affected his conclusions. Facts are unchangeable, and it is only the opinions that differ. As Macaulay said, 'Facts are the mere dross of history. It is from the abstract truth which interpenetrates them, and lies latent among them, like gold in the ore, that the mass derives its whole value….' The book also contains some of his personal experiences at the time including an account of the killer cyclone that hit East Pakistan in 1970.

The book covers a variety of topics about the Frontier (Khyber Pukhtunkhwa) and its people. It outlines the geography of the province and describes the three major theories about the origin of the Pukhtuns and recounts the Pukhtun code of life—Pukhtu. The author discusses the area's occupation by the Britons in 1849 and examines the Durand Line Agreement (1893), along with its pros and cons. From the uprising against the British in the tribal belt in 1897, the book moves to the formation of the province in 1901 and covers the related constitutional developments. The book discusses the role of the Khudayi Khidmatgar Movement, the Muslim League in the province, and the 1947 referendum. It also analyses the administrative apparatus that prevailed in the erstwhile tribal areas and describes the political careers and educational services of Sahibzadah Abdul Qayyum and Abdul Ghaffar Khan. These various themes and issues—placed in their geo-political, strategic, and historical contexts—present a comprehensive overview in this well-researched book by one of the top scholars of the country in the discipline of history.

History, Memory, Fiction proposes an examination of several contemporary novels and memoirs of leading Pakistani and Kashmiri writers, considering them as historical fiction, in other words as works that are based on real-world facts, but as fiction are able to go further in creating what have been called 'possible worlds', ultimately creating a plausible story that might well be a true story. By blurring the frontier between history and fiction, unconstrained by concerns of referential 'truth', these novels and memoirs are able to provide us with fresh insights and moral orientation while suggesting that the past—which is not the same as history—must be given meaning in our present if we wish to create better possible futures. Thus, these writers are engaged in active social critique, providing readers with a broader perspective of historical consciousness.

It analyses and discusses them in context to the judgments of the superior courts of the US, the UK, Pakistan and India as well the judgments rendered by the courts in Australia, Canada, and Germany. This book is a unique collection of papers on the languages and cultures in the northern areas of Pakistan and the surrounding regions. In a single volume, the editors have compiled the work of a variety of national and international scholars, long concerned with the linguistic aspects of the many languages discussed here. The basis for most of the articles is material collected in areas difficult to access, presented here in print for the first time. The material sometimes concerns languages likely to soon disappear. The different chapters reflect many of the complex regions and languages of northern Pakistan and its surrounding areas, thus being of interest to linguistic scholars across the world. This volume is dedicated to the memory of Carla Radloff, who was a well-known contributor to studies of the languages of northern Pakistan until her untimely death in 2012.

In this series of illuminating essays, Claire Chambers explores global literature, with a special focus on texts from Pakistan and its diaspora. Highlighting its quality and urgency, and authors' bold treatment of hot topics like Islamophobia, racism, and the culture industry, Chambers formulates a strong case for drawing this writing into the mainstream English canon. Chambers' voice is incisive and compelling as she analyses emerging as well as established writers working in various genres. This makes Rivers of Ink a necessary, clear summons for expansion to the ?eld of contemporary global literature.

Distilling nearly forty years of experience drinking the second most consumed beverage in the world, Jürgen Wasim Frembgen's travelogue, A Thousand Cups of Tea, is a journey through the production, preparation, and consumption of tea from North Africa to South Asia. With deep insights into diverse habits, customs, preferences, and traditions surrounding this practise, the author delves into painting a cross-cultural panorama of a simple activity through detailed vignettes and historical anecdotes based on personal observations and thorough ethnographic research. Woven amongst a combination of both culinary and cultural literature, this simple, accessible knowledge allows the reader to explore the brewing herbs not only as a mixture of hot refreshment, but also as a social custom. This book is of interest to a diverse readership-ranging from anthropology students, casual readers, and tea connoisseurs. It is concurrently an important reference material and valuable addition to the literature on the anthropology of food.

Deconstructing Hegemony is mainly informed by the deconstructionist approach, as it unravels literature, theory, and history writing, in addition to ideology, lexicon, media, and politics. The readings are also informed by, among others, Michel Foucault, Edward Said, Abdelwahab Elmessiri, and Noam Chomsky. Deconstruction, or questioning oppositions, as the recurrent approach, pairs with contrapuntalism or counterpoint; epistemology or theory of knowledge; hermeneutics or interpretation; ecocriticism or literature and nature; geopolitics; cartography or map-drawing; demography or population; marginalization or minority studies; as well as normalizing discourse or stigmatizing difference or any deviation from 'set' standards. In Part I of this book, El-Meligi analyses case studies in deconstructive literature by comparing works of Eastern and Western authors such as David Grossman, Mourid Barghouti, and Louise Erdrich. Part II probes deconstructive theory, philosophy, historiography, and lexicon that pertain to the geopolitical term, the Middle East. Among the writers analysed are Chomsky, Pappé, and Finkelstein.

This volume places the spotlight on an important moment in history. The late 1960s was a time of profound change around the world, and the contributions included here from Pakistan's leftist intellectuals based in London, speak volumes about the implications of the turbulence and the promise for a better future in relation to Pakistan. More than five decades on, the promise of a better tomorrow looks as far away as ever, but the turbulence has returned with a vengeance. The newly written contributions reflect on the significance of this leftist journal at the time and the impact of those ideas and discourses on the politics that came to be.

These are the memoirs of Khan Bahadur Abdur Rahman Khan (1891-1980), a civil engineer in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP; now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), during the British Indian period. A member of the Imperial Service of Royal Engineers, his memoirs provide a riveting account of the turbulent historical period in the NWFP, which saw the decline of the British Raj from its zenith, under Queen Victoria, to the exit of the British, the Partition of India, and the creation of Pakistan. His narrative records the often-violent political struggle for independence, the gradual decline of the Raj and its institutions, the consequences of the shifting power structures under the various reforms, and the tussle between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League to win over the loyalties of the Pathans. His narrative is rich with anecdotes and insights about events and the people who shaped the course of this history such as Sir George Cunningham, Sir Olaf Caroe, Sir Ambrose Dundas, Allama Iqbal, Dr Khan Sahib, Ghaffar Khan, and Khan Abdul Qayum Khan. As a young engineer he was instrumental in saving the city of Dera Ismail Khan from being swept away by the raging waters of the Indus River in floods and he undertook long and arduous treks in Waziristan and Balochistan escorted by troops lead by British officers to survey and develop dams and irrigation projects. He made a significant contribution to the irrigation development of the NWFP and Balochistan. After Independence he was appointed a member of the delegation to negotiate the Indus Water Dispute with India. Besides providing an intimate political and social history of the changing times, hitherto not available in contemporary works, the author is widely recognized as an eminent engineer and his historical perspective on the water resources development of arid regions is a useful reference for those interested in working on these issues in Pakistan.

This book is a compilation of previously unpublished and expunged portions of Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan by Hector Bolitho, the first biography of the Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and Bolitho's own diary and notes, and correspondence with functionaries of the Government of Pakistan and highly placed individuals in Britain, India, and Pakistan who had known Jinnah personally. The book also includes the English and American reviews of Bolitho's celebrated and influential biography. The volume is a treasure trove of oral history concerning Pakistan's founding father. Bolitho's interviews with people who had known Jinnah personally in various capacities, and at various stages of his life, recorded within four to five years of his death, have preserved for posterity a good deal of information and historically important material that would have otherwise been lost forever. This contribution is, in fact, more valuable and has greater significance than Bolitho's published biography. These texts comprise material that the author was not allowed to include in his biography but is presented in this volume for the benefit of scholars and interested readers. In Quest of Jinnah provides a three-dimensional view of the original published version and offers fresh and authentic insights into the personality and politics of Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

West Pakistan, on 15 August 1947, was less than half its present size. Nearly a year of negotiations, arguments, threats, and even chance, brought nine princely states into the Pakistani fold. Thereafter followed a long and staggered process of integration. Using hitherto unused and inaccessible primary sources, this path-breaking book completes the story of the creation of Pakistan. In charting the accession and integration of the princely states, this book shows the complicated and often botched processes of the consolidation of Pakistan.
