Two hundred photobooks across five decades—a raucous, one-of-a-kind tour through Parr's monumental history with the medium.Published with PhotoBook Museum, Cologne. As a photographer, publisher, writer, collector and image editor, with an eye trained on the absurdities of our global consumer and leisure culture, Martin Parr (1952–2025) has been bringing the photobook into the consciousness of contemporary photography since the turn of the millennium, publishing more than 200 books over the course of five decades. Grand Hotel Parr accompanies the first comprehensive photobook retrospective on Parr, organized by the PhotoBookMuseum and the Neues Museum in Cologne, Germany. In an elaborate staging inspired by the appearance of a hotel complex, the titular exhibition invites visitors to explore over 200 of the artist's photobooks. The tour through the various rooms of the hotel, such as the billiard room, the dining room and the fashion boutique, picks up on various themes from Parr's publications, creating a bizarre world that vacillates between ostentation and kitsch. Grand Hotel Parr showcases photographs from this one-of-a-kind exhibition as well as a bevy of essays by scholars and curators who explore Parr's storied history with the medium.

The work of Juan Rulfo (1917–1986) is doubtless the Mexican literary creation which has received the greatest acclaim both in Mexico and abroad. The novel “Pedro Páramo” underwent a long gestation. Rulfo mentioned it for the first time in a letter in 1947, and was able to work on it in 1953–1954 thanks to a grant from the Centro Mexicano de Escritores. Excerpts were published in three maga¬zines in 1954, before the novel appeared in book form in 1955. This masterpiece has numbered Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, and Susan Sontag among its admirers. “Pedro Páramo” evokes the very essence of Mexico through the most advanced literary forms and techniques of the twentieth century. Few works affect a Mexican reader as deeply as this novel, which also holds a place as a classic of world literature. It has been translated into almost fifty languages and new versions appear every year.

¿Te bastan esos botones, o necesitás todo el costurero?”This second of Julio Cortázar’s almanac-books was first published in Mexico in 1969 and designed by Julio Silva. In an interview with himself, Cortázar described the contents: “In Último round there is a ‘Homage to Alain Resnais’ which can be read in a permutational fashion, in such a way that its meaning changes even as the initial atmosphere of L’année dernière à Marienbad is preserved. There is also a farewell to Theodor W. Adorno, who has converted to Catholicism; there are several stories, long and short; and there is a sort of diary of a day in my life in the Provençal village of Saignon. There is a defense of Salvador Dalí (ah!); there is a general analysis of the problem of eroticism in Latin American literature; there is an essay on the short story and its surroundings, a subject which continues to preoccupy me and about which not much has been written. Are these samples enough, or do you want the whole sewing basket?”

"Pedro Páramo is one of the best novels of Spanish-language literature, and even of literature." —Jorge Luis BorgesPublished with Fundación Juan Rulfo.Juan Preciado makes a promise to his dying mother that he will travel to the town of Comala in search of his father, the titular character. Instead, Juan encounters a ghost town that relays to him the fragmented history of his father's cruel and violent life, and how he led Comala to ruin. Though met with an unwelcome critical reception in the years after its publication, Pedro Páramo has ascended into the canon of Mexican literature and magical realism writ large, thanks in no small part to its star-studded list of devotees. Gabriel García Márquez called it "the most beautiful novel ever written in the Spanish language," while Susan Sontag proclaimed: "The goal of every writer's life is to produce one great book—that is, an enduring work—and that is what Rulfo achieved."Commemorating the 70th edition of its original publication, this Spanish-language edition of Pedro Páramo includes unmissable archival material, including more than 100 cover designs from translated editions in over 30 languages. A charming black-and-white postcard of Rulfo placed between the pages provides a glimpse into the character and personality of the "father of magical realism."Juan Rulfo (1917–86) was born in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The corpus of his narrative work is his short story collection El llano en llamas, his novella El gallo de oro and the novel Pedro Páramo. He was a member of the Mexican Academy of Language. In 1983 he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature and in 1985 he was named Doctor honoris causa by the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Published with Museo Frida Kahlo. When Frida Kahlo dies, Diego Rivera, Frida's husband, ex-husband and widower, asks the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn the Casa Azul into a museum so that the people of Mexico can visit it and admire the artist's work. Pellicer selected Frida's paintings that were in the house, as well as some drawings, photos, books and ceramics, preserving the spaces as the couple had adapted them to live and work. The rest of the objects, clothes, documents, drawings, letters and more than six thousand photographs that Frida collected throughout her life, were kept in the bathrooms converted into cellars. This formidable collection was hidden for more than half a century. A few years ago they decided to open the cellars, cabinets and trunks that protected it. The set of photographic images is a treasure that reveals the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only in what the images tell but also in the annotations in the margin, and allows speculation about their phobias and attractions, it is even possible to document their family origins. Photography was always present for Frida, her father Guillermo Kahlo was one of the great photographers of the early 20th century in Mexico, of whom she kept some images of colonial architecture and a good number of self-portraits. In Frida's collection there is a list of great photographers: Man Ray, Brassaï, Martin Munkacsi, Pierre Verger, George Hurrel, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Gisèle Freund and many others, including Frida Kahlo herself. . It is probable that she took several of the photos in the collection, although we are sure of her authorship only in a few that were closed in 1929.

Portraits of uncommon beauty from the author of the acclaimed La CucarachaIn Solus Volume I, South African photographer Pieter Hugo (born 1976) reflects on the values implied by the fashion industry’s shifting aesthetics through portraits of street-cast models found in diverse locations such as London, Paris, New York and South Africa. Hugo found himself captivated by sitters with unconventional and atypical looks, particularly before they underwent the machinations of wardrobe, makeup and hair. Drawn to this uniqueness and recalling the sense of not-belonging that is part of the intense experience of youth, Hugo’s invitation to the models was: “simply present yourself.” The resulting photographs embrace vulnerability and frailty as much as they do the agency and idealism of their subjects. Hugo’s typological study questions fashion’s commodification of youth and the “outsider,” while embracing the beauty of peculiarity worn with acute awareness and the paradox of craving both difference and conformity.

Set in the world of cockfighting and conceived as a film project, it is probably the lesser-known work of the Mexican author. Despite this ignorance, the literary valuation is at the same level as "Pedro Páramo" and "Llano en Llamas". On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Juan Rulfo, RM publishes a special edition of "El gallo de oro" to which other stories that complement it are incorporated. The film script of "The secret formula", two early stories by Juan Rulfo: "Life is not very serious in its things" and "A piece of night", and also the one entitled "Castillo de Teayo". Also included is a letter from Rulfo to his wife, Clara Aparicio, in which Rulfo makes a harsh reflection on the nature of a heartless economic system. Finally, the reader will find nine texts that originally appeared in the collection of texts Los cuadernos de Juan Rulfo, an edition that is out of print.

Seventeen short stories by Juan Rulfo, including “Diles que no me maten”Published with Fundación Rulfo. This special edition of El llano en llamas commemorates the 70th anniversary of its publication. It contains the definitive text of the titular short story together with its first version, originally published in 1950. All in all, this book contains 17 stories published by Rulfo beginning in 1945, when “Nos han dado la tierra” appeared in the literary reviews América and Pan. Rulfo described the progress of his work in letters to his fiancée, Clara Aparicio. In 1951 he published a seventh story in América, “Diles que no me maten” (which Elias Canetti considered one of the finest stories ever written and Günter Grass admired as well). Thanks to a first grant from the Centro Mexicano de Escritores, Rulfo was able to finish eight more stories, which appeared with those already published under the general title of El llano en llamas (The Burning Plain). The book was dedicated to Clara.

An intimate reflection on loss, mourning and memory, made manifest through Manenti's spectral black-and-white photographyUpon receiving a large-format camera in 2012, the American photographer Ruth Lauer Manenti (born 1968) at last accessed a poetic sensibility she had first sought within drawing and painting. Her spectral photographs evoke the ephemeral motion of life and the vertiginous memories it impresses. In her new series, 4 Sides of The Table, made from 2022 to 2024, Manenti continues her meditation upon time's passage. The inciting image for this series emerged from an intimate, sorrowful scene: her mother's best friend, June, reading poetry as Manenti's mother lay dying in bed. In the wake of loss, Manenti found within June a maternal replacement. She began photographing June in segmented parts from various angles: hands, legs, front, back, partial views. When June's own daughter unexpectedly died, Manenti, too, became a replacement. Together, Manenti and June document the poignant work of mourning—the effort to preserve the unseen through new material forms.
