Four months to the day he first encountered the boy at Walmart, the last of Phil Pendelton's teeth fell out.At first glance, Phil Pendleton and his son Adam are just an ordinary father and son, no different from any other. Some might say the father is a little too accommodating given the lack of discipline when the child loses his temper in public. Some might say he spoils his son by allowing him to set his own bedtimes and eat candy whenever he wants. Some might say that such leniency is starting to take its toll on the father, given how his health has declined. What no one knows is that Phil is a prisoner, and that up until a few weeks ago and a chance encounter at a grocery store, he had never seen the child before. But now Adam is in his life, altering and controlling it, and it will take a particular kind of horror to get him out. Because there is nothing ordinary about Adam, or the monsters that come when he calls.

For the last six years, comic legend Frank Tieri has been offering up tales of monsters, both human and supernatural, creeping in the streets of Brooklyn. As it turns out, these big city beasties, be they ghosts, vampires, windigoes or simply human beings bent on revenge, have been responsible for events as widespread as the Coney Island fire of 1911, the ’77 NY blackout, and even the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brooklyn. The “truth” behind all these events is not what the public thinks it is. But thankfully, Tieri is here to set things straight. This includes all six of his stories from John Carpenter’s Tales for A HalloweeNight, including A Haunting Grows in Brooklyn, The Ghosts of Steeplechase, The Beast of Brooklyn Heights, The Brooklyn Basher, The Night the Lights Went Out in Brooklyn and The Cryptid Killers. As an added bonus to the collection, Tieri has penned a seventh story, writing himself into the narrative, to tie these events and characters together. All seven stories are illustrated to perfection by his frequent collaborator Cat Staggs. You’ll never look at New York the same way again.

They settle into a conversation that immediately disturbs young William. It is the story of an elderly man hoping to experience the amusement park one last time to recapture childhood memories, to relish the rapidly fleeting remaining moments.Instead of pleasant memories, each attraction becomes a surreal microcosm of aging and its inherent challenges as bodies and minds begin to break down. Finally, he winds up right back where he started, battered both mentally and physically. Instead of being able to leave the park, he realizes he is trapped in a loop, forced to relive the harrowing experience over and over. At the end of the elderly man’s tale, William is puzzled, concerned, and annoyed, irritated to have had his time wasted on such a story.William quickly realizes that not everything in the coffee shop is as it seems. The elderly man with whom young William has been conversing shares his name. It is William Lincoln. Perplexed and scared now, young William attempts to leave, fleeing through the coffee shop’s front door. When the door closes behind him, William is back in the amusement park, transformed again into his elderly self, still trapped in the loop, forced to reconcile the reality of aging and ultimately, his own mortality.

Dana, a young woman who used to help the police find dead bodies, is driven off a jogging path by a vision of a demonic scarecrow and caught in raging floodwaters. Lightning rips a tree out of a pond and tears a hole in the earth, and Dana is swept down into a massive cavern. When the firefighters pull her out, she tells them astounding news. There’s a house down there. A big one: the House of Usher, described as fiction by Edgar Allan Poe. The house is enormous, ripped into two separate wings (“like the Titanic”) and covered over by a freak layer of ash and lava. And it’s structurally sound, explorable. “It's the 19th century down there.” As the only person who has been down and come out alive, Dana is recruited by government agent Bernice to join an expedition down into the insane wreck of a mansion. The house, like the Titanic, lies in two great pieces, one dry and one flooded. But soon the explorers learn that the house is haunted not just by ghosts, but by time itself, and sometimes the shape of the house alters with sudden violence. And the most dangerous spirit in the House of Usher is intent on using the expeditioners to unlock a powerful secret. Fans of LOCKE AND KEY and HOUSE OF MYSTERY can’t miss this brand-new haunted exploration.
