An indispensable introduction to the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe, whose distinctive vision and pioneering approach to painting nature offer a unique way of looking at the world and cement her reputation as the ‘mother of American modernism'.Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) is one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. She had a unique way of looking at the world, paring back the beauty of nature to capture its essence with fluid and skilful brushstrokes that revealed her expert handling of line, colour and composition. This book is a compelling introduction to the life and work of an extraordinary artist. Beginning with her early study of traditional painting techniques, it charts the significant moment when she chose to break with the established conventions and forge her own path by experimenting with abstraction. Touching on her many travels, including to the rugged deserts of New Mexico that immediately became a powerful source of inspiration for her work, this book provides a rich overview of the radical abstractions, dynamic landscapes and vibrant botanical studies that cemented O'Keeffe as an innovator in the development of American modernism.

Experience the intensely colourful work of British artist Hurvin Anderson.Hurvin Anderson’s first major solo show brings together more than 60 of his vibrant paintings, spanning the artist’s entire career, from his days as a student to his most recent works.Through colour-drenched landscapes and interiors, Anderson meanders back and forth across the Atlantic, between the UK and the Caribbean. The youngest of eight children, he was the first to be born in the UK after his family left Jamaica for Birmingham in the 1960s. As a result, Anderson’s work reflects on his experiences of belonging and diaspora. Thanks to his profoundly atmospheric use of composition to explore the markers of identity, this exhibition confirms Anderson’s standing as one of the most important contemporary painters of a generation.

A comprehensive look at the work of the groundbreaking photographer, foregrounding her importance as a surrealist artist.Lee Miller (1907–77) assumed many roles over the course of her remarkable life – from avant-gardist to commercial photographer to war correspondent and photojournalist – and to each of these roles she brought her unique artistic sensibility. Though she was intimately connected with many of the leading figures associated with surrealism, including Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, and Max Ernst, and participated in major exhibitions of her time, Miller was also at times marginalised in the art world as a woman and as a photographer in an era when photography’s status as an art form was not widely accepted. Her genre-bending work incorporated portraiture, fashion, still life, landscape, reportage, and advertising: fearless, poetic and surreal, it reveals a world of uncanny beauty and sensual ambiguity – often with a humorous edge.Drawing on new primary research, Lee Miller features essays exploring every aspect of Miller’s career, from her early years in Paris, New York and Cairo to her wartime journalism and late portraits. Additionally, the British novelist, playwright, and poet Deborah Levy offers a personal reflection on Miller and her art. Beautifully illustrated with hundreds of images, the book provides a comprehensive exploration of Lee Miller, revealing her as one of the most urgent creative voices of the twentieth century.

An entertaining and authoritative examination of the intertwined histories of pop music and the visual arts. How Art Made Pop tells for the first time the worldwide history of art-school rock. The individuals that populate How Art Made Pop may still have become successful musicians if they hadn't studied art, but the kind of musicians that they became, and the kind of music that they became interested in that was predominantly informed and modified by art school attendance. Where once these musicians would have considered themselves entertainers, they now became artists. And hence what they practiced – i.e. popular music – became an art form, not least because they said it was.A remarkable and exhaustive study examining the intertwined histories of pop music and the visual arts, and exploring the exhilarating exchange between art schools and the pop stars that they nurtured (or, occasionally, expelled), How Art Made Pop encompasses the worldwide history of art school rock, and brings the story up to date, featuring a cast including John Lennon, Richard Hamilton and the Independent Group, The Who, The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol, Zappa, Beefheart and West Coast psychedelic culture, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Roxy Music and Bruce Springsteen.

Rachel Whiteread has single-handedly expanded the parameters of contemporary sculpture with her casts of the outer and inner spaces of familiar objects, sometimes in quiet monochrome, sometimes in vivid jewel-like colour. She won the Turner Prize in 1993, the same year as her first large-scale public project, House, a concrete cast of a nineteenth-century terraced house in London's east end. This book, by writer and editor Charlotte Mullins - the first significant survey to examine Whiteread's career to date - has been substantial updated with a new chapter containing 10 major works, including Tate's Turbine Hall installation Embankment and Cabin, Whiteread's first permanent public sculpture in America. Born in London in 1963, Rachel Whiteread is one of Britain's most exciting contemporary artists. Her work is characterised by its use of industrial materials such as plaster, concrete, resin, rubber and metal. With these she casts the surfaces and volume in and around everyday objects and architectural space, creating evocative sculptures that range from the intimate to the monumental.

Emerging in the late 1960s as women artists struggled to 'de-gender' their work to compete in a male-dominated arena, the feminist art movement has played a leading role in the art world over the last five decades. Using the 'female gaze' to articulate socially relevant issues after an era of aesthetic 'formalism', women artists, working in a variety of media, have called to attention ideas around gender, identity and form, criticising the cultural expectations and stereotyping of women, women's struggle for equality, and the treatment of the female body as a commodity. This little book is a short and pithy introduction to some of the most important artworks born out of this movement. 64 outstanding works – from the late 1960s to the present – reflect women's lives and experience, as well as the changing position of women artists, and reveal the impact of feminist ideals and politics on visual culture. Exploring themes such as gender inequality, sexuality, domestic life, personal experiences and the female body, A Little Feminist History of Art is a celebration of one of the most ambitious, influential and enduring artistic movements to emerge from the twentieth century.

The first book to survey the full range of J.M.W. Turner's extraordinary sketchbooks, beginning with his teenage explorations and culminating in the masterful colour studies of his later years. J.M.W. Turner's sketchbooks provide us with a rare opportunity to witness the work processes of an artist of unparalleled importance. They give us a privileged look over Turner's shoulder, allowing us to witness the creation and development of ideas that can be traced through to his most famous paintings. In the absence of detailed written accounts of his extensive travels, the notebooks are also a record of his impressions of the many places he visited across Britain and Europe, and of his life.

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) is one of the leading figures of modern art. His unparalleled cut-outs are among the most significant of any artist’s late works. When ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors as his primary technique to make maquettes for a number of commissions, from books and stained glass window designs to tapestries and ceramics. Taking the form of a ‘studio diary’, the catalogue re-examines the cut-outs in terms of the methods and materials that Matisse used, and looks at the tensions in the works between finish and process; fine art and decoration; contemplation and utility; and drawing and colour.

This is the third of three text books, published in association with the Open University, which offer an innovatory exploration of art and visual culture. Through carefully chosen themes and topics rather than through a general survey, the volumes approach the process of looking at works of art in terms of their audiences, functions and cross-cultural contexts. While focused on painting, sculpture and architecture, it also explores a wide range of visual culture in a variety of media and methods. "1850-2010: Modernity to Globalisation" includes essays which engage directly with topical issues around art and gender, globalisation, cultural difference and curating, as well as explorations of key canonical artists and movements and of some less well-documented work of contemporary artists.

Stunningly beautiful, deeply puzzling, profoundly moving or intensely unsettling – performance art can evoke a wide variety of responses. In this important and richly illustrated book, Catherine Wood, one of the world’s leading curators and writers on the subject, provides the broadest and most up-to-date survey published in recent years.Wood proposes performance not as a genre of art separate from object-making but as an attitude that has infiltrated the entire terrain of contemporary art. From the musical-theatricals of Marvin-Gaye Chetwynd to the public encounters created by Tino Seghal and the social activism of Tania Bruguera, a hugely divergent set of practices has emerged in the past twenty to thirty years which embrace the worlds of sculpture and painting, spectacle and protest. Examining in turn individual, social and object-based approaches in the field, Wood first examines the influential performance art of the 1960s to 1980s: the body art of the Viennese actionists; the raw performances of Yoko Ono and Chris Burden; and the experiments of the Japanese Gutai group among others. She then explores how these sources have been revisited, reformed or rejected by contemporary artists in the twenty-first century. This impressive book encompasses international artists who fall outside the traditional European and North American focus, giving the reader the broadest and most up-to-date insight into the subject yet published.

This beautiful book on Slovak artist, Maria Bartuszová (1936–1996) will introduce readers to the ethereal and other-worldly forms that dominate her oeuvre as well as exploring her influence in a broader global and political context. Discovering her talent in Prague in the ceramic studios at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Bartuszová went on to pioneer the techniques used in experimental and abstract plaster casting. Creating unique methods such as ‘gravistimulated’ and ‘pneumatic’ casting, Bartuszová defined the world of sculpture on her own terms. From rain drops and eggs, to parts of the human body, Bartuszová was interested biomorphology and how she could use the organic nature of casting in plaster to create simultaneously solid and delicate works. With around 100 works, many rarely exhibited before in the UK, this major retrospective will highlight the abstract sculptures and experimental methods of Bartuszová’s beautifully contorted and organic shapes and forms, with this exquistite and accessible catalogue bringing her work to a wider audience. Celebrating the fragile and corporeal, the soft and the solid; this book will provide the perfect introduction to the artist followed by seminal texts to recognise the artist’s legacy of experimental and abstract sculptural works produced predominantly in the context of socialist Czechoslovakia.

Mike Kelley (1954–2012) is widely considered one of the most influential artists of our time, with an irreverent and visionary practice that spanned and mixed performance, installation, drawing, painting, video, photography, sound, text and sculpture.Ghost and Spirit looks at his dense and colourful body of work, from early performances, to his iconic stuffed toy works, and on to his explorations of history, memory and trauma as they haunt our experiences of school or family. Asking prescient questions about how to exist among a world of media images, about the role of art and the artist, and about embodiment, Kelley adopted different personas and mediums, deliberately deflating his own status, and from his own position as a white, heterosexual man in postmodern, capitalist America, he challenged assumptions about identity, class and institutional authority.Bringing together a range of diverse perspectives which summon his ‘lingering influence’ (to paraphrase the artist), this book captures the complexity and persistent relevance of Kelley’s extraordinary practice.

Step into the tender, confessional world of Tracey Emin.Dame Tracey Emin is one of the most important contemporary artists of her generation. It also demonstrates her lifelong commitment to painting, showing her recent work as the culmination of the ways she has channelled her life into her art.Published alongside a major retrospective tracing 40 years of her groundbreaking practice, the publication reproduces Emin's career-defining sensations alongside works never exhibited before. Published to coincide with the first major exhibition at Tate Britain, marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of two of Britain’s most beloved artists, Turner and Constable will give a unique insight into the work of these painters in tandem. Drawing on the very best of their work, the book reveals the ways in which the painters offered two competing and highly original visions of landscape painting, both of which remain powerfully resonant today. Each challenged the artistic norms of their time while also responding to the transformative social, political, economic and environmental developments of the early nineteenth century. Defying convention, they proved that landscape painting could be a vehicle for profound reflections on life as they saw it, paving the way for landscape art to become a vital arena for artistic expression. Despite all their differences, the ways in which these painters presented a radical challenge to artistic norms led them to be described by their contemporaries in similar ways. They were simultaneously celebrated as the two great ‘originals’ of contemporary British art but also attacked as eccentric outsiders whose work was increasingly puzzling and illegible. Turner and Constable will offer a chance to directly compare highlights from the full span of the two artists’ careers. This fresh and ambitious presentation of their work will inspire many to re-connect with these beloved artists anew and equally inspire those who are less familiar with their work to appreciate its vitality, soul and enduring power.

An insightful and much-needed introduction to the life and work of Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, a textile artist dedicated to celebrating the vibrant heritage of the Romani community.Małgorzata Mirga-Tas (b.1978) is a Romani artist and activist who is best known for her colourful textile collages. Made from materials gathered from family and friends, and often created in collaboration with other women, these works depict the everyday life of the Romani people to challenge stereotypical representations and form what she calls ‘microcarriers of history’.This fascinating introduction explores the life and work of Mirga-Tas, contextualising her practice within Romani culture and the community in which she was raised. Bringing attention to the Romani people – their relationships, alliances and shared activities – through her visual storytelling, she also re-imagines artworks from across the centuries that have presented Romani identity in negative ways and transforms them into vibrant images imbued with strength and dignity. These works, informed by her feminist perspective and a sustained engagement with her community, combine realism with visual motifs of Romani culture, and offer a rare opportunity to see and celebrate the Roma on their own terms – both as a contemporary community and as a people with a rich heritage.

James McNeill Whistler rewrote the rules of what it meant to be an artist. A truly global figure, he pioneered innovative techniques, creating astonishingly beautiful, ethereal visions of modern life that would earn him a place as one of the most influential artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.A boldly experimental artist and cosmopolitan celebrity, Whistler disrupted the conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of truth, beauty and progress. Mobilising novel marketing and media possibilities, he was one of the first to understand the force of performance, self-publishing, satire and scandal to advance serious ideas. He built a career unrepentantly at odds with and ahead of his times – too avant-garde for the avant-garde, it was sometimes said.Illustrated with the artist’s world-famous paintings alongside rarely seen works, this sumptuous monograph includes exquisite portraits, drawings, prints and designs, from as early as his teens in St Petersburg to the enigmatic late self-portraits. An international selection of writers look afresh at this audacious artist, casting new light on his unsettled life, and the way he redefined the special value of the artist in a shifting, materialist world.
