Aside from the oceans, the world’s forests constitute the most vital element in maintaining a climate which sustains life on Earth. The forests supply all living creatures with the basic elements essential for our survival. In this volume, experts, scientists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines set out to discuss a broad range of aspects concerning humans’ relationship to forests. What do forests mean to us? Are we destroying them? And what can we do to achieve a healthy relationship between forests and mankind? In order for this relationship to become sustainable—and we claim it must be made so—all stakeholders in politics, industry and science must work together. With this anthology, we make a call for cooperation in sustainable policies towards a sustainable society.

The lay of marie and vignettes in verse is a poetic narrative collection, romantic verse literature work, and historical poetry that blends lyrical storytelling, medieval revival themes, and emotional introspection. Rooted in Anglo-Norman cultural settings and feudal society structures, the work explores the tension between social hierarchy, artistic expression, and personal sorrow. Through evocative verse, it reflects on courtly life, minstrel traditions, and the emotional burdens carried by individuals positioned between classes. Central ideas include love and loss, memory and grief, and the conflict between public expectation and inner emotional struggle. The imagery contrasts festive courtly environments with deep personal anguish, highlighting the role of art as a medium for expressing hidden suffering and emotional truth. The narrative also touches upon historical transitions, noble conflicts, and the lingering effects of past experiences on identity. As part of romantic poetry traditions, historical verse narratives, and literary ballad forms, the work stands as an exploration of how emotion, memory, and artistry intersect within structured social worlds.

This engaging collection of Native American profiles examines these individuals' unique life experiences within the larger context of U.S. history.Native Americans Today: A Biographical Dictionary focuses on the lives of contemporary Native Americans. Such treatments are rare, as most Native American biographies are historical (pre-1900) and cover familiar figures. Profiles collected here are written to be enjoyable as well as instructive, presented as examples of personal storytelling that should be savored not only for their factual content, but also for the humanity they evoke. The book spotlights Native American lives in the United States and Canada, mainly after 1900, though a few older figures are included because their lives evoke strikingly modern themes. The author, an expert on all things Native American, knows (or knew) several of the people in the entries, adding a special vibrancy to the writing. Among those profiled are former U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, activist Eloise Cobell, and controversial political prisoner Leonard Peltier, as well as writers, artists, and musicians. The compilation also includes non-Native Americans whose lives and careers impacted Indian life.

A Laboratory of Her Own: Women and Science in Spanish Culture gathers diverse voices to address women's interaction with STEM fields in the context of Spanish cultural production. This volume focuses on the many ways the arts and humanities provide avenues for deepening the conversation about how women have been involved in, excluded from, and represented within the scientific realm. While women's historic exclusion from STEM fields has received increased scrutiny worldwide in recent years, women within the Spanish context have been perhaps even more peripheral given the complex socio-cultural structures emanating from gender norms and political ideologies dominant in the Spanish nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nonetheless, Spanish female cultural producers have long been engaged with science and technology within the cultural realm, as expressed in literature, art, film, and other areas. Spanish cultural production offers diverse representations of the relationships between women, gender, sexuality, race, and the STEM fields.A Laboratory of Her Own studies representations of Spanish women (including non-white women) and scientific cultural production from the late nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. STEM topics include the environment, biodiversity, temporal and spatial theories, medicine and reproductive rights, neuroscience, robotics, artificial intelligence, and quantum physics. These scientific themes and other issues are analyzed in narratives, paintings, poetry, photographs, science fiction, medical literature, translation, newswriting, film, and other forms.
