Fungi are nature's great networkers, weaving connections, driving transformation and thriving in the most unexpected places. Planet Fungi: A Photographer's Foray is a feast for the eyes, with stunning imagery and pioneering explorations that reveal the intricacies of fungal biology and their ecological significance. It was a chance encounter in the forest with a purple mushroom that completely changed photographer Stephen Axford's view of the world. He became obsessed with documenting the largely unexplored kingdom of fungi and, alongside his partner, Catherine Marciniak, capturing the beauty and diversity of fungi in some of the most remote regions on Earth. There are an estimated 2-5 million species of fungi found all over the world, yet with only around 155,000 described so far, there is so much left to discover. From glowing mushrooms in ancient forests to bizarre, alien-like forms, these extraordinary organisms will challenge how you see the natural world.

The superfamily Chalcidoidea (the jewel wasps) are part of the insect order Hymenoptera. The superfamily comprises more than 27,000 known species, with an estimated total diversity of more than 500,000 species, meaning that the vast majority have yet to be discovered and described. Most of the species are parasitoids, attacking the egg, larval stage or pupal stage of their host, though many other life cycles are known including gall associates and fig pollinators. This landmark volume has been co-authored by world authorities on the systematics and biology of chalcidoid wasps. It provides an introduction to the superfamily, a review of chalcidoid morphology, an overview of the fossil record, a phylogenetic framework for the revised classification of the superfamily, an identification key for the 50 recognized families, and detailed treatments of the individual families. The book consolidates much recent research on the phylogenomics of Chalcidoidea and the fossil record. This research has resulted in substantial changes to their classification, and in a review of all families, the new family groups are presented to the general scientific public for the first time. The book is an historic milestone, presenting a reclassification of the superfamily and a synthesis of knowledge on all aspects of Chalcidoidea that will serve for generations to come. Individual chapters clarify the limits of families and subfamilies based on contemporary phylogenetic studies. These chapters provide for each family: diagnostic features and extensively illustrated details of their specialized morphology, summaries of their distribution and worldwide diversity, a history of their classification history and major workers, phylogenetic relationships, natural history, use in biological control and economic impact, fossil history, and fully illustrated identification keys to subfamilies or in some cases to genera. Additional chapters present best practices for collecting, rearing from hosts, and preservation, review digital resources currently available, explore the diversity of their natural history and their human impacts, such as their use and importance to biological and natural control of pest arthropods. Chapters by worldwide authorities explore the enormous biological diversity of chalcidoid wasps including consequences of their almost unbelievable miniaturization (the most extreme known in insects), relationships with endosymbionts, special aspects of genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology and development, and brief accounts of the most significant chalcidoid researchers that have passed. For many years to come this important book will serve the needs of hymenopterists and professional entomologists, taxonomists and systematists, entomologists working on parasitic wasps as biological control agents, and ecologists working on parasite-host interactions.

Bhutan is a small landlocked country in the Himalayas defined by a unique culture, high mountains, dense forests and fast flowing river carved valleys. An estimated 62% of the population live in rural areas and depend on subsistence agriculture and livestock farming for their livelihoods, although just 2.75% of the country's land is suitable for cultivation. Farmers therefore face a unique set of constraints, including limited arable land, steep terrain, variable rainfall, poor soil fertility, climate change and evolving supply chains. Written by a collection of Bhutanese experts and edited by a team with a wide range of academic and practical expertise in animal health and the agriculture sector in the country, this book provides the first comprehensive account of agricultural development, food production systems and food preferences in Bhutan. It documents the history of agricultural development in Bhutan focusing on the period from the mid-1990s to the present, with reference to past traditions and current government initiatives. Additionally, through regionally specific case studies from the North, South, West, East and Central Bhutan, the book explores how agriculture and food cultures have evolved over time, linking scientific analysis with local knowledge and personal reflections. By highlighting innovative and sustainable production practices that can be replicated in comparable agro-climatic zones worldwide, this book offers both practical insights for researchers and policymakers and a rich cultural narrative for travellers and food enthusiasts seeking to understand Bhutan through its food. It is an essential reference for academics in agriculture, animal health and food systems, while also serving as an engaging guide for readers interested in the relationship between landscape, culture and cuisine in the Himalayas.

This book is about bacteria and their place in natural history. It provides a readable and comprehensive account, suitable for anyone curious about the hidden corners of the natural world. It is also suitable for specialist microbiologists and students who wish to explore the wider reaches of bacteriology. The introduction explains what bacteria are and what they do and describes how to spot signs of their presence in nature. There are chapters on bacteria in earth history and their traces in the fossil record, on the roles of bacteria in chemical cycles in natural habitats, on bacteria in extreme environments, on the relationships between bacteria and animals, plants, fungi and other microbes and on diversity and classification. The book investigates references to bacteria in art and popular culture and describes their practical applications. A chapter on bacteria tourism is a personal account of the author's travels to see bacteria and also serves as a gazetteer of sites of interest. This is a very exciting time for those who study bacteria. Novel insights gained from advances in genomics and sequencing technologies make it feel as though these microscopic organisms are at long last being made properly 'visible' to us. Bacteria and their sister group, the archaea, constitute two of the three domains of life. No other book combines quite as many different strands of their story cohesively within a single volume.

Most food and fiber crops are produced from seed. This means that the world's population is dependent on annual seed production for its food supply. Vegetable seed production is much different and more challenging than production of grain crops. This book explains the biology and technology behind producing, maintaining, and enhancing the quality of vegetable seeds from breeding through to the marketed product. It begins with six chapters on a broad range of seed-related topics: the importance of seeds, reproductive biology of plants, genetic improvement strategies, quality assurance of seed production, post-harvest seed enhancement, and organic production. The remaining chapters cover seed production in eleven important vegetable families. Each chapter provides a description of the botany, types and cultivars, genetic improvement, pollination, soil fertility management, pest management, crop production, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and seed yields. The aim of this book is to educate how to produce high-quality vegetable seeds. Incorporating both current methodologies and recent research results, it is suitable for students, researchers, and professionals in the seed industry.

This book presents a readable account of butterfly behaviour, based on field observations, great photographs and the latest research. The main focus is on courtship and mating - including perching, searching and territorial behaviour - but to understand these subjects it is necessary to explain how mates are chosen and this requires sections on wing colours and patterns. A chapter on butterfly vision is also essential in terms of how butterflies see the world and each other. There have been exciting discoveries in all of these fields in recent years, including: butterfly vision (butterfly photoreceptors), wing patterns (molecular biology), wing colouration (structural colours and nano-architecture), mating strategies and female choice (ecology and behaviour).

This book explores mate-finding and courtship behaviour in the insect world, in all its subtlety and diversity. Insects engage in courtship as much, or as little, as any other animal; they have songs and dances, and all manner of instruments and ornaments to attract and court the opposite sex. Insects have evolved complex chemical and acoustic communication systems, sending fragrant messages, visual signals and subtle vibrations to attract and persuade. Insects also have many different ways and means of choosing or rejecting mating partners. This beautifully illustrated book shows the incredible variety of courtship behaviours and celebrates the wonderful natural history of a wide range of insects. Varieties of courtship can occur before, during and even after copulation, and numerous examples of the different mating strategies used are presented. As well as being fascinating and entertaining, studying courtship is also useful. For example, a knowledge of the courtship and mating behaviour of important pests helps researchers understand the dynamics of mate choice and sexual selection. Knowing which behaviours are directly related with mating success can be used to improve behaviour-based control strategies and improve sterile insect techniques. Knowledge of sex pheromones, and mating behaviour, can be combined to manage insect pests by mass or mating disruption. By studying model species - such as the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster - researchers have discovered how genes control and influence courtship behaviour, via proteins, biochemical pathways and neural circuits. This book integrates these diverse fields into a framework constructed around courtship and mate-finding, bringing together studies from the laboratory and the field. This landmark volume will be of interest to students of biology, entomologists, naturalists and anyone with a desire to know more about the love lives of the small creatures with which we share the planet.
