Impulsore Chresto reassesses opposition to Christianity AD 50-250. The Roman authorities‘ persecutions have caught the attention of both the public, intrigued by martyrs, and scholars, arguing that executions were relatively rare. This is not challenged, but the executions are placed in context as the most dramatic aspect of a spectrum of opposition including rumors, polemic, harassment and accusations. Such opposition was taken for granted and rarely described. When studying the preserved texts on trials against Christians, however, it appears that even here relatives, plaintiffs, spectators or local officials played crucial roles. There were as many reasons for opposition as opponents, but some motives reappear in clusters: Christians were perceived as superstitious and ungodly, as endangering peace with the gods and social order.

Evagrius Ponticus (345-399 n.Chr.) beschreibt in seiner Schrift de oratione das Gebet als eine innere Haltung. Ausführlich geht er auf die Voraussetzungen des Gebets ein und auch die Bedrohungen, die er als «Dämonen» bezeichnet. Durch die Untersuchungen der Autorin werden insbesondere zur Frage nach dem Verfasser von de oratione neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen: Nur eine Grundsubstanz kann Evagrius Ponticus zugeschrieben werden, nicht der gesamte Umfang der 153 Kapitel. Die gedankliche und sprachliche Abhängigkeit von Origenes, Clemens von Alexandrien und Gregor von Nyssa wird herausgearbeitet. Sie erklärt auch die philosophische Prägung der theologischen Schrift. Eine deutsche Übersetzung von de oratione ist beigefügt.

The Historia ecclesiastica of Eusebius took part in the cultural negotiations that attended the turn to a post-Constantinian Christianity. The immediate success of Historia ecclesiastica indicates its success in legitimizing the change process, and in conferring upon the Christian readers a past in keeping with their own situation. This book pinpoints the more or less fragmented concepts of history and world implied in Historia ecclesiastica and investigates what narrative(s) on the history of Christianity are contained in the work, and how Christianity and church are constructed as ideal entities. Differing from more conventional readings, where Historia ecclesiastica would be read as a more or less reliable document concerning the history of early Christianity, the book primarily reads the work as a text, pointing towards the cultural system which the text is itself a part of, but to which our access is only partial.

In Defence of Christianity examines the early Christian apologists in their context in thirteen articles divided in four parts. Part I provides an introduction to apology and apologetics in antiquity, an overview of the early Christian apologists, and an outline of their argumentation. The nine articles of Part II each cover one of the early apologists: Aristides, Justin, Tatian, Athenagoras, Theophilus, the author of the Letter to Diognetus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian and Minucius Felix. Part III contextualises the apologists by providing an English translation of contemporary pagan criticism of Christianity and by discussing this critique. Part IV consists of a single article discussing how Eusebius depicted and used the apologists in his Ecclesiastical History.

The political and social changes that occurred with the transformation of the Roman Empire into a Roman Christian Empire and with the bishops’ new social position as imperial bishops called for new literary representations of the ideal Christian leader. In this struggle, the figure of Moses turned up as a suitable figure intimately connected with questions of authority and power and, related to this, with the risk of dissension and discord. While the portrait of Moses as a political figure was hardly applicable in Christian discourses of the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it became the centre of interest during the 4th century. This new emphasis was, however, no more new than that it actually revived traditions of 1st-century Jewish biographical and autobiographical narratives.

This volume assembles written versions of lectures presented and discussed at the conference «Invention, Rewriting, Usurpation – Discursive Fights Over Religious Traditions In Antiquity» held at Aarhus and Ebeltoft in Denmark in the spring of 2010. The primary sources investigated are the four earliest known treatises on prayer in Christian history, written by Clement, Origen, Tertullian and Cyprian in the beginning of the third century.
