Based on work by W. B. Emery's still unpublished at his death in 1971, the volume presents a report of the excavations at the cemeteries of Qasr Ibrim in 1961, detailing the superstructure, grave type and burial contents of the graves in cemeteries 192, 192A, 192B, 192C, 192D and 193. This volume presents the results of a survey, carried out between 1986 and 1992 in the territory immediately adjacent to the fortress of Qasr Ibrim. It demonstrates the presence of a Meroitic population in the area of Ibrim from at least the early 1st century BC. The volume is illustrated with maps and plans, as well as photographs and line drawings of the many structures and artifacts located during the course of the survey. Penelope Wilson discusses the inscriptions and symbols incised in the roadway to Qasr Ibrim, together with other inscribed artefacts.

The Baboon and Mother of Apis Catacombs were cleared in the 1968/9 season and the 1969/70 and 1970/71 seasons respectively during the Egypt Exploration Society's excavation of the site now known as the Sacred Animal Necropolis at North Saqqara. These excavations were initiated by W. B. Emery and directed by him from 1964 until his death in Cairo in March 1971. Later in that year, the Society's Committee appointed H. S. Smith as Field Director and G. T. Martin as Site Director for the project. During the years 1971-6 fieldwork was completed by the Society as far as was deemed practicable. Work then started upon the formidable task of publishing the underground catacombs and surface structures discovered and the very large quantities of objects and documents found during the excavations. Two of the reports, on the Falcon Complex and Catacomb and the Main Temple Complex have since appeared. This volume by Sue Davies constitutes the final archaeological report on the cult installations accessed directly from the Main Temple Complex.

This book draws together the records from the excavations in the area of the Meroitic temple complex at Qasr Ibrim that took place mainly in the 1970s. This is the only major temple complex in Lower Nubia excavated in modern times. This volume provides an account of the excavations, as well as studies of the temple's painted decoration, the numerous graffiti on its walls and floors, and its fixtures and fittings, including several monumental Meroitic stelae. It highlights the role of the temple as a point of contact between Roman Egypt and the Meroitic Sudanese state.

In the 1980s the Egypt Exploration Society's expedition to Amarna discovered a well-preserved private chapel at the Workmen's Village and the largest that had been built there. Amidst the rubble were many hundreds of fragments of painted plaster fallen from the walls. Over many subsequent years they were recorded, fitted, together and, in the case of some key groups, restored into panels. Here the results are finally presented, as a detailed catalogue that illustrates all fragments of any likely significance, set within descriptions of the chapel building and its archaeological fill. They form a valuable point of reference for the beliefs of people during the Amarna Period. The remarkable lack of attention to Akhenaten's ideas helps to define the limits of penetration of the Aten cult and its imagery into the lives of people who lived separate from the royal court.

The volume discusses the travertine (Egyptian alabaster) quarries at Hatnub, in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Most of the archaeological remains date to the Old and Middle Kingdoms, but there was also a significant encampment during the New Kingdom. Using archaeological and textual evidence from Hatnub, the volume addresses some of the social and economic issues relating to the Ancient Egyptian procurement of materials from remote sites. It explores issues such as the provisioning and organization of Egyptian quarrying and mining expeditions, the nature of the key groups of workmen involved in quarrying, and the ritualisation of areas of remote, liminal human activity in the pharaonic period.

This book records the results of excavations and investigations undertaken by the Egypt Exploration Society between 1963 and 1998 on the largest surviving building, the Cathedral Church, on the significant site of Qasr Ibrim, one of the very few not totally destroyed by inundation following the construction of the Aswan Dam and the creation of Lake Nasser. It sets out the archaeological evidence, which has resulted from excavations and a detailed study of the surviving fabric, and provides an interpretation of that evidence for the construction of the Cathedral Church including its subsequent abandonment and use as a domestic dwelling and then an Ottoman Mosque. As an archaeological site it has produced an unprecedented wealth of material, including objects of wood, leather, and textile that are rarely preserved archaeologically. Also preserved are hundreds of specimens of written material in many different languages. This volume describes and illustrates in detail the architectural, artifactual, and textual finds from the earlier medieval period, from about AD 550 to 1200. An earlier volume in the same series (Qasr Ibrim, the Later Medieval Period) describes the remains from the succeeding period.

The dry height of the site of Qasr Ibrim above the Nile river has resulted in superb preservation of organic material. The textile collections from the excavations have already become one of the largest from any site in the middle Nile valley. They are unique as an unmatched sequence, dating from the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty to the Late Ottoman Period (750 - 656 BC) and ranging from the domestic remains of town life and tiny exotic imports of the site's great years to the cast off garments and furnishings, pitifully mended and re-mended, from ages of disaster and decline. The important textiles from the Cathedral Cemetery at Qasr Ibrim, including those from the burial of Bishop Timotheus, are published here with detailed descriptions and a photographic record of the most significant pieces.

Sais was Egypt's capital in the 26th Dynasty, but it also had an earlier history, unknown before the EES/ Durham University/ SCA work at the site. This volume is the final excavation report for work carried out in the Northern Enclosure area of the site at Kom Rebwa, funded by the British Academy through the Egypt Exploration Society and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Excavations between 2000 and 2004 uncovered levels dating between the 20th Dynasty and the Third Intermediate Period. The best preserved levels consisted of part of a house, whose roof had collapsed and an earlier kiln, used for firing faience beads as well as pottery. Lower, buried layers also included Old Kingdom material, hinting at the earlier history of the area. The report contains invaluable information about everyday rural life in the Delta, with anlayses of the different layers, the pottery and the small finds, as well as plant remains and animal bones.

The fieldwork revealed a community of labourers likely engaged in tomb-cutting and related tasks, including at the Royal Tombs, but of lesser social standing than the occupants of the Workmen's Village. The piecing together of diverse strands of archaeological evidence sheds light on their experiences, the Stone Village serving jointly as a new source for the study of Amarna's vernacular urban architecture. The kiln is of the early Roman Period and appears to be of the same type as those excavated by Flinders Petrie in the early twentieth century. The book attempts to place Petrie's finds in their archaeological context and to reinterpret his evidence in the light of findings from the new excavation. In so doing, a new outline of the chaine operatoire of faience production during the Roman Period is proposed and its relationship to the making of pre-Roman faience is discussed. The book includes an illustrated catalogue of finds.

This is the second volume on the monastic site of Kom el-Nana at Tell el-Amarna and brings up-to-date the excavations carried out there. The first volume contained mainly unstratified pottery and no glass, and included some of the Late Roman sites around Amarna. This volume brings together the stratified pottery and both stratified and unstratifued glass, and includes more Late Roman site around Amarna which were visited by Robert Miller in 1988 and Barry Kemp in 1995. Due to the incomplete nature of the excavations at present (only around a third of the monastery has so far been excavated) and the time elapsed since abandonment, the conclusions reached on the dating of the site may well have to be revised in future. In the meantime, the collections of pottery and glass will, hopefully, prove useful for those working in the Middle East and especially in Egypt.

This volume is the first of a series on the ceramics from the Egypt Exploration Society's excavations in the Anubieion at Saqqara. The desert edge overlooking the Nile Valley was intensively used for two and a half millennia before its selection as the site of the mainly Ptolemaic temple. Mastaba tombs, pyramids and their associated temples, densely packed shaft tombs and a Late Dynastic cemetery came and went, many leaving evidence of former magnificence, while invisible beneath shifting sands lies fragmentary testimony to the kings, queens, nobles and commoners buried here and the priestly communities who ministered to their needs in the afterlife. Two volumes have described the surviving structures and the large and small objects found and analysed in the area's complex stratigraphy; the present volume adds the evidence of that most prolific of ancient artefacts, the pottery, for the whole period from the first use of the area until the eighth century BC. Published and some unpublished parallels from Saqqara itself, from the city of Memphis, where most of those buried here lived and died, and from further afield, place each type in its geographical and chronological context to trace the evolution of the ceramic repertoire in the Saqqara/ Memphis area through the major periods of ancient Egyptian history.

Sais II: The Prehistoric Period is the final publication of the EES/Durham/SCA excavations carried out in 2007 in the 'Great Pit' at Sa el-Hagar, ancient Sais. It contains a full discussion of the layers dating to the Neolithic and Buto-Maadi Periods, with specialist reports on the chipped and ground stone tools, small finds, pottery, animal bones and flora. As the only Neolithic site so far excavated on the Nile floodplain in Egypt, the site has important implications for understanding the Neolithisation of the Delta and the development of Predynastic settlements in the north of Egypt.

This volume is a study of ceramic changes in the stratified settlement at Kom Rabia, Memphis, during the Late Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period. The pottery is presented by sectors, following the archaeological narrative of Giddy's report (The Survey of Memphis VI), and quantitative analysis of a random sample taken from 73% of all contexts is used to plot ceramic changes through time. The fine points of this development are discussed in the commentary for each corpus, while Appendices 1 and 2 show the distribution of types within the sequence and of pottery within single contexts. Within the Egyptian pottery assemblage there were classes that required discussion of all occurrences and these are presented in two separate chapters: vessels with marks incised before and after firing (Chapter 12, Carla Gallorini) and large handmade oval plates with incised decoration ('fish dishes') (Chapter 13, Bettina Bader). Three further chapters discuss the non-Egyptian pottery: Nubian Pottery (Chapter 14, Janine Bourriau and Serena Giuliani); Aegean and Cypriote Fine Wares (Chapter 15, Kathryn Eriksson) and Middle Bronze Age Canaanite Jars (Chapter 16, Mary Ownby).

This volume continues the ceramic history of the Saqqara Anubis temple, excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society from 1977 to 1979. Volume III showed how the site was used for burials of royalty and high officials from the Archaic Period until the end of the New Kingdom. The present volume covers the succeeding Late Dynastic Period: from at least the mid-sixth century onwards, burials appear to have been made in the earlier shaft tombs as well as in a new cemetery in the sand. A temple to Anubis, god of the dead, was commenced at the same time, abandoned during the Persian Period but restarted around 400 BC. The ceramics include bowls used by the embalmers as well as offering vessels and the repertoire of the fourth century builders. Unpublished contemporary ceramics from the nearby Sacred Animal Necropolis elucidate and supplement the Anubieion record.

This volume publishes the scenes and texts of the Ramesside Temple at Amara West in Sudan. It was excavated by an EES expedition during the 1938-39 season, followed by the excavation of the West Gate between 1947 and 1949. The main decoration dates to the reign of Ramesses II, although most of his Twentieth Dynasty successors are also attested in added texts and scenes. Of particular interest are those that feature Ramesside viceroys of Kush, some of whom are known only from their depictions in this temple.

The ninth volume in the 'Survey of Memphis' series presents over twelve hundred objects found during the EES excavations at the site of Kom Rabia from 1986 to 1990, when late Middle Kingdom installations were excavated. The objects were recovered from a series of occupation levels in the installations and date from the late Middle Kingdom period and its immediate aftermath at Memphis. The volume complements the site report describing the excavations (SoM VI); it is also the sister volume to that presenting the New Kingdom and Post-New Kingdom objects from Kom Rabia (SoM II). This volume presents the blue-painted pottery from the EES excavations at Kom Rabia, one of the few specific site collections that spans the entire period of manufacture of this distinctive type of ceramics. All of the fragments studied by the author are presented within their find contexts arranged according to the main chronological phases into which activity at the site can be divided. Despite the fragmentary nature of the material, which does not permit a detailed discussion of its morphological evolution, it does enable a comparison of the decorative motifs with material from other major sites such as Amarna, Karnak, Malkata and Qantir. From this, it is possible to assess whether there was a Memphite production centre and how the Kom Rabia assemblage compares qualitatively and quantitatively to the others. The volume presents the first comprehensive multi-site listing of the decorative motifs.

This volume, part of the wider EES publications on the site of Gebel el-Silsila, covers the results of the 1983 season at nearby Wadi Shatt el-Rigal, famous for its abundance of epigraphic records from the late Eleventh Dynasty. The reason for their presence in this remote site has remained an intriguing problem that has been much debated. Besides the three well-known royal reliefs of Mentuhotep II and Mentuhotep III, the mission under Ricardo Caminos and assisted by Jurgen Osing documented more than 800 inscriptions and rock-drawings, which until now have remained only partially published. Follow-up work in 2004 has allowed for checks on the previous work, which can now be made fully accessible.

This volume presents the pottery from the tomb of Maya and Meryt (located in the New Kingdom necropolis at Saqqara) in its archaeological context. Volume I was devoted to the reliefs, and volume II to the objects and skeletal remains from the tomb. The closely dated burial assemblage of Maya (Year 9 of Horemheb) and associated offering pottery form the basis for tracing the development of pottery forms in the late Eighteenth Dynasty and continuing into the Ramesside Period. The wealth of blue-painted pottery (amounting to 187 vessels) is carefully described, the motifs represented in the designs are discussed, and aspects of the chronological development of blue-painted pottery are illustrated. 96 colour photographs are included showing many of these beautiful blue-painted vessels. Numerous inscriptions on the pottery provide interesting information on the actual contents of the vessels provided for Maya's burial.
