Histories of Internationalism – serie

Representing a crucial intervention in the history of internationalism, transnationalism and global history, this edited collection examines a variety of international movements, organisations and projects developed in Europe or by Europeans over the course of the 20th century. Reacting against the old Eurocentricism, much of the scholarship in the field has refocussed attention on other parts of the globe. This volume attempts to rethink the role played by ideas, people and organisations originating or located in Europe, including some of their consequential global impact. The chapters cover aspects of internationalism such as the importance of language, communication and infrastructures of internationalism; ways of grappling with the history of internationalism as a lived experience; and the roles of European actors in the formulation of different and often competing models of internationalism. It demonstrates that the success and failure of international programmes were dependent on participants' ability to communicate across linguistic but also political, cultural and economic borders. By bringing together commonly disconnected strands of European history and 'history from below', this volume rebalances and significantly advances the field, and promotes a deeper understanding of internationalism in its many historical guises. The volume is conceived as a way of thinking about internationalism that is relevant not just to scholars of Europe, but to international and global history more generally.

Formed in 1947, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was the first postwar international organization dedicated to economic cooperation in Europe. Linking the universalism of the UN to European regionalism, both Cold War superpowers, the USA and the Soviet Union, were founding members of the UNECE. Building on the League of Nations’ difficult heritage, and in an increasingly challenging political environment, the UNECE’s mission was to facilitate European cooperation transcending the boundaries set by the Cold War . With a number of competitor organizations set against it, the UNECE managed to carve out a niche for itself, setting norms and standards that still have an impact on the everyday lives of millions in Europe and beyond today. Working against an overwhelming geopolitical trend, UNECE succeeded in bridging the Cold War divide on several occasions, and maintained a broad system of contacts across the Iron Curtain.This book provides a unique study of this important but hitherto under-researched international organization. Incorporating research on the Cold War, the history of internationalism and European integration, Stinsky weaves these different threads of historical enquiry into a single analytical narrative.

One of the world’s first truly international humanitarian organisations, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) was championed as a beacon of postwar philanthropy that sought to rehabilitate as well as provide relief. This edited volume offers the first comprehensive study of the UNRRA and seeks to identify the key successes, limitations and enduring challenges it faced in the postwar period. Tracing the rehabilitation of displaced children in the camps of Germany and Austria, to mountainous Greek villages without access to food or medical supplies and refugees in postwar China, it will assess the immediate impact of UNRRA rehabilitation policy on postwar reconstruction, international development and broader humanitarian processes. Through these international case studies it will explore the ways in which a fundamental inability to define ‘rehabilitation’ made it seemingly impossible to meet its objectives. As a predecessor to modern specialised agencies such as UNESCO, WHO and UNICEF, studying the UNRRA is crucial for our understanding of the history of the United Nations, the circumstances that shaped its future policies and the foundations of modern humanitarianism.

The end of the Second World War and the eclipse of empires brought a wave of efforts to reimagine the future world order. When nation states emerging from colonial rule met at Bandung to chart alternative destinies and challenge global inequalities, they hoped to create a less hierarchical, more pluralistic and more distributive world. This volume considers the alternative visions put forth by the third world at the close of WWII to recover their world-changing aspirations as well as its cultural and intellectual breakthroughs.Demonstrating how the invention of the third world sought to create new institutions of solidarity, new expressions and alternative narratives to the imperial ones that they had inherited, this book reveals how writers, artists, musicians and photographers created networks to circulate and exchange these ideas. Exploring these ideas put forth from various regions of the global south, the chapters trace their search for new meanings of freedom, self-determination and the promise of development. Out of this moment came efforts in the south to create new histories of global relations, icons and genres, and placed the promises of decolonization and struggles for social and racial justice at the centre of global history.Showing how efforts to remake the world intersected with and altered the trajectories of the global Cold War, Inventing the Third World discusses how this conflict existed outside of the traditional east-west framework and offers an insight into a radically different ‘global cultural cold war’. This book explores how American internationalism and Eastern European social science influenced and reshaped each other in the 1930s, giving rise to the phenomenon of transnational social science. By tracing interactions between Polish and Jewish scholars and American internationalists, it reveals how politically relevant knowledge—on nations, nationalism, and migration—evolved into the area studies on Eastern Europe that emerged at American universities during the early Cold War.Following Woodrow Wilson’s interest in Eastern Europe, a group of American internationalists—primarily linked to Columbia University, think tanks, and philanthropists—worked to establish a network of experts in the region. In their effort to support peace and democracy, they sought to advance social-scientific knowledge of Eastern Europe’s contested borderlands. Poland and the Making of Transnational Social Science explores how interactions between scholars—Polish and Jewish intellectuals and their American counterparts—shaped interwar transnational thought on self-determination, nationalism and national indifference, anti-Semitism and racial exclusion, migration, and assimilation. This knowledge circulation played a key role in the evolution of 1930s social science and its transition into American Cold War area studies.

Building on recent advances in our understanding of the history of internationalism in the socialist world, this open access book explores how far the practices of international solidarity were underpinned by voluntarism in multiple contexts. As a fundamental component of everyday life in socialist societies, from the Bolshevik revolution onward, the concept drove a myriad range of activities from shock work and Stakhanovism to local fundraising for civic projects. Through a mixture of compulsion, enticement, social pressure and full-on enforcement alongside popular enthusiasm, it was socialist citizens that drove internationalism; paying for it by donating money, joining solidarity committees or attending meetings.Drawing upon a range of examples and with an expansive geographical focus, this edited volume will return voluntarism to the fore of studies of socialist internationalism, opening up new pathways in the study of the topic and shedding light on the everyday realities of such practices.
