International Association of Geodesy Symposia – serie

Current studies of recent crustal movement are presented using space and terrestrial geodetic methods. Results of the studies, as well as methodological questions related to monitoring, are discussed. Papers are grouped within the following section headings: - Global Plate Motions Instrumentation and Modeling; - Regional Dynamics Modeling of Deformation; - Deformation Studies by GPS Horizontal Crustal Movements; - Vertical Crustal Movements; - Gravimetry and Crustal Deformation This volume is a comprehensive reference for research scientists and students.

Space geodesy has evolved in the last twenty years into one of the most exciting disciplines in the earth sciences. This development is due to a large extent to the versatility of applications provided by the radio interferometric technique called Global Positioning System or GPS. Appropriately, Symposium 102: Global Positioning System: An Overview was held at the 125th Anniversary Meeting of the International Association of Geodesy in August, 1989. A broad review of GPS geodesy, achievements to date and the prospects for future study and application was presented. Papers included in this volume are grouped as follows: - Static and Geodynamic Positioning; - Orbit Determination Optimization and Design Dynamic; - Kinematic GPS/INS Radio Tracking Systems A useful reference for any researcher or student of space geodesy.

A General Meeting of the lAG was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, to commemorate its 125th Anniversary. The Edinburgh meeting, which attracted 360 scientific delegates and 80 accompanying persons from 44 countries, was hosted jointly by the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh. The scientific part of the program, which was held in the Appleton Tower of the University, included the following five symposia: Symposium 101 Global and Regional Geodynamics Symposium 102 GPS and Other Radio Tracking Systems Symposium 103 Gravity, Gradiometry and Gravimetry Symposium 104 Sea Surface Topography, the Geoid and Vertical Datums Symposium 105 Earth Rotation and Coordinate Reference Frames All together there were 90 oral and 160 poster presentatio'ls. The program was arranged to prevent any overlapping of oral presentations, and thus enabled delegates to participate in all the sessions. The 125th Anniversary Ceremony took place on August 7, 1989, in the noble surroundings of the McEwan Hall where, 53 years earlier, Vening-Meinesz gave one of the two Union Lectures at the 6th General Assembly of the IUGG. The Ceremony commenced with welcome speeches by the British hosts. An interlude of traditional Scottish singing and dancing was followed by the Presidential Address given by Professor Ivan Mueller, on 125 years of international cooperation in geodesy. The Ceremony continued with greetings from representatives of sister societies, and was concluded by the presentation of the Levallois Medal to Professor Arne Bjerhammar.

Recent advances and techniques in precise geoid determination are presented with a discussion of their implication for geophysical and oceanographic research, as well as identification and formulation of a goal on which future geoid research should focus. Over the past ten years, since the MERIT project began in 1980, great changes have taken place and significant advances made in the area of Earth Rotation and Coordinate Reference Frames. Symposium 105, held at the 125th Anniversary Meeting of the International Association of Geodesy, August 1989, was devoted to this subject. Major improvements in techniques, such as VLBI and laser ranging, have been accompanied by corresponding improvements in data-processing procedures and theories of relevant phenomena. The papers included in this volume provide both a comprehensive record of past discoveries and a sound basis for further advances. Kinematic Systems in Geodesy, Surveying, and Remote Sensing provides a state-of-the-art discussion on the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in combination with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for detailed sensing of the Earth's surface. Divided into two parts, the book first discusses GPS/INS with respect to theory and modelling, equipment trends, estimation methods and quality control, algorithms, and software trends. It then describes the applications of these kinematic systems to positioning and navigation, modelling and measurement of gravity, gravity gradiometry, and altitude. This collection of 63 presentations documents the symposium of the same name held in Banff, Alberta, September 1990. It is the sixth volume of the International Association of Geodesy Symposia series published by Springer-Verlag New York.

Rapid growth of geodetic information provided by the Global Positioning System (GPS) and stringent requirements for a precise geoid in ocean areas for ocean circulation models have spurred interest in geoid studies. As a result, the International Geoid Commission was formed to provide a focus for this important geoid research. Determination of the Geoid: Present and Future is the result of the first meeting of the Commission, held at the Instituto di Topografia, Fotogrammetria e Geofisica at the Politecnico di Milano, June 1990. Six major topics are presented: Global Geopotential Models: Present and Future; Role of Topography in Geoid Computations; the Geoid and the Global Positioning System; the State of Computation of National or Regional Geoids; Software and Data Improvements for Geoid Computations; and Recent Developments in the GEOMED (Determination of the Geoid in the Mediterranean) Project.

Precise and continuous tracking with multi-satellite systemsof aircraft andlow flying satellites, accurate airbornemeasurement of gravity and gravity gradients, and satellitegradiometry have fundamentally changed our view on the de-termination of the Earth's gravity field. The papers in thisvolume describe these techniques in detail. The ideas arepresentedas complementary, and are used to develop newtheoretical concepts of gravity field analysis. Computatio-nal models using these techniques are also discussed and aretested in simulations.The papers presented in this volume are the result of an IAGsymposium held during the XX General Assembly of the Inter-national Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Vienna, Austria,August 11-24, 1991.

This book contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the VIII Hotine-Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy in Rome, 17-21 June, 2013. The scientific sessions focused on global reference systems, geodetic data analysis, geopotential modelling, gravity field mapping as well as digital terrain modelling.

This proceedings contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the IAG Scientific Assembly, Postdam, Germany, 1-6 September, 2013. It presents a collection of the contributions on the applications of earth rotations dynamics, on observation systems and services as well as on imaging and positioning techniques and its applications.

These proceedings contain 23 papers, which are the peer-reviewed versions of presentations made at the Joint Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI). The assembly was held from 30 July to 4 August 2017 in Kobe, Japan. The scientific assembly included seven symposia organized by IAG, and nine joint symposia, along with additional symposia organized by IASPEI. The IAG symposia were structured according to the four IAG Commissions and the three GGOS Focus Areas, and included reference frames, static and time-variable gravity field, Earth rotation and geodynamics, multi-signal positioning, geodetic remote sensing, and GGOS. The joint symposia included monitoring of the cryosphere, studies of earthquakes, earthquake source processes, and other types of fault slip, geohazard warning systems, deformation of the lithosphere, and seafloor geodesy. Together, the IAG and joint symposia spanned a broad range of work in geodesy and its applications.

These proceedings include selected papers from the International Review Workshop on Satellite Altimetry Cal/Val Activities and Applications, held in Chania, Crete, Greece, on 23-26 April 2018. Organised in the context of the European Space Agency Project “Fiducial Reference Measurements for Altimetry” the workshop was cosponsored by the International Association of Geodesy (in particular by the IAG Commission 2, Gravity Field), the European Space Agency, the European Union (the Copernicus Programme), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Space Geomatica P.C., and the Municipality of Chania.The workshop presented the latest research in the field of satellite altimetry calibration and altimetry applications for monitoring ocean changes and improving Earth observation in an objective, continuous, homogeneous and reliable manner, free of errors and biases. Further, it supported long-term monitoring of climate change by providing abetter understanding of environmental changes in the world's oceans, terrestrial surface waters, and Arctic and Antarctic Regions. The outcome was the creation of a scientific roadmap with procedures, protocols, guidelines, and best practices to help international groups working on satellite altimetry to establish SI (Système International d'Unités) traceability of their measurements, results and data products.

This volume gathers the proceedings of the IX Hotine-Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy, which was held from 18 to 22 June 2018 at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Since 2006, the Hotine-Marussi Symposia series has been produced under the auspices of the Inter-Commission Committee on Theory (ICCT) within the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). The ICCT has organized the last four Hotine-Marussi Symposia, held in Wuhan (2006) and Rome (2009, 2013 and 2018). The overall goal of the ICCT and Hotine-Marussi Symposia has always been to advance geodetic theory, as reflected in the 25 peer-reviewed research articles presented here.The IX Hotine-Marussi Symposium was divided into 10 topical sessions covering all aspects of geodetic theory including reference frames, gravity field modelling, adjustment theory, atmosphere, time series analysis and advanced numerical methods. In total 118 participants attended the Symposium and delivered 82 oral and 37 poster presentations. During a special session at the Accademia Nazionale deiLincei, the oldest scientific academy in the world, six invited speakers discussed interactions of geodesy with oceanography, glaciology, atmospheric research, mathematics, Earth science and seismology.

The symposium was hosted by the State Research Center of the Russian Federation Concern CSRI Elektropribor, JSC and was attended by 75 participants from 15 different countries. 32 oral and 20 poster contributions were presented in four different topical sessions: Terrestrial, shipboard and airborne gravimetry, Absolute gravimetry, Relative gravimetry, gravity networks and applications of gravimetry and Cold atom and superconducting gravimeters, gravitational experiments.

This open access volume contains the proceedings of the X Hotine-Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy which was held from 13 to 17 June 2022 at the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. Since 2006 the series of the Hotine-Marussi Symposia has been under the responsibility of the Inter-Commission Committee on Theory (ICCT) within the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). The ICCT organized the last five Hotine-Marussi Symposia held in Wuhan (2006), Rome (2009, 2013 and 2018), and Milan (2022). The overall goal of the ICCT and Hotine-Marussi Symposia has always been to advance geodetic theory which is indeed documented by the 22 research articles published in these proceedings.  The jubilee X Hotine-Marussi Symposium was organized in 10 topical sessions covering all parts of geodetic theory including reference frames, gravity field modelling, adjustment theory, height systems, time series analysis, or advanced numerical methods. In total, 60 participants attended the Symposium who delivered 62 oral and 18 poster presentations. During a special session, five invited speakers discussed two basic concepts of physical geodesy – geoid and quasigeoid.

This open access volume contains a selection of papers presented at three different IAG Symposia held in 2022: GGHS2022 – Gravity, Geoid, and Height Systems 2022, Austin, TX, United States of America, September 12 – 14, 2022; IAG Commission 4 – Positioning and Applications, Potsdam, Germany, September 5 – 8, 2022; and REFAG2022 – Reference Frames for Applications in Geosciences, Thessaloniki, Greece, October 17 – 20, 2022. Two of these three conferences were planned for 2020 or 2021, but had to be postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic. They therefore became an important opportunity for the global geodesy community to rebuild professional networks and to resume face-to-face interaction. Scientists from around the world were delighted to once again gather together to present their research progress and findings, and discuss scientific issues.

This open access volume contains 46 selected papers from the symposia organised or co-organised by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) in the framework of the 28th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG).

This open access volume contains 23 peer-reviewed papers from the GGHS2024 “Gravity, Geoid and Height Systems 2024” Symposium co-organized by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Commission2, the International Gravity Field Service (IGFS) and the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). The conference was held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 4 to 6 September 2024, continuing the long history of IAG gravity field related symposia, which started with GGG2000. 125 abstracts were received, out of which 58 have been scheduled as oral presentations and 67 as posters. 130 participants from 26 countries participated in the conference, out of which 48 (~38%) were Early Career Scientists (ECS).

These proceedings contain 25 papers, which are the peer-reviewed versions of presentations made at the 1st International Workshop on the Quality of Geodetic Observation and Monitoring (QuGOMS’11), held 13 April to 15 April 2011 in Garching, Germany. The papers were drawn from five sessions which reflected the following topic areas: (1) Uncertainty Modeling of Geodetic Data, (2) Theoretical Studies on Combination Strategies and Parameter Estimation, (3) Recursive State-Space Filtering, (4) Sensor Networks and Multi Sensor Systems in Engineering Geodesy, (5) Multi-Mission Approaches With View to Physical Processes in the Earth System.

This volume includes a selection of papers presented at the IAG international symposium "Gravity, Geoid and Height Systems 2012" (GGHS2012), which was organized by IAG Commission 2 “Gravity Field” with the assistance of the International Gravity Field Service (IGFS) and GGOS Theme 1 “Unified Global Height System”.
