This volume contains a collection of articles that present studies of medieval Karaite texts. In recent years many new medieval manuscript sources of Karaite texts have become available that show the central role that the Karaites played in the development of medieval Jewish thought. The articles in the volume concern primary manuscript sources, the majority of which have not been published so far. They examine various topics in Biblical exegesis and grammar. Exegesis and grammatical thought were intimately connected in medieval Karaite scholarship. This voliume reflects this close relationship between the two disciplines. The study breaks previously neglected ground with articles on the book production of the early Bulaq press in Egypt (1822-51) (Cheng-Hsiang Hsu); advertising agencies in Egypt, 1890-1939 (Relli Shechter); Arabic books printed in Malta 1826-42 Palestine (Ami Ayalon and Rene Wildangel); Christian missionaries and colloquial Arabic printing (Heather Sharkey); the early history of publishing on the East African island of Zanzibar (Philip Sadgrove); the participation of Iraqi Jews in European and Indian journalistic enterprises (Orit Bashkin); a young Ottoman exile newspaper in London, Hurrihet, (1868-1928) and its owner Osman Zeki Bey (Nedret Kuran-Burcoglu); Persian books published in Turkistan (Olympia Scheglova); and TULLIP, a projected thesaurus of Persian lithographic works (Ulrich Marzolph). This goes some way to fill some of the lacunae in our knowledge of the development of printing and publishing in the area. Much more emphasis needs to be given to the print media and its role in social, political and cultural developments; a second symposium is to be held at the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris in November 2005.

This study is the companion volume to the new Arabic Edition of 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti's imposing magnum opus 'Aja'ib al-Athar fi 'l-Tarajim wa-'l-Akhbar (The Marvellous Compositions of Biographies and Events) that was edited by Moreh. Al-Jabarti's work presents the main chronicles and biographies dealing with the history of Egypt between 1688 and 1821. Moreh has responded to the long felt need for a critical scientific edition of this work, based upon its manuscripts scattered all over the world. Moreh has, for the first time, made a rigorous comparison of the entire text as found in the most important manuscripts and in the printed editions. The Arabic text produced is the first three volumes of 'Aja'ib to be based on al-Jabarti's autograph kept at the Cambridge University Library and the fourth volume at the Berlin Staatbibliothek copied accurately from the lost autograph of the fourth volume. This English introductory volume is a product and analysis of the research undertaken for the new Arabic edition. 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti (1753-1825) was a talented and original historian, best known for his three accounts of the history of Egypt. His account of the French occupation of Egypt (1798-1801) is of particular interest. Al-Jabarti's 'Aja'ib may be regarded as the swan song of medieval Arab-Muslim history and culture and reflects the decline of medieval Islamic civilization and military witnessed and recorded by a historian possessing unusual insight.

Shifman's monograph on the Palmyrene tax inscription of 137 CE, published in Russian in 1980, has been largely neglected in subsequent scholarship, sharing the fate of other fine contributions published in Russian. A wide-ranging scholar in Classics and Semitics, Shifman had direct access to the inscription, which is located in St Petersburg. He provides a detailed account of the recovery of the inscription, editing and translating the Greek and Aramaic text, and adding a detailed philological commentary. His primary purpose was to show the significance of the inscription for the study of the economy and society of the Roman Empire and especially the Syrian Province.

This volume brings together the eight papers presented by a panel on Arabic linguistics organized on the occasion of the 14th Italian Meeting of Afroasiatic Linguistics held in Turin in 2011. They address multiple aspects of classical and colloquial Arabic: phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology and lexicography, but also semantics and pragmatics, as well as logic and argumentation. The title chosen by the editor, Manuela E.B. Giolfo, recalls that Arabic was the object of a rich indigenous tradition of linguistic analysis long before becoming, from the nineteenth century onwards, an object of modern Western linguistics. Targum Jonathan is one of our most important sources for understanding how Jews read, interpreted, and used the Hebrew Bible in Late Antiquity and in subsequent generations: it is cited widely in rabbinic literature and by medieval commentators (Rashi, Kimhi, etc.) and continued to play a role in synagogue liturgy and study. Through a detailed study of the extant medieval manuscripts of Targum Samuel that were produced in and around Italy, France, Germany, and England, this book explains how and why the text of Targum Jonathan changed over time. It explores the relationship of these manuscripts to the ancient translations of the Hebrew Bible (e.g. Septuagint, Vulgate, Peshitta) and to Hebrew manuscripts containing variant readings of the biblical text; it examines their unique exegetical variants, including the complex system of marginal notes in the famous Codex Reuchlinianus No. 3, and analyses the longer versions of the Targum found in liturgies and those designated Tosefta Targums, which incorporate a wealth of additional haggadic material. This volume will be of interest to anyone engaged in text criticism of the Hebrew Bible, the study of Jewish exegesis, liturgy, and manuscript production, or the development and use of Aramaic.

13 poetic fragments in the Modern South Arabian language Soqotri (the island of Soqotra, Gulf of Aden, Yemen), recorded phonographically at the beginning of the 20th century by the Austrian orientalist David Heinrich Mueller, are presented in phonological transcription and English translation. Each fragment is extensively annotated with the help of native speakers of modern Soqotri. This volume is part of a wider project aiming at mapping the technical medical terminology as it features in medieval Hebrew medical works, especially those terms that do not feature in the current dictionaries at all, or insufficiently. In this way the author hopes to facilitate the consultation of these and other medical works and the identification of anonymous medical material. The volume covers Hebrew translations of Hippocrates' Medical Aphorisms, one of the most popular medical works in the ancient and medieval world. These translations range from a translation from Latin from the late twelfth century (by Do'eg ha-Edomi), to translations from the Arabic and/or Latin from the thirteenth-fifteenth centuries (by Moses Ibn Tibbon, Hillel of Verona, Nathan ha-Me?ati, Zera?yah ?en, Judah Shalom, and an anonymous author) and to a translation from the Greek (by Joseph Delmedigo) from the seventeenth century. The volume is a continuation to two earlier volumes published by OUP in 2011 (JSS Supplement 27) and 2013 (JSS Supplement 30), in which the author foremost sketched novel terminology coined by major Hebrew translators of the thirteenth century.

The quadriliteral verbs in Arabic established a system, which compared to the triliteral verbs, add a new dimension and flexibility to the speakers of Arabic and facilitate meeting the daily demands of modern era for new modes of expression. The basic function of the expansions into quadrilateral verbs is to indicate intensity or repetition of the ideas denoted by the bi-radical or by the triradical verbs. This study attempts to explore the procedures of the formation of quadrilateral verbs in Iraqi spoken Arabic, taking into consideration that most Semitic verb roots are triradicals and Arabic is no exception. The author gathered the basic materials from Iraqi spoken Arabic dictionaries, Iraqi folk and children songs, Iraqi proverbs, folktales and poetry, and studies on quadriliteral verbs. He also noted examples of quadriliteral verbs spoken in Kuwait, Syria and Lebanon, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and discussed his findings with natives from different parts of Iraq. He substantiated the meaning of some of these verbs by referring to classical Arabic, Aramaic, Syriac, Hebrew, and borrowed lexical items from Persian, Turkish and Romance languages. There is no guarantee, however, that all these quadriliteral verbs are still in use, but the attempt here is to illustrates a principle, or a tendency in innovation with such verbs. The work contains three appendixes. Each one represents a different procedure in creating these quadrilateral verbs and their meanings.

The Syriac medical tradition constitutes an important bridge traversing the imposing historical gap between the late Hellenic and early Islamic periods in southwest Asia. This volume traces this history from Justinian-era monastic communities through Sassanid medical academies to the caliphal court at Baghdad by comparing the major Syriac and Arabic translations of the Hippocratic Aphorisms, a venerable Greek introduction to the art of medicine, with a particular focus on the work of the famous translator and physician Hunayn ibn Ishaq (d. 873). Utilizing previously unavailable texts and drawing heavily upon the classical Syriac-Arabic glossographical tradition of Hunayn's school, the book demonstrates the importance of Syriac precedents in translation methods and medical terminology for ?unayn's Arabic translation praxis. In doing so, it clarifies the historical development of Arabic medical philosophy and makes definite advances in the study of Greek-Syriac/Arabic translation, variously confirming, modifying and overturning traditional and contemporary historical accounts concerning the authorship and periodization of the works concerned and their relationships one to another.

The linguistic character of the 'biblical' Dead Sea Scrolls has been of interest to scholars since the very beginning of scrolls research. However, scholars have disagreed over the nature of the language found in those scrolls. Some argue that the 'biblical' scrolls are essential to our understanding of Second Temple Hebrew, while others set these scrolls aside in favour of the non-biblical texts. Yet, no one has undertaken a comprehensive linguistic analysis of the 'biblical' scrolls, which is essential if we hope to settle this debate. This volume fills some of that void by providing a broad linguistic analysis of all the 'biblical' Dead Sea Scrolls. Over forty different features are discussed through a comparison between the 'biblical' scrolls and the other major witnesses to the Hebrew Bible. It begins with a global analysis of all the 'biblical' scrolls, focusing on a comparison between the plene and defective manuscripts. Through that analysis, this study concludes that there are very few linguistic modernizations found in the 'biblical' scrolls. In order to verify this conclusion, five individual scrolls are analysed. Finally, it closes by providing a qualitative analysis of the 'biblical' scrolls and shows their linguistic character to be most consistent with a scribal culture of linguistic stability and textual authority.

The second deals with modality within the approach of possible-world-semantics, showing that Biblical Hebrew verb forms encode modality as well. This volume is the result of collaborative work conducted with a number of native speakers of the languages over several years. The volume presents a comparative cultural glossary of 345 head terms, which are given in the six Modern South Arabian languages: Group I: Mehri, Harsusi and Bathari; Group II: Sheret, Sokotri and Hobyot. The groupings are linguistically rather than geographically based. The list adapts and expands Claire Bowern's basic word list of 224 terms (Bowern 2008). Our word list was developed by the Documentation and Ethnolinguistic Analysis of Modern South Arabian (DEAMSA) team in collaboration with native speakers over a period of five years. Significant dialectal variants are noted for Mehri, Sheret, Hobyot and Sokotri, but these are by no means exhaustive. In many cases, the head words are 'umbrella terms' for clusters of forms, each of which has its own more precise semantic colouring. To demonstrate this clustering of forms, for each language the volume provides a selection of the many different forms offered by speakers for some head words.

Al- Tayyib Salih is not merely another writer in the Arab world or in exile. The fact that he is a Sudanese author who has spent more years of his life in the West than in the Arab world, and who writes in Arabic, transforms his literary work into a special phenomenon. Although very few of his writings have been published, these have been sufficient to make his name known as a prominent voice of an Arab novelist and short-story writer. Today he is a distinguished writer of modern Arabic literature. The importance of this book derives from the fact that al-Tayyib Salih deals primarily with a crucial theme in modern Arabic literature - the clash between Eastern and Western cultures - and sheds an interesting light on this conflict. He is aware of the importance of the questions he raises and pursues them because they are at the core of the issue of modernity. The question of individual and collective identity during a time of change is therefore a major issue in al-Tayyib Salih's work, as well as in the work of other prominent Arab authors. al-Tayyib Salih's uniqueness is evident in the poetic style of his writing, in which he combines elements of classical Arabic literature with modern Western literature, especially of the English tradition. Although it is difficult to pinpoint a reason for his success, perhaps the key to understanding the work of al- al-Tayyib Salih is in its simplicity.In poetic terms, his literary devices, in addition to his usage of various writing techniques are very diverse. A prime example of this is the way the author chooses to shape his characters, making impressive repeated use of the same characters in a number of his works, changing their significance, status, and centrality, thus interconnecting them into a single corpus. These poetic elements, in addition to the variety of themes, raise the standard of writing to the level of poetry on the one hand, while giving the reader a sense of his mythical and magical world on the other.

The importance of the text which is used as the basis of this book was first recognized in the 1950s by both Claude Cahen and R.B. Serjeant. By good fortune, their individual research efforts were brought together by a mutual friend and colleague and from the 1950s until their deaths in the 1990s they worked intermittently on the text in collaboration. Alas, at the time of their deaths, nothing of their scholarly endeavours had been published. This relatively short treatise with its description of the roles of many government officials and its lists of taxes etc., is of immense importance to scholars of the medieval Middle East in general and to those of Arabia and the Yemen in particular. It is of tremendous importance as a primary source for the economic history of the thirteenth, fourteenth and early fifteenth century Rasulid state. It is hoped that the facsimile edition which is fully annotated and contains all the necessary introductory material, as well as glossaries and indices, will enable scholars to exploit the contents of this fascinating early fifteenth century document to the full.

The book is a fully annotated translation of al-Shayzari's Nihayat al-Rutba fi Talab al-Hisba (The Utmost Degree in the Pursuit of Hisba), a manual written in the 12th century AD for the practical use of the Islamic inspector of markets. It is the earliest extant book of its kind to appear in the Islamic East. Dr Buckley's introduction deals with the historical development of the Islamic market inspector, the author of the manual and the text itself. A useful Appendix contains translations of official diplomas of investiture, along with an abbreviated translation of al-Ghazali's treatise of isba. Within the main text, individual chapters deal with such as confectioners, perfumers, money-changers, slave traders and physicians. This book centres around a critical edition and annotated English translation of an Arabic medical writing: On the Errors of the Physicians in Damascus, composed by the Jewish philosopher, Jacob ben Isaac (fl. AD 1202). The edition and translation are framed by a bio-bibliographical sketch of the author, a source-critical study of the text, a detailed description of the extant manuscripts, and various indices which make the material accessible from different angles.
