Don Monson's article makes good usage of Jauss's reception theory and analyzes the third Dialogue of Book I, Chapter 6 of De Amore in a thorough and intelligent way. Important aspects of the relationship between "scientific" Latin treaties and Provençal courtly poetry are neatly demonstrated.Karen Gross examines structural and thematic resemblances between the Aeneid and De Casibus, arguing that Anchises' "pageant of future Roman worthies" (Aen. VI) is connected to the frame structure of De casibus. The author is interested in "global similarities, not local verbal echoes," and believes that the "structure resonances" have implications for "how Boccaccio understood the interaction between history and poetry, between the living and the dead." Volume 22, Diversity, is a special volume in the new series of Medievalia et Humanistica, focusing on the diversity of voices in medieval and early Renaissance literature. Six original articles explore themes of law, art, and piety at all levels of medieval and early Renaissance society, from the common audience of Malory's England to the aristocratic courts of Germany. . In addition to these six original articles, this volume offers two review articles and 28 review notices on 49 recent publications. Scholars, teachers, and students will find this volume presents a sampling of the variety and abundance of medieval and early Renaissance studies today.

Volume 37— Literary Appropriations—examines medieval literature in a different light. This volume features six original articles, focusing on the art of appropriation, as well as fourteen reviews of recent scholarly publications. The first article “The Oldest Manuscript Witness of the First Life of Blessed Francis of Assisi” by Jacques Dalarun reveals the oldest known source of the writings of Francis of Assisi, until of late only found in an Italian church publication. Lisa Bansen-Harp’s essay “Ironic Patterning and Numerical Composition in the Vie de saint Alexis: Form and Effect/Affect” takes an ironic look at the oppositions used throughout the work to offer a rich analysis of patterns. Reexamining genealogy as spiritual rather than biological is Nicole Leapley’s essay “Rewriting Paternity: The Meaning of Renovating Westminster in La Esoire de seint Aedward le rei.” David Lummus’s essay “Boccaccio’s Three Venuses: On the Convergence of Celestial and Transgressive Love in the Genealogie Deorum Gentilium Libri” provides a comparative look of how love—celestial and transgressive—can be seen in the Decameron. “Dante’s Justinian, Cino’s Corpus: The Hermeneutics of Poetry and Law” by Lorenzo Valterza compares and contrasts Dante’s own view of law versus that of his friend Cino da Pistoia. For more than fifty years, Medievalia et Humanistica has fostered conversation across disciplines, languages, and methods. This special issue continues that spirit by opening up the vibrant “textual universe” surrounding Marco Polo’s Devisement dou monde. Instead of treating the book as a fixed classic, contributors show how it lived many different lives—as a Franco-Italian narrative, a Venetian redaction, a Dominican Latin translation, a Middle French courtly text, and eventually a staple of early print culture.Readers are invited into newly reassessed stories—such as the dramatic but historically elusive Ethiopian bishop episode—and into Marco Polo’s encounter with Mongol urban design through a semiotic reading of Shangdu. Other essays trace how the VA version reshaped the work for religious communities and how the rediscovered Foligno manuscript (VA6) enriches our understanding of its transmission. Detailed studies of Francesco Pipino’s Latin translation, including the Gouda incunable once annotated by Christopher Columbus, help reveal how Polo’s book entered classrooms, libraries, and printshops from the late Middle Ages into the modern era.Volume 51 is dedicated to "Marco Polo's Textual Universe". Introduced by Marc Kruse and Mario Klarer, it offers six original articles on various aspects of the Devisement dou monde: the relation between fact and fiction (Hubert Alisade), Marco Polo's perception of urban spaces (Eugenio Burgio), the rediscovered Foligno witness (Samuela Simion), Francesco Pipino's Latin translation (Carlo Giovanni Calloni), fifteenth-century French translation (Laura Tomasi), and the Devisement's editorial history in the early modern period (Alvise Andreose). The volume is rounded off with six review articles, ranging from the Jewish diaspora in the Western World, from Dante's negotiating between Latin schoolbooks and vernacular poetry, to the servus callidus on the early modern stage, from Shakespeare's contesting authority through liminal spaces, to 17th-Century Jesuit Plays in Latin staged in Japan.
