This book explores in detail new protest organisation and mobilisation strategies of young activists in the digital age with the aim to identify the tactics that worked well against those creating high risks in the context of digitally supported protests. Focusing on Egyptian protests as well as peaceful protests in Syria, the book offers rich and unique data as it brings together the experiences and voices of the key figures involved in the protests, both on the ground and online. It challenges perspectives that defined the Arab uprisings as leaderless movements formed through the non-hierarchical communication of digital technologies. The author presents three kinds of leaders that shape the political communication environment in digitally supported protests and highlights the significance of their leadership skills to the movements’ capacities.

What is character education? Why has it risen up the political agenda in the UK in recent years? And what does it mean in pedagogical practice? This book addresses these questions, challenging the individualistic and moralistic ideas underlying the clamour amongst politicians, educators and authors to promote ‘grit’, ‘resilience’ and ‘character’ in schools. Closely examining a range of teaching resources, the book shows that the development of character is wrongly presented as the solution to a wide variety of social problems, with individual citizens expected to accommodate themselves to the realities of the contemporary economic context, rather than enhancing their capacities to engage in civic and political activities to bring about changes they wish to see. The book argues that there is a tried and tested alternative to character education, which is far more likely to strengthen British democracy, namely, citizenship education.

The overarching aim of this edited volume is to investigate different modes, patterns and determinants of youth political participation in Greece, since the economic crisis, by incorporating a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. The chapters examine different forms of youth political participation, from institutionalized (such as voting, or membership in political parties) to non-institutionalized (such as signing petitions, protesting through demonstrations or occupations, and political consumerism). Moreover, the chapters shed light on diverse aspects of youth political participation, such as the interlinkages between occupational precarity and political behaviour, the spatial portrait of youth political engagement in rural, suburban and urban Greek contexts, the engendered aspects of political involvement, the pivotal role of protest events in youth political socialization and in mobilization in contentious political actions, the different impacts of priming inequality on youth’s political beliefs, depending on different modes of thinking, as well as the key features of youth-related and youth-led (non-state) organisations operating in Greece. The aforementioned aspects are examined at the micro, meso or/and macro level through distinct methodological approaches including panel survey, experimental survey, biographical interviews, in-depth interviews and action organization analysis, carried out in the context of the EURYKA (European Commission) project.

This book investigates key trends in youth political participation in the UK, Europe, and the United States since the turn of the century—with a focus on the UK General Election and the US Presidential Election that were both held in 2024. It explores the reasons why many young people seem to have become disillusioned with electoral politics in the aftermath of recent youthquake elections, such as the 2017 UK General Election (with their overwhelming support for the Labour Party) and both the 2008 and 2020 US presidential elections (in support of Obama and Biden). We attribute their disenchantment to failures of public policy (that seem to increasingly favour older generations) and of communication—resulting in political parties’ inabilities to effectively connect with young people on issues that they prioritise and that have meaning for their everyday lives. The book shows how this led to lower turnouts in 2024 in both the UK and the USA and highlights the very low rates of participation amongst youth from lower socio-economic groups. This is potentially dangerous for democracy; if young people continue to feel let down by parties and to abstain from voting, it is likely to lead to more reactive public policy and to increases in the attraction of populist (or extremist) parties and candidates to young people. The book emphasises the need for mainstream parties and candidates to provide a more meaningful youth offer and to mobilise young people through horizontal forms of communication. From a young person’s perspective, the book also shows how (citizenship) education can play an important role in resisting populism and disinformation and in rejuvenating democracy.

This book examines how student debt informs the political action and participation of university students. The scale of student debt is unprecedented, particularly in the English-speaking world. In these democracies, debt has become an increasingly integral part of student life for many young people to enable participation in education and the wider economy. Using New Zealand as a case study, the author challenges existent assumptions about student attitudes towards loans by analysing how students speak about the impact of debt on themselves and their peers, including politically. Listening to these perspectives will provide a more nuanced insight into the underlying tensions and challenges of participating politically in a context of rising debt.
