This volume contains the proceedings from the Phytochemical Society of Europe's symposium on this topic, held August 24-27, 1997, in Uppsala, Sweden. In it, leading academic and industrial scientists discuss methods for assaying natural products to find new structure-activity relationships. Of key importance in this process is the availability and reliability of specific bioassay methods, but chapters also discuss chemical and biological diversity and how to dereplicate natural product extracts to increase efficiency in lead discovery. Anti-tumour, HIV-inhibitory, antiprotozoal, anti-infective and immunomodulatory natural products are discussed. Various industrial projects are presented. The volume seeks to bridge the gap between academic and industrial research, and should be useful reading in drug companies and faculties of pharmacy, as well as serving scientists in pharmacognosy, pharmacology, phytochemistry, natural products and drug discovery.

The emphasis of the book is centred on processes related to the dominant pathways of carbohydrate production and utilisation, and is arranged to reflect the current focus of researchers on three broadly overlapping areas of investigation. Topics include the molecular architecture of selected enzymes of primary metabolism, the integration of metabolism between organelles, cells, tissues and organs, and the manipulation of major pathways of carbohydrate metabolism. Each of the contributors is an internationally recognised researcher who presents a cogent summary of recent advances in the field. The volume will be of particular value to undergraduates, graduates and advanced researchers in plant biology, biotechnology and biochemistry, as well as researchers in related areas of plant physiology, crop production and horticulture who need to keep abreast of current developments in the understanding of the fundamental aspects of plant carbohydrate metabolism.

Saponins are glycosides of triterpenes, steroids or steroidal alkaloids. They can be found in plants and marine organisms. Very diverse biological activities are ascribed to saponins and they play important roles in food, animal feedstuffs, and pharmaceutical properties. This volume provides a selection of work on saponins presented at a symposium in Pulawy, Poland, in 1999. Many different aspects are treated: analysis, separation, biological activities, relevant use in human and animal nutrition, and ecological significance.

This text deals with the latest in the field of polysaccharides and related products and their biological activities, especially the immunological effects. The different chapters describe the structure and bioactivity of polysaccharides from plants used in traditional medicine in different parts of the world, especially China, Japan and Europe. The focus of the book is on immunologically active plant and seaweed polysaccharides, pharmacological activities of sulphated polysaccharides of animal and seaweed origin, and on possible activities of polysaccharides in our food. Methods for isolation and characterisation of the polymers with chemical and enzymatic methods is covered, as well as discussions on the different biological test-systems and the information they provide. This book should be useful to scientists and postgraduate students working with polysaccharides and their possible uses, and should be of interest for people working in the areas of chemistry, biology, pharmacy and medicine.

The volume deals with several aspects of the chemistry of both synthetic and natural organic compounds related to flavours and fragrances. It is organized in four sections: flavours and fragrances of foodstuffs; essential oils and other natural products from plants; applied aspects of flavour and fragrance production and detection; and analytical aspects of flavour and fragrance isolation and identification. The book should be of interest to academic and applied scientists in the field of organic chemistry, phytochemistry, analytical chemistry and food science.

In this volume, the effect of nutritional habits and wine consumption on ageing and the main degenerative diseases (cardiovascular, cancer, Alzheimer's, etc.) are considered through the most relevant epidemiological and pharmacological studies. Newly isolated wine polyphenols and tannins are presented and their structures and in vitro biological properties are discussed that could strongly support the hypotheses that those molecules could insure beneficial health effects. This work should be of particular interest to people involved in problems of public health, but also in the wine industry or in wine making, as well as to physicians who are concerned by the difficult question of ageing and its related chronic diseases.

This title deals with a variety of aspects of natural product research. It includes review articles and revised original contributions involving analysis, isolation and structure elucidation, synthesis and bioactivity of terrestrial and marine natural products. For example, plant cell biotechnology for the production of secondary metabolites is discussed. This volume also provides information about the industrial application of natural products for medicinal purposes. The broad interdisciplinary approach found in this book, which comprises 50 papers, makes it interesting to the scientists, whose work is in any way related to the research or use of natural products.

Over the past decade, advances in molecular biology have provided the impetus for a resurgence of interest in plant metabolism. At a general level, the potential for modifying the quantity or quality of harvestable crop products through genetic manipulation has provided an agronomic rationale for seeking a greater understanding of primary plant metabolism and its regulation. Moreover, the now facile techniques for transformation of many plant species and the consequential capacity to manipulate the amounts of specific individual enzymes within specific cell types provides an exciting direct approach for studying metabolic problems. Such transgenic plants are also becoming invaluable tools in studies at the interface between metabolism and other sub-disciplines such as physiology and ecology. The interest generated in plant metabolism by these developments has also encouraged the re-introduction of more conventional biochemical techniques for metabolic analysis. Finally, in common with other areas of cell biology, the wealth of information that can be obtained at the nucleic acid level has provided the stimulus for identification and characterisation of metabolic processes in far greater detail than previously envisaged. The result of these advances it that researchers now have the confidence to address problems in plant metabolism at levels not previously attempted. This book presents the proceedings of an international conference held on 9-11 January 1997 at St Hugh's College, Oxford under the auspices of the Phytochemical Society of Europe.
