This book engages a key question facing governments and similar institutions in countries of immigration or emigration: how should these governments and institutions communicate with immigrants so that they will listen to and act on their messages?Drawing on original research with Mexican emigrants in New York and the Mexican government’s Seguro Popular health care program, the authors examine the ways in which governments integrate migrants into diasporic political, medical, educational, and other systems, and how migrant-sending countries communicate with their emigrants abroad. In analyzing how these efforts fail or succeed, this book presents strategies and policy recommendations that many governments and institutions can use to engage their citizens or clients ethically and effectively.Offering a valuable approach to the study of race, migration, and public policy, this book will be of key importance to researchers and graduate students in public health, sociology, marketing and business, political science, Latinx studies, and international communication.

This book examines the discourse of a "post-AIDS" culture, and the medical-discursive shift from crisis and death to survival and living. Contributions from a diverse group of international scholars interrogate and engage with the cultural, social, political, scientific, historical, global, and local consumptions of the term "post-AIDS" from the perspective of meaning-making on health, illness, and well-being. The chapters critique and connect meanings of "post-AIDS" to topics such as neoliberalism; race, gender, and advocacy; disclosure; relationships and intimacy; stigma and structural violence; family and community; migration; work; survival; normativity; NGOs, transnational organizations; aging and end-of-life care; the politics of ART and PrEP; mental illness; campaigns; social media; and religion. Using a range of methodological tools, the scholarship herein asks how "post-AIDS" or the "End of the Epidemic" is communicated and made sense of in everyday discourse, what current meanings are circulated and consumed on and around HIV and AIDS, and provides thorough commentary and critique of a "post-AIDS" time. This book will be an essential read for scholars and students of health communication, sociology of health and illness, medical humanities, political science, and medical anthropology, as well as for policy makers and activists.

This volume explores the conditions under which women are empowered, and feel entitled, to make the health decisions that are best for them. At its core, it illuminates how the most basic element of communication, voice, has been summarily suppressed for entire groups of women when it comes to control of their own sexuality, reproductive lives, and health. By giving voice to these women’s experiences, the book shines a light on ways to improve health communication for women.Bringing together personal narratives, key theory and literature, and original qualitative and quantitative studies, the book provides an in-depth comparative picture of how and why women’s health varies for distinct groups of women. Organized into four parts—historical influences on patient and provider perceptions, breast cancer the silence and the shame, make it taboo: mothering, reproduction, and womanhood, and sex, sexuality, relational health, and womanhood—each section is introduced with a brief synthesis and discussion of the key questions addressed across the chapters.

This book provides a social and cultural theoretical framework for the digitalization of healthcare communication from a patient-centred perspective.Through empirical case studies, the book outlines the experiences of patients as the digitalization of healthcare communication re-spatializes and re-temporalizes care and reconstructs patienthood and ill health. To demonstrate how changes in communication impacts health and illness, the book examines the digitalization process from three viewpoints. Firstly, it illustrates how the digitalization of illness enhances the availability of information and peer support, which increases patient empowerment. Secondly, it shows how the digitalization of disease transforms signs of disease in a patient’s body into electronic data, increases the distance between the disease and the patient, and enables diagnosis without a healthcare professional touching a patient’s body. Finally, it explains how the digitalization of sickness changes the power relations founded in health and reconfigures health citizenship.Filling a theoretical gap in health communication scholarship, this book will be of interest to academics and postgraduate students in the field of Health Communication, Digital Communication, Communication Studies, and Health Sciences. The book also offers healthcare professionals new perspectives to respond to the increasing communicative duties arising from the digitalization of healthcare communication.
