Affirmative action in US college admissions has inspired fierce debate as well as several US Supreme Court cases. In this significant study, leading US professors J. Scott Carter and Cameron D. Lippard provide an in-depth examination of the issue using sociological, policy and legal perspectives to frame both pro- and anti-affirmative action arguments, within past and present Supreme Court cases. With affirmative action policy under constant attack, this is a crucial book that not only explains the state of this policy but also further deconstructs the state of race and racism in American society today.

Beer in the United States has always been bound up with race, racism, and the construction of white institutions and identities. Given the very quick rise of craft beer, as well as the myopic scholarly focus on economic and historical trends in the field, there is an urgent need to take stock of the intersectional inequalities that such realities gloss over. This unique book carves a much-needed critical and interdisciplinary path to examine and understand the racial dynamics in the craft beer industry and the popular consumption of beer.

Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) refers to the proportional overrepresentation of minority youth at each step of the juvenile justice system. This book addresses the issue of color-blind racism through an examination of the circular logic used by the juvenile justice system to criminalize non-White youth.Drawing on original data, including interviews with court and probation officers and juvenile self-reports, the authors call for a need to understand racial and ethnic inequality in the juvenile justice system from a structural perspective rather than simply at the level of individual bias. This unique research will contribute to larger discussions on how race operates in the United States.

Driven by consumers’ desire for slow and local food, craft breweries, traditional butchers, cheese makers and bakeries have been popping up across the US in the last twenty years. Typically urban and staffed predominantly by white middle class men, these industries are perceived as a departure from tradition and mainstream lifestyles. But this image obscures the diverse communities that have supported artisanal foods for centuries.Using the oral histories of over 100 people, this book brings to light the voices, experiences, and histories of marginalized groups who keep Southern foodways alive. The larger than life stories of these individuals reveal the complex reality behind the movement and show how they are the backbone of the so-called "new explosion" of craft food.

In this hard-hitting book, the Lower Ninth Ward - ground zero for Hurricane Katrina - becomes a microcosm of what happens when white actors venture into black spaces for humanitarian aid.Through vivid vignettes, Harvey exposes how blacks are often hindered in their efforts to rebuild their neighborhoods by seemingly progressive ideas and color-blind urban narratives.Addressing the failure of disaster and environmental studies to see black communities as agents, the book demonstrates what critical disaster studies can offer for understandings of race, the environment and diversity. This is a key contribution to debates on race, including the limitations of ‘white allies’ in places like Ferguson, Missouri and in the Black Lives Matter Movement.

In the 2010s, London’s LGBTQ+ scene was hit by extensive venue closures. For some, this represented the increased inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in society. For others, it threatened the city’s status as a ‘global beacon of diversity’ or merely reaffirmed the hostility of London’s neoliberal landscapes. Navigating these competing realities, Olimpia Burchiellaro explores the queer politics of LGBTQ+ inclusion in London. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted with activists, professionals and LGBTQ-friendly businesses, the author reveals how gender and sexuality come to be reconfigured in the production and consumption of LGBTQ+ inclusion and its promises.Giving voice to queer perspectives on inclusion, this is an important contribution to our understanding of urban policy, nightlife, neoliberalism and LGBTQ+ politics.

Black women academics often navigate higher education systems that render them hyper(in)visible or intellectually disposable. This book explores their experiences in British and postcolonial British Caribbean universities, drawing on intersectional frameworks and qualitative research. Through in-depth interviews and intersectional renderings, it examines how these scholars resist marginalization, build community and challenge institutional inequities. Grounded in Black British Feminism and Afro-Caribbean Feminist Thought, the volume illuminates the strategies that sustain and transform academic lives while addressing systemic barriers. This is an important contribution to debates on race, gender and coloniality in comparative higher education, offering insight for researchers, educators and policymakers committed to equity and inclusion.
