J. Daniel Jenkins is Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of South Carolina. His research focuses on music of the twentieth century, with particular emphasis on Arnold Schoenberg and Elliott Carter.

The contents - more than eighty items - range from Schoenberg's major analyses to smaller statements, squibs, letter excerpts, marginalia, and ephemera from the composer's archival legacy. Following a preliminary group of essays of a general nature, the writings are sorted by the composition to which they principally refer. This makes the book especially useful since the essays--mostly available though scattered throughout a variety of existing sources--are here presented together and in English translations.
