Ageing in Contexts of Migration

Ute Karl is Associate Professor of Social Work at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Work, Social Pedagogy, Social Welfare at the University of Luxembourg.Sandra Torres is Professor of Sociology and Chair of Social Gerontology in the Department of Sociology at Uppsala University.

"The editors tackle issues associated with unprecedented worldwide aging and the concomitant pressures of increased migration. Organized into three parts, “Elderly Care Regimes and Migration Regimes,” "Aging in the Context of Migration," and "Elderly Care in the Context of Migration," the volume focuses on national perspectives in those areas. The contributors deal with aging processes, migration processes, and older people as providers of care in the world, especially in Europe and the US. They aim to shift the research focus from what the editors call a “reductionist” approach of “who older migrants are and what they need,” raising questions and concepts that identify broad areas for future research and policy directions. Papers often provide a historical, political, and sociocultural context to the particular situation of the older individuals and care workers in the targeted country. Though some papers address trends across countries, others focus on a particular country, including Sweden, Poland, Luxembourg, the UK, Germany, France, the US, Italy, and Denmark. Some theoretical concepts include how and why migrants might return to their countries of origin, professional identities of care workers, and what is work in the context of retirement."R. R.
