This volume focuses on trans panic to characterise the nature of current mobilisations against trans and gender-diverse populations, while also highlighting structural and historical dimensions of transphobia and the ways in which it is politicised for reactionary purposes.Contemporary anti-trans politics have become a central part of far-right mobilisation across electoral and protest arenas. Simultaneously, transphobia has become increasingly visible in mainstream debates about gender and sexuality across diverse cultural contexts, illustrating the broad ideological purchase of trans panic for a wide range of actors. However, the centrality of anti-trans mobilisation has to date received limited attention in the scholarship on the far right and the literature on anti-gender politics. This book connects trans panic to different ideas and ideologies, while addressing the various strategic and mediated forms of communicating trans hostility. Including chapters focused on Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia, the volume shows the truly global nature of trans panic in contemporary politics. Together, they illustrate how trans panic constitutes both a central component and a flexible strategic tool of authoritarian governance.The book is aimed at a wide variety of scholars, students, and general readers, especially those interested in the far right, extremism, and radicalism.

Celestine S. Kunkeler is an historian of modern Europe, affiliated with the Centre for Research on Extremism (University of Oslo). They have published extensively on fascist and radical right networks and cultures in north-western Europe and currently research political reactions against gendered and sexual deviance.Iris B. Segers is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Research on Extremism and the Centre for Gender Research (University of Oslo). Her research investigates the intersections of knowledge production, gender, and the far right, with a specific focus on anti-gender and anti-trans mobilisation.Audrey Gagnon is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Political Studies and is affiliated with the Centre for Research on Extremism (University of Oslo). Her research focuses on conceptions of national identity, far-right movements, and the ethics of researching the far right.Katherine Kondor is a Senior Researcher at the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies, and an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Research on Extremism (University of Oslo). Her research focuses on the culture of the extreme right, both online and offline.Greta Jasser is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Georg-August-University Göttingen. She was a project partner at the RADICAL NORM Project at IDZ Jena. Her research analyses the nexus of far-right and male supremacist movements and technology. She is a co-founder of the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism.
