Beskrivning
Tracing experimental art movements that emerged under dictatorships in Asia, Africa, and Latin America during the long 1970s, this book shows how artists confronted the double inheritance of colonialism and fascism.Ghosts of National Liberation brings together Marxism, world-systems analysis, anti-colonial theory, and Pan-African thought to shows how experimental culture opens paths beyond historical capitalism by refusing closure, embracing failure, and insisting on the possibility of the new. By excavating the cultural struggles of the 1970s Global South that were produced under conditions of censorship and violence, Kristin Plys reveals how new ways of seeing, hearing, and imagining the world can still break the repetition of empire and make another future thinkable – against the inheritance of the colonial and fascism that are mutually constituted. This book provides an important theoretical framework for contemporary Marxist theory, social history, and postcolonial studies, positing a unique and compelling vision of anti-fascist cultures and postcolonial struggles through sociological and aesthetic lenses.

Recensioner i media

“Kristin Plys’s Ghosts of National Liberation is a bold and original book. By interpreting the military dictatorships of the 1970s in the Global South as a return of fascism, it offers a powerful new lesson the colonial roots of authoritarian rule. It will interest anyone seeking to understand – and resist – the resurgent far right of our own time.”Marcello Musto, Professor of Sociology, York University
