Beskrivning
Understanding Viewpoint Diversity and Critical Thinking in Social Work offers social work students a systematic methodology for engaging with the polarized debates that define contemporary practice. While students are regularly exposed to particular theoretical frameworks, they are rarely trained to engage productively with perspectives that challenge those frameworks. This textbook provides practical tools for navigating contentious issues, from race and gender to mental health and economic justice, without defaulting to ideological rigidity or paralyzing relativism. Each chapter examines a contentious issue central to social work practice (race, gender, mental health, economic inequality, sexuality, ideology, relationships, education, competition and inclusion, and technology) by presenting the strongest versions of competing perspectives before seeking creative synthesis. Discussion guides, practical exercises, and case studies help students to identify partial truths in opposing viewpoints, recognize the limits of their own frameworks, and develop positions that honor complexity rather than collapsing into easy binaries.Designed as a primary textbook for courses in critical thinking, ethics, diversity and social justice, and professional development in BSW and MSW social work programs, this volume can also be used as supplementary reading in field education seminars, policy courses or capstone courses requiring students to engage with complex social issues.

“Rarely have I read such an engaging and thought-provoking book! Professor Alam adopts the centuries-old Yeshiva teaching method of asking students to present the best points of view on opposing issues, an approach he calls the "Point-Counterpoint' perspective, to constructively engage in discussing difficult contemporary issues, not with the aim of 'winning' an argument, but to enrich one's own understanding of diverse perspectives. He describes the rationale and conduct of this approach both to teaching but also to personal development. This is followed by 10 chapters tackling a contemporary but often contentious social issue, e.g., racism, masculinity, economic justices, ideological conformity, etc. Each chapter begins with a hypothetical scenario where individuals holding very diverse views have gathered, such as a social dinner among friends, a coffee shop, a faculty meeting, family reunion, etc. and then describes how the conversation harmfully escalates as each person presents their own view as the 'correct' one. He then describes the strengths of each opposing view, and how these can be, if not reconciled, as least treated with respect. The three appendices are excellent educationally, in describing the point-counterpoint methodology, providing a discussion guide for classroom use, some common fallacious arguments, and how to assess one's own institution for viewpoint diversity. I highly recommend Understanding Viewpoint Diversity and Critical Thinking in Social Work as a useful book for every liberal (in the original sense of the term) oriented person, especially faculty navigating complex student discussions.”Bruce A. Thyer, Ph.D., LCSW, BCBA-D, Distinguished Research Professor, College of Social Work, Florida State University“Navigating diverse worldviews is a cornerstone of effective social work practice. This important text equips practitioners with the practical skills needed to understand and empathize with clients whose value systems differ from their own, strengthening their capacity to provide effective, ethical, and culturally competent services.”David R. Hodge, Ph.D., M.S.W., Distinguished Professor of Spirituality, Religion and Culture, School of Social Work, Arizona State University“Understanding Viewpoint Diversity and Critical Thinking in Social Work by Dr. Alam offers a refreshing approach to engaging with today's most complex and divisive issues. At a time when many of us have witnessed the breakdown of good-faith dialogue, this book provides a thoughtful framework for re-engaging in civil discourse. As a social worker, I find this message especially compelling. Our profession is grounded in values of dignity and the centrality of human relationships, and works like this give me hope that we can begin rebuilding the social bridges that have fractured between us. This is a timely and important contribution for anyone committed to restoring civil discourse in a polarized world.”Mary K. Twis, PhD, LMSW-AP, Associate Professor in the Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social Work, New York“This is a timely book that deserves wide adoption by social work educators committed to ensuring that future professionals can engage complex issues with nuance and open-mindedness. Comprehensive in topical scope, Understanding Viewpoint Diversity and Critical Thinking in Social Work provides both relevant content necessary to analyze these issues and a highly useful framework for application across social work curricula and professional practice.”Naomi Farber, MSW, PhD, Professor Emerita, University of South Carolina, College of Social Work"This is the book we need right now. In concise and compelling language, Nafees Alam illustrates how to talk with each other instead of past each other, when discussing such contentiousness issues as race, gender, sexuality, immigration, wealth and more. Using a method he developed and used over the years- the point-counter point approach-he offers a way to lower the rancor, understand competing perspectives, and pursue solutions across deep differences."Vicki Lens, Professor, Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College, City University of New York
