Given that regional policy has fallen well short of its promise to reverse economic decline and alleviate entrenched inequalities, new approaches are needed. Cash in Hand responds by placing basic income at the center of a policy agenda for the twenty-fi rst century. Original and timely, it off ers a compelling vision of how income security can underpin more inclusive and resilient regional economies.Nik Theodore, Professor of Urban Planning and Policy, University of Illinois ChicagoCash in Hand reframes basic income in a way that policymakers have largely missed: as a pragmatic response to the instability that undermines regional economies. Drawing on a wide range of trials and policy debates, it off ers a lucid and persuasive assessment of both the promise and the limits of unconditional cash as a foundation for development.Evelyn Forget, Distinguished Professor of Economics and Community Health Sciences, University of ManitobaFrom three leading international experts of the policy and politics of basic income, Cash in Hand breaks new ground connecting basic income to spatial inequality. And it does so in a remarkably accessible way. For those that care about ‘left behind places’ and those that care about making basic income a policy reality this is essential reading.Ben Spies-Butcher, Co-Director of the Australia Basic Income LabDoussard, De Wispelaere and Chrisp’s Cash in Hand provides a vital and overdue contribution to the ongoing search for remedies to the entrenched problem of regional inequality and left-behind places which has confounded regional policy for decades. Based on a timely survey of basic income pilots in a regional context, this book highlights the scope for basic income to act as a underwriter for regional policy, helping other programs to work more eff ectively by easing precarity and supporting livelihoods.Danny MacKinnon, Professor of Regional Development and Governance, University of NewcastleThis incredible book provides the reader with great arguments how the basic income can be a good solution for regional development, which we already see playing out in the municipalities of Maricá and Niterói in Brazil.Eduardo Matarazzo Suplicy, State Representative for São Paulo, Brazil
