Doing Accessible and Inclusive Research

Emma Douglass is a Senior Lecturer, working in the School of Health and Social Wellbeing at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK.  She is a registered learning disability nurse and teaches across the nursing programme.  Emma teaches research methods to undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and allied health professionals, in addition to supervising degree and master’s students.  She is an early career researcher who has recently completed doctoral research. Emma used accessible research methods to explore how adults with learning disabilities are and want to be supported to make health decisions in line with Principle 2 of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. At the time of writing Emma is starting a Research Launching Fellowship with Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, focusing on the health of women with learning disabilities. Sally Dowling is an Associate Professor in Health Professions Education, working in Bristol Medical School at the University of Bristol, England, UK. She has a background in mental health nursing, sexual health advising and public health and has taught health professionals at the Open University and the University of the West of England, Bristol. She currently teaches on the Health Professions Education and Undergraduate Medicine programmes at the University of Bristol and co-leads the MSc Reproduction and Development. Sally has taught research methods to undergraduate and postgraduate students, in addition to supervising doctoral students. Her own research has primarily been about infant feeding; she has published widely in this area, including the co-edited volume, Social experiences of breastfeeding: building bridges between research, policy and practice (Policy Press). Sally lives in Bristol and has three adult daughters.
