Alianzas Familiares in Multilingual Education

Eric J. Johnson is Professor of Multilingual Education at Washington State University, USA. His research explores language policies and programs, community and family engagement, and language and social justice. His recent book publications include The Language Gap: Normalizing Deficit Ideologies (with David Cassels Johnson, 2021, Routledge) and Language and Social Justice in Practice (with Netta Avineri et al, 2019, Routledge).Luz A. Murillo is Associate Professor of Bilingual/Biliteracy Education at Texas State University, USA. She studies the literacies of bi/multilingual indigenous, immigrant, and Latinx children, families and teachers, working with novice and practicing bilingual teachers to (re)learn to embrace their own linguistic practices as powerful teaching tools.

This book ‘walks the walk’ by highlighting the work of successful alliances with schools and testifying to the assets brought by multilingual families. Importantly, authors and editors realize these affordances by offering chapters in English and Spanish, inviting conversations among multilingual voices. By focusing on family engagement with K-12 multilingual programs, this book fills a gap and offers promising lessons that can be gleaned when alliances are established and coalitions are formed with families to support children.
