Beskrivning
This volume deals with the music of the Devotio moderna, an influential religious movement in Northern Europe during the late Middle Ages. As its point of departure it takes a unique source from the second half of the fifteenth century, manuscript 16 H 34 (olim B 113) from the University library of Utrecht, which was hitherto largely unknown.Five studies deal with the codicological construction, the systems of notation, the function, liturgical and paraliturgical aspects and the polyphonic arrangements of the songs. The multi-disciplinary approach of this research makes the volume a valuable source for anyone interested in the Devotio moderna movement, especially musicologists, codicologists and (church-)historians. This volume is illustrated with many facsimiles from the manuscript and contains an edition of all the music of MS.16 H34.

'...Hascher-Burger has made several important contribution in this study...She has done generous amounts of meticulous research and has constructed an impressive interdisciplinary picture of the uses of music by followers of the modern devotion movement. She has also made available important, previously neglected songs of a type which seems to have been widespread among followers of the modern devotion. More generally, her study informs us that music was an important part of the everyday life of the movement.'Tanya Kevorkian, Sixteenth Century Journal, 2005.'This impressive work is the publication of a doctoral dissertation on a manuscript of hymnal music in the Neterlands from around 1500...Yet, her study proves remarkably interesting beyond her own discipline. It will be of benefit to theologians and church historians, especially to those with an interest in medieval liturgy and spirituality. It is a very fine, comprehensive, and readable study. It includes an index, a bibliography, and a brief summary in English.'Gesa Elsbeth Thiessen, Theological Studies, 2004.
