Rethink your view of the world with The Teachings of Don Juan, the first book in Carlos Castaneda's spiritual journey into the world of sorcery... The Teachings of don Juan is the story of Carlos Castaneda's extraordinary experiences. In 1960 Carlos Castaneda was a graduate student when he met Don Juan, a Yaqui Indian feared and shunned by the ordinary folk of the American Southwest because of his unnatural powers. During the next five years don Juan's arcana knowledge led Castaneda into a world of beauty and terror, ruled by concepts far beyond those of Western civilisation. Using medicinal herbs Castaneda lived through encounters with disembodied spirits, shamans in the form of huge wolves, and death in the shape of silver crows. Finally, after a night of utter terror in which he knew that his life was threatened by forces which he still cannot fully explain, he gave up his struggle to become a 'Man Of Knowledge'. 'It gives a different view of the world and challenges the ideas and beliefs that we have be taught, whilst also providing simple methods to changing the way we interact with the world on a day to day basis.' - 5* Reader Review

From “one of the most profound and influential thinkers of the century” (Deepak Chopra) comes the first groundbreaking book in the series that introduces don Juan Matus—a Yaqui Indian sorcerer whose teachings transcend the boundaries of conventional knowledge. The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge is a captivating work of anthropology and spiritual exploration, first published in 1968. Presented as a first-person account of Castaneda's apprenticeship with a Yaqui shaman named don Juan Matus whom he meets in the deserts of Mexico, it blends mysticism and personal narrative, chronicling Castaneda's journey into the world of shamanism and his experiences with altered states of consciousness. Through powerful rituals, psychoactive plants, and profound teachings, Castaneda begins to unravel the mysteries of perception, existence, and the nature of true knowledge. With every page, you’ll be drawn deeper into his quest to become a "man of knowledge"—someone who lives with unshakable purpose, clarity, and attunement to life’s hidden forces. Perfect for seekers of spirituality, explorers of consciousness, or anyone curious about ancient traditions, this book is a touchstone of countercultural thought and a portal to a world of alternate realities. Whether you’re navigating your own spiritual path or just looking to lose yourself in a mind-expanding adventure, The Teachings of Don Juan is a timeless invitation to see the world through new eyes.

Byron's exuberant masterpiece tells of the adventures of Don Juan, beginning with his illicit love affair at the age of sixteen in his native Spain and his subsequent exile to Italy. Following a dramatic shipwreck, his exploits take him to Greece, where he is sold as a slave, and to Russia, where he becomes a favourite of the Empress Catherine who sends him on to England. Written entirely in ottava rima stanza form, Byron's Don Juan blends high drama with earthy humour, outrageous satire of his contemporaries (in particular Wordsworth and Southey) and sharp mockery of Western societies, with England coming under particular attack.

Don Juan Tenorio is an important and influential Spanish classic which gives a softened, romanticised version of the infamous hero and ends, uniquely, in his repentance and salvation. First seen in 1844, it is Zorrilla's best-known play and is still performed every year in Spain on All Souls' Day. The play, in Ranjit Bolt's stunning rhyming verse translations, was given an extensive tour by the Oxford Stage Company in late 1990.

The Complete Poetical Works Volume 5: Don Juan

This study is a contextual reading of Byron's epic poem Don Juan which argues that the importance of the Don Juan legend has been considerably underestimated. Contemporary histories--critical, political, theatrical, and personal--reveal that innocent or neutral readings of the poem were precluded by the figure's notoriety. It demonstrates the invitation which the poem was seen to offer to specific categories of readership--especially those of women and of the working classes--and how their reading not only contributes to the meaning of the text but makes that reading inherently political. The scope of the book includes other versions of the Don Juan legend. It also engages throughout with a critique of traditional myth-criticism, using instead Lévi-Strauss's more inclusive definition of what constitutes a myth. It considers those discourses which have spoken of the Don Juan legend---philosophical, psychoanalytical, speech-act---and applies postmodernist and feminist theories to a consideration of both Byron's poem and the legend itself.

Contains: Don Juan, Precious Provincials, The Reluctant Doctor, George Dandin, The Miser, The Would-be Gentleman, Scapin the SchemerSince the second half of the seventeenth century, when Moli`re composed and performed his comedies, scarcely a decade has passed in which they have not been revived, imitated, or adapted; their appeal to twenty-first century audiences remains as great as to their initial public. This selection of seven of Moli`re's prose plays shows his versatility and indicates the reason for his enduring popularity. Whether he writes in a strictly defined historical context (as in Precious Provincials or The Would-be Gentleman) or whether he sets his plays in an almost mythical world (as in Don Juan); whether his plays are exuberant celebrations of light heartedness, ingenuity, and wit (The Reluctant Doctor and Scapin the Schemer) or whether they come closer in spirit to black humour (The Miser and George Dandin), they remain as fresh and vivid as ever. Don Juan , Byron''s best poem, is a sensational radical satire. It uses the legend of Don Juan to expose the male fantasies behind Romanticism and nineteenth-century public culture. Critics feared that the poem was a ''manual for vice'' and would corrupt society. Should England''s best selling author have been censored? This book looks at how Europe''s most famous literary celebrity shows his dark side in Don Juan , a canonical long poem and a pop culture masterpiece.

In Don Juan and the Point of Honor, James Mandrell undertakes a systematic examination of the many questions surrounding the legendary character. On the one hand, it might be argued that Don Juan threatens society, since he is supposedly an agent of social anarchy. On the other hand, given his intriguing sexual accomplishments, he could be viewed as a positive expression of life itself. James Mandrell shows what is at stake in the asking of such questions and, moreover, what is at stake in representations and considerations of Don Juan. After a discussion of the ways that Don Juan’s seductive powers infiltrate and influence the interpretations of texts of which he is a part, Mandrell continues with close readings of key Spanish literary works ranging from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. All of these works involve interrelated issues as regards Don Juan: the worldly uses and abuses of language; the power of literature to engender and embody other literary texts; seduction and its psychological and social subtexts; and society in relation to Don Juan as well as Don Juan’s role in society. Ultimately, these notions are tied into the concept of honor as it works in literature and society. Mandrell concludes with a study of modern adaptations of Don Juan and his story in various theories of culture, society, and economic organizations. What emerges is a view of Don Juan as a positive social force in patriarchal society and culture—as well as a force operative at the level of desire as it is made manifest in language. Mandrell shows that Don Juan should not be treated as an innocent or outmoded cultural artifact. Instead, he is a character whose story and vicissitudes are still significant in the context of our twenty-first-century world.
