"Ring, klocka, ring i bistra nyårsnatten..."

Using many unpublished and other primary sources as well as interviews with aides and associates of Hindenburg, the author shows in Hindenburg and the Weimar Republic how this proud and cautious man, naive in politics and preoccupied with his reputation among his fellow generals, failed to act in crucial situations, or hesitated until action was futile. He examines in detail Hindenburg's role during the fateful days when Hitler was forcing his way to the top, scheming to overthrow the republic of which President Hindenburg eventually appointed him chancellor. The book details which Germans pushed for overseas expansion, how they tried to implement their ambitions, and why they ultimately failed. Challenging the traditional belief that Hitler's supporters were largely from the lower middle class, Richard F. Hamilton analyzes Nazi electoral successes by turning to previously untapped sources--urban voting records. This examination of data from a series of elections in fourteen of the largest German cities shows that in most of them the vote for the Nazis varied directly with the class level of the district, with the wealthiest districts giving it the strongest support. The diplomatic and political events leading to the establishment of the German Empire have been studied extensively, but the social matrix of civic activity has been sadly neglected. Professor Hamerow fills this gap by dealing first with the development of the economy and the community under the influence of industrialization. He then considers the ideologies of the era and the groups supporting them: liberalism and the middle class; conservatism and the outlook of the old order; socialism and the emerging industrial working class. The final section of his book is on the structure of politics: the system of parties, the nature of civic organizations, and public opinion. Originally published in 1969. The rudimentary facts of the Beer Hall Putsch are well known. The myth and conjecture they have generated are now replaced by detailed evidence in Harold Gordon's history, a thorough analysis of the events leading up to the Putsch, the ideologies and people struggling for power in Bavaria in 1923, the Putsch itself, and its aftermath.
