An insight into the latest results from the world of operations research - a wide-ranging field, as is shown by the book's 24 sections, corresponding to the conference program itself. Although problems of a primarily methodological nature are discussed, the emphasis is placed firmly on practical subjects, such as reports from the fields of healthcare, environmental protection, logistics and traffic engineering. This selection also clearly illustrates the extent to which OR is spreading into and already interwoven in other scientific disciplines.

The logic of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) is im­ plemented in most commercial production planning software tools and is commonly accepted by practitioners. However, these peo­ ple are not satisfied with production planning and complain about long lead times, high work-in-process, and backlogging. As many researchers have pointed out, the reason for these shortcomings is inherent to the methods that are used. The research community is thus eager to find more sophisticated approaches. This book is an attempt to compile some state-of-the-art work in the field of production planning research. It includes mate­ rial that somehow dominates the existing MRP II concept. 15 ar­ ticles written by 36 authors from 10 countries cover many aspects related to MRP II. All papers went through a single-blind refere­ eing process before they were selected for being published in this book. When we received papers for this issue, we discovered that MRP II is a topic about which not only management scientists show interest. As the list of authors proves, industrial engineers, computer scientists, and-operations researchers from academia as well as practitioners have contributed to this book. This, we hope, makes the book of value for a broad audience. We thank all authors who submitted papers. And, we are in­ debted to Dr. Werner Muller from Springer for his support in this book project.

Auflage: Dieses Buch entstand aus Vorlesungen zur Einführung in Operations Research (OR) für Studierende der Betriebs- und Volkswirtschaftslehre, des Wirtschaftsingenieurwesens, der Wirtschaftsinformatik und der Wirtschaftsmathematik. Es zeichnet sich, in der Vermittlung der Grundlagen des OR, durch eine gelungene didaktische Aufbereitung des Stoffes aus und ist auch zum Selbststudium geeignet. Die Autoren beschreiben Verfahren algorithmisch und verdeutlichen sie anhand von aussagekräftigen Beispielen. Der Text behandelt lineare, ganzzahlige und kombinatorische, dynamische sowie nichtlineare Optimierung, Graphen- und Warteschlangentheorie, Netzplantechnik und Simulation. Das Schlusskapitel vermittelt die Lösung von OR-Problemen mittels Tabellenkalkulationssoftware. Es ist aber auch dann geeignet, wenn ein anderes Lehrbuch eingesetzt wird. Enthält neben Übungen auch Fallbeispiele, die unter Verwendung von Standardsoftware zur Optimierung gelöst werden und dient der Vertiefung des Verständnisses der Modellierung von Optimierungsproblemen. Zu jedem Kapitel finden sich zahlreiche Aufgaben, anhand derer die Anwendung der grundlegenden Methoden geübt werden kann. Einige Aufgaben erweitern und vertiefen darüber hinaus spezielle Fragestellungen, die im Lehrbuch nur knapp behandelt werden.
