Based on an ethnography of Fort St. George Museum in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, Remembering Empire explores the public and private politics of preserving the memory of the British period in the former seat of the British East India Company. K. E. Supriya shows how the preservation of artifacts and paintings from the British period has become a means through which the imperialist politics of empire are reworked in the cultural memory of the South Indian people. The Warrior Women of Television examines contemporary representations of the female action hero in three series: La Femme Nikita, Aeon Flux, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Detailed readings focus on the ways the structure and content of each series work to create specific understandings of the body that are in contrast to those of male-centered action texts. Arguing that television texts mediate larger cultural concerns, this book considers the feminist implications of the series and uses insights from critical writings on contemporary culture and the body to discuss the ways the female hero functions as a potent contemporary cultural symbol.

Roots and Routes is a poignant study of the social integration and identity formation of female refugee youth. Grounded in the practical experiences of adolescent Bosnian refugees living in New York City, the book gives voice to these youths’ experiences as they develop a sense of self in their newly adopted homes. Jacqueline Mosselson explores the tensions of affiliation that this process of identity formation generates as the refugees seek to understand ties that bind them to their past, their homeland, and their cultural and geographical roots. Of central concern is the way the identities of refugee youth are affected by new understandings of cultural capital and social expectations. Mosselson’s work draws on the theoretical literature of cultural studies and critical psychology to call into question long-held beliefs about the ways refugees «adapt» to the United States. In this powerful and moving book, the female refugee informants speak back to, and reflect on, the constraints as well as the possibilities of their transition, migration, and exile from their homelands.

Informed by whiteness studies, Kyle Kusz’s groundbreaking book examines the role that sport discourses play in reproducing a central, normative, and superior position for white masculinity in American culture and society at the turn of the twenty-first century. Specifically, Kusz illuminates how the American sports media – through cover stories detailing the so-called disappearance of the white (male) athlete in American sports or the rise of extreme sports – produced a set of contradictory images of white masculinity as victimized and unprivileged, yet superior and squarely centered in American culture, that shaped and were shaped by a broader cultural struggle to re-secure white male privilege.

This richly ethnographic book explores the relationship between migration and popular culture through a case study of the consumption practices of working-class, transnational Latina teens. While everyday practices are examined at the local level, the processes of identity construction that Vargas seeks to address are akin to those created by diasporic youth around the world. This book documents the barriers to success encountered by U.S. Latino films over the past three decades, as their proponents sought to secure distribution deals and prove the films’ worth as commodities. Over time, more studio and studio specialty divisions have acquired and circulated them; but many film distributors still do not understand the nuances of the U.S. Latino market and how to promote these films. The book includes interviews with marketers, publicists, and producers, and secondary research material from trade publications, newspaper articles, and websites, centering on marketing strategies, release dates, and box office figures. One of the first academic works to analyze the concurrent social and industrial factors within the U.S. Latino community and the larger Hollywood marketplace, this book examines and illuminates the history of U.S. Latino films.

The Rise of Weaponized Flak in the New Media Era presents the first book-length examination of flak as a form of political harassment, authored by a seasoned researcher on political discourse and mass media. Flak against news media was a component of the Edward Herman-Noam Chomsky seminal "Propaganda Model." However, in the thirty years since the model was introduced, flak has become an increasingly significant and prevalent sociopolitical force in its own right, in large part for the proliferation of new media platforms. Flak is not simply good faith or tough criticism. Rather, flak discourses and actions go on attack for the purpose of delegitimizing, disabling, and even criminalizing political foes, however tendentiously. The book presents cross-disciplinary appeal for students and scholars of mass media, new media, political science, and sociology—as well as for anyone concerned with today’s sociopolitical environment.Given the book’s seminal examination of the topic, the introductory chapters in Part I extensively map out flak’s current forms and delineate similarities and distinctions from scandal and activism. Newly-minted terminology is introduced to flesh-out contemporary flak (for example, flak-in-discourse, boutique flak, phantom flak).
