Varför blir det krig? Vad innebär globaliseringen för relationen mellan världens fattiga och rika länder? Varför uppstod det inbördeskrig i Syrien och i Jemen? Varför invaderade Ryssland Ukraina?

Internationella relationer ger kunskap om och förståelse för förutsättningarna för samarbete och konflikt i det internationella systemet. Dessutom får läsaren verktyg för att på ett mer övergripande sätt kunna tolka och förstå internationella relationer. Författarna lägger stor tonvikt vid tre av de mest centrala teorierna om internationella relationer: liberalismen, realismen och konstruktivismen. I boken presenteras dessa teorier genom att de på ett konkret sätt tillämpas på ett flertal konflikter eller händelser.

Den fjärde upplagan innehåller nyskrivna avsnitt om Rysslands angrepp mot Ukraina och kriget i Jemen. Krigen i Afghanistan och Irak har lyfts fram och utökats till egna fall med egna analyser. De nya analyserna ger en bild av ett internationellt system som i ökande utsträckning kännetecknas av konflikt, och där auktoritära stater, som Kina och Ryssland, har flyttat fram sina positioner. Något som bland annat lett till att Sverige ansökt om Natomedlemskap.

Våren 2022 beslöt Sverige – efter Rysslands attack på Ukraina – att avsäga sig sin militära alliansfrihet och i stället söka medlemskap i Nato. Beslutet innebar ett epokskifte i svensk utrikes- och säkerhetspolitik. Hur ska vi förklara och förstå denna förändring?Sverige har inte varit i krig på över 200 år. Sweden's foreign policy roles were shaped according to the degree of autonomy and integration deemed necessary for security, economic development, and social cohesion as perceived by the domestic political elite. The ensuing empirical analysis identifies this set of evolving roles in an increasingly unstable international security environment. This book examines under what scope conditions foreign policy actors adopt media logic. The authors analyze media logic under three specific scope conditions: uncertainty, identity, resonance. First, they lay out the general adaptation of media logic in the general debate of the UN General Assembly 1992-2010. They then explore the adaptation of media logic in Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom concerning the cases of humanitarian intervention in Côte d’Ivoire and Libya, both in 2011. The results indicate the need to move beyond the assumption of a general process of mediatization affecting politics in total. Instead, they point in the direction of a nuanced process of mediatization more likely under certain scope conditions and in certain political contexts.

The elections of nonpermanent members to the Security Council have become an increasingly competitive political and diplomatic game. Why do states assign to the lengthy, expensive, and difficult commitment that a Security Council candidature entails? What do they want to achieve and why are some states more successful in their endevour? This book establishes that the electoral results over time contribute to a stratified order between states and associate a term in the Council with multiple power enhancing benefits. It explores, especially, the significance of the campaigns carried out by competing candidates for the outcome of the UNSC elections. Hur påverkar och påverkas EU av de pågående maktförskjutningarna inom världspolitiken och utmaningarna mot den liberala världsordningen? Att grundpelarna i den liberala världsordningen såsom vi känner den sedan slutet av andra världskriget utmanas av starka krafter både inom och utom EU:s gränser utgör en av unionens hittills mest komplexa utmaningar. Komplexiteten grundar sig inte minst i att EU som organisation på samma gång är ett resultat av denna världsordning och en garant för densamma. EU:s roll i en världsordning under omvandling ger upphov till en rad frågor: På vilket sätt påverkas EU:s förmåga att främja hållbar handel och upprätthålla internationell frihandel av att USA driver en mer protektionistisk handelspolitik? Vilket handlingsutrymme har EU att agera i världspolitiken om multilaterala organisationer och globala regler undermineras? I decennierna kring 1950-talet, när framtidstron och optimismen i det svenska folkhemmet var som störst, pågick i bakgrunden ett kallt ideologiskt krig mellan öst och väst. I Sverige fruktade man en militär invasion från Sovjetunionen och sabotage från inhemska kommunistsympatisörer och nazister. I spåren av de påtagliga säkerhetshoten expanderade och befästes övervakningen av svenska medborgare. I Det röda hotet undersöks de hotbilder som ansågs föreligga åren 1945-1960. Statsvetarna Ann-Marie Ekengren och Henrik Oscarsson har studerat hur centralt placerade tidningsredaktörer, politiker, militärer och poliser uppfattade sin samtid. I studien har författarna analyserat ett omfattande, tidigare hemligstämplat material från säkerhetspolisen och den militära säkerhetstjänstens arkiv.
