This book explores how Scott''s work became an all-pervasive point of reference for cultural memory and collective identity in the nineteenth century, and why it no longer has this role. Ann Rigney breaks new ground in memory studies and the study of literary reception by examining the dynamics of cultural memory and the ''social life'' of literary texts across several generations andmultiple media. She pays attention to the remediation of the Waverley novels as they travelled into painting, the theatre, and material culture, as well as to the role of ''Scott'' as a memory site in the public sphere for a century after his death. Using a wide range of examples and supported by manyillustrations, Rigney demonstrates how remembering Scott''s work helped shape national and transnational identities up to World War I, and contributed to the emergence of the idea of an English-speaking world encompassing Scotland, the British Empire, and the United States. Scott''s work forged a potent alliance between memory, literature, and identity that was eminently suited to modernization. His legacy continues in the widespread belief that engaging with the past is a condition fortranscending it.

Referring to a wide range of cultural forms--periodicals, documentaries, archives, photography, but also graffiti and calendars--Rigney argues that storytelling itself intervenes in the present by mobilizing the power of cultural expression to reconnect with the aspirations and energies of predecessors. The changing memory of the Paris Commune is used as a red thread to tie together case studies, ranging from nineteenth-century socialists and anarchists to the Occupy movements of the 2010s and contemporary climate activism, and bring to light both continuities and transformations over time. Rigney's long-term approach shows that cultural memory and activism are deeply entwined across generations, that protest survives in memory even when the streets are emptied, and that culturally mediated stories provide a resource for activists in articulating new agendas. It reveals how cultural memory work has been used as a form of resistance to historical outcomes and as a tool for kick-starting older campaigns in new contexts. The role which narrative discourse plays in the writing of history is an area of increasing interest to historians and literary theorists, resulting in some of the most stimulating and controversial historiographical work in recent years. The rhetoric of historical representation represents one of the first attempts to carry out a sustained textual analysis of historiographical practice. Ann Rigney focusses on three celebrated nineteenth-century histories of the French Revolution, written by Alphonse de Lamartine, Jules Michelet and Louis Blanc. Imperfect Histories puts "imperfection" at the heart of a theory of historical representation. How can new, emergent media redefine or transform what is collectively remembered? The essays of this collection focus on social, historical, religious, and artistic media-memories. This innovative introduction to literary studies takes 'the life of texts' as its overarching frame. It provides a conceptual and methodological toolbox for analysing novels, poems, and all sorts of other texts as they circulate in oral, print, and digital form. It shows how texts inspire each other, and how stories migrate across media. It explains why literature has been interpreted in different ways across time. Finally, it asks why some texts fascinate people so much that they are reproduced and passed on to others in the form of new editions, in adaptations to film and theatre, and, last but not least, in the ways we look at the world and act out our lives. The Life of Texts is designed around particular issues rather than the history of the discipline as such. Each chapter concentrates on a different aspect of 'the life of texts' and introduces the key debates and concepts relevant to its study.
