Den 1 januari 2015 trädde Patientlagen (PL) (2014:821) i kraft. Det är alltså först nu som regler som riktar sig till patientkollektivet har skapats. Författaren undersöker PL:s reglers konstruktion och funktion med utgångspunkt från frågeställningarna om möjligheten att bli patient, dvs få patientstatus och vilka möjligheter som står till buds när man har erhållit patientstatus. Innehållet i kraven på "god vård", "vård på lika villkor" och "fördelning efter behovsangelägenhetsgrad" analyseras med hjälp av verktygen "rättssäkerhet" och "rättvisa". Även spörsmål som val mellan olika behandlingsalternativ, möjligheterna till "second opinion" och patientsäkerhet berörs.

Den tredje upplagan är uppdaterad med anledning av den nya hälso- och sjukvårdslagen (2017:30) och landstingens övergång i regioner.

Boken är lämplig som lärobok på kurser i förvaltningsrätt, socialrätt och medicinsk rätt på både juristutbildningar och socionomutbildningar och på läkar- och sjuksköterskeutbildningar.
