Contributing to the rapidly emerging field of ecolinguistics, this book explores the role of language in mediating and determining our relationship with nature and in shaping attitudes and social practices in environmental areas. In doing so, it maps out research pathways for informed ecological debate that concerns both the planet and the discipline.The book centres on two case studies. The first is a nature reserve near Siracusa in Sicily run by Fabio Cilea, where flamingos have begun to breed despite the devastation of the nearby coastline by one of the largest petro-chemical plants in Europe. The second is High Ash farm, a small farm near Norwich, UK. Farmer, Chris Skinner, is a passionate naturalist who for 30 years has presented a programme on BBC Radio Norfolk. Through analysing the discourse of both Skinner and Cilea, the book explores what it can reveal about the underlying environmental visions that sustain them. Together with the discourse of other engaged ecological figures, a picture emerges of the connections that exist between our beliefs/attitudes, language and the natural world.Presenting a framework for analysing environmental discourse from a primarily positivist standpoint, the book draws attention to the discourses that underline social practices felt to be useful, necessary and beneficial in these moments of environmental crisis. Although these contexts are European, the methodologies applied, as well as the ecological and linguistic issues dealt with, are universal, clarifying the relationship between social practices and language itself, viewed in the book as an ecosystem that is also in need of loving attention.

How do we communicate about plants in diverse socio-cultural contexts? Which underlying values and beliefs inform the positioning of plants in texts? Why is it essential to reflect on plant discourse at a time of climate crisis?Plants are life-sustaining protagonists on the planet, and their immense relevance in ecosystems and in our lives cannot be overstated. Yet, plants tend to be given less consideration than animals because their organisms are very different from ours, and their movements and actions are difficult to perceive because of our sensory limitations and different timeframes. Therefore, plants are often neglected and backgrounded, or discursively constructed as exploitable resources and commodities, especially in technological and urbanised social contexts. This results in discursive representations informed by de-animating and exploitative beliefs that have negative cascading impacts on the web of life. Vice versa, respect for all participants in Earth ecosystems, including plants, can foster ecojustice and wellbeing for all. This book analyses how we represent plants in a variety of socio-cultural and interactional contexts, in verbal and non-verbal texts. Since plant discourse has been under-represented in ecolinguistics so far, this study advocates for a plant turn in ecolinguistics, ecological discourse studies and ecomultimodality. Reflecting on how we speak and write about plants means giving recognition to the photosynthesising beings that sustain life on the planet.

What kind of language do we use to name and describe the animals that feature in our lives? What names do we give to animals as individuals and groups, and how do these influence our perceptions of them? It draws on a multi-million word corpus of texts from a wide range of sources, as well as interviews with professional communicators about animals and focus groups involving people with different experiences of, and attitudes towards, animals in various contexts. The book highlights both what we know from scientific research about the huge diversity of animals’ capacities and lifestyles, and how the language we use to communicate about them affects how we understand them and how we treat them. Exploring multilingual discourses on water in Senegal, this book takes ecolinguistics beyond its Eurocentric confinements and illustrates important contemporary developments in the field.Senegal is marked by a linguistic discrepancy: Wolof, spoken by roughly 90% of the population, is used in everyday communication, while French, spoken by roughly 20% of the population, is the only official language since colonisation. Inspired by water’s movement, this book proposes an innovative approach to studying two languages coexisting in one environment. Water is a constant in any natural environment and a crucial basis of human life. Its availability shapes socioeconomic and cultural practices, including language and discourse. In multilingual environments, speakers need to navigate contradicting evaluations and metaphors.The comparative and contrastive study of conceptualisations and discourses in two languages advances the discipline of ecolinguistics by integrating new approaches, methods, and contexts. The double-language approach unravels dimensions of meaning that would otherwise go unnoticed. With selected examples, the book demonstrates the relevance for other world regions and the global nature of water problems and water discourses. It offers researchers in ecolinguistics and (critical) discourse analysis a methodological framework to empirically investigate language practices beyond monolingualism.
