We thus need a systematic approach in order to understand, to build and to use models. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed short papers, workshops and doctoral consortium papers of the 22th European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems, ADBIS 2018, held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2018.

The 20 full and the 4 short workshop papers as well as the 3 doctoral consortium papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 54 submissions to the workshops and 6 submissions to the doctoral consortium. Furthermore, there are 10 short papers included, which were accepted for the main conference. The papers are organized according to the 6 workshops and the doctoral consortium: ADBIS 2018 short papers; First Workshop on Advances on Big Data Management, Analytics, Data Privacy and Security, BigDataMAPS 2018; First International Workshop on New Frontiers on Meta-data Management and Usage, M2U 2018; First Citizen Science Applications and Citizen Databases Workshop, CSADB 2018; First International Workshop onArticial Intelligence for Question Answering, AI*QA 2018; First International Workshop on BIG Data Storage, Processing and Mining for Personalized MEDicine, BIGPMED 2018; First Workshop on Current Trends in Contemporary Information Systems and Their Architectures, ISTREND 2018; Doctoral Consortium.

The 16 revised full papers and two keynotes were carefully reviewed and selected from 60 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: data Integration, conceptual models and ontologies; data management in semantic web; data analysis in medicine; data analysis in astronomy; information extraction from text.

This book provides a concise overview of modelling and programming by presenting their essential concepts. It enables the reader to better understand the relationships between modelling and programming by describing abstract properties, desired behaviours, intended structures, needed interactions, and other specific viewpoints on the overall system under development.

After an introduction to the importance of modelling and programming in the scope of system engineering in chapter 1, the book provides four main chapters covering systems, models, specifications, and programs, each of them with a set of reflection exercises. Chapter 2 explores how systems relate to reality, exploring different perspectives related to the purpose of the system. Chapter 3 explains what it takes to be a model and how models and systems are related and concludes with discussing model semantics, meaning, and correctness. In Chapter 4, specifications are debated which are precise descriptions of models and systems. It presents the language constructs needed to describe systems and shows how the constructs can be expressed in concrete languages, considering both the structure and the behaviour of models. Chapter 5 considers the creation, simulation, and correct execution of specifications (model descriptions or programs). Eventually, Chapter 6 presents a collection of real-world modelling cases. Apart from describing the case, the concepts of the book are applied to the case, thus giving a better understanding of the concepts.

The book is carefully designed to explain modelling and programming concepts, their relationships, and their use. Written for computer science students and lecturers, it covers systems, modelling, programming, simulation, and semantics.

The 17 regular papers presented together with two invited papers were carefully selected and reviewed from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections such as information extraction and integration; data mining and knowledge discovery; indexing, query processing and optimization; data quality and data cleansing; distributed data platforms, including cloud data systems, key-value stores, and big data systems; and streaming data analysis; web, XML and semi-structured databases.
