This extensively updated textbook introduces the transport system and its societal impacts in a holistic and multidisciplinary way. A timely second edition, it includes new analyses of travel behaviour and the transport system’s impacts on health and well-being.Key Features:Guidance for transport policy evaluation methods and modelling approachesSystematic approach to analysing higher-order impacts of interventions in the transport systemDiscussion of topical issues in transport policy, including analysis of current transport innovationsThe use of case studies to highlight interconnected aspects of the transport system and their relevance to decision makingExploration of the role of transport systems in providing accessibility and their impact on the environment, safety, health and well-beingInternational in scope, this textbook will be invaluable for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying disciplines such as transport policy and transport geography. It will also be useful to the professionals and policymakers in the transport industry.

This book enlarges the understanding of decision-making on mega-projects and suggest recommendations for a more effective, efficient and democratic approach. Authors from different scientific disciplines address various aspects of the decision-making process, such as management characteristics and cost-benefit analysis, planning and innovation and competition and institutions. The subject matter is highly diverse, but certain questions remain at the forefront. For example, how do we deal with protracted preparation processes, how do we tackle risks and uncertainties, and how can we best divide the risks and responsibilities among the private and public players throughout the different phases of the project?Presenting a state-of-the-art overview, based on experiences and visions of authors from Europe and North America, this unique book will be of interest to practitioners of large-scale project management, politicians, public officials and private organisations involved in mega-project decision-making. It will also appeal to researchers, consultants and students dealing with substantial engineering projects, complex systems, project management and transport infrastructure.

This timely book explores the likely success or failure of potential transport innovations. Chapters examine societally relevant effects of transport transitions, including impacts on the environment, accessibility, safety and more. It focuses on complex innovations in which both public and private actors are involved.Combining insights from innovation sciences with evolutionary economics, business economics, managerial sciences, psychology and history, the chapters consider state-of-the-art innovation theories applied to sustainable transport, with an emphasis on approaches to understanding behaviour. The book then explores a range of potential transitions, covering technological innovations such as vehicle electrification, e-bikes and light electric vehicles in city logistics, before moving on to look at service innovations including carsharing, mobility as a service and e-shopping.Offering coverage of both frameworks and innovation examples themselves, this book will be an interesting read for transport studies and innovation scholars. It will also be a useful tool for policy makers and planners working in the area.

This comprehensive and accessible Handbook presents state-of-the-art research on the decision-making processes in the deliverance of mega-projects - large infrastructure projects for the transportation of people and/or goods. The expert contributors explore how decisions are made at different stages in mega-projects and the multi-actor relationships between public and private partners. They evaluate the perspectives and pitfalls in determining the costs and benefits of a mega-project ex ante, and examine the wider impacts of mega-projects, including issues such as regional growth, energy transition and climate change. Although the focus is on the advanced economies of North America, Europe, and Australia, much of the material is useful for other parts of the world where large transport infrastructure projects are currently underway or will be developed in the coming years.Providing crucial background information for those who want to understand decision-making processes on large transport infrastructure projects, this fascinating Handbook will prove an important source of information for academics, researchers and students in the fields of transport, infrastructure, project management, management science, economic analysis (cost benefit analysis), public policy, environmental policy and ethics. Practitioners, politicians and policymakers involved in large transport infrastructure projects will also find this book to be an invaluable reference tool.Contributors: J.A. Annema, M. Transport pricing is high on the political agenda throughout the world, but as the authors illustrate, governments seeking to implement this often face challenging questions and significant barriers. The associated policy and research questions cannot always be addressed adequately from a mono-disciplinary perspective. This book shows how a multi-disciplinary approach may lead to new types of analysis and insights, contributing to a better understanding of the intricacies of transport pricing and eventually to a potentially more effective and acceptable design of such policies. The study addresses important policy and research themes such as the possible motives for introducing road transport pricing and potential conflicts between these motives, behavioural responses to transport pricing for households and firms, the modelling of transport pricing, and the acceptability of pricing.Studying road transport pricing from a multi-disciplinary perspective, this book will be of great interest to transport policymakers and advisors, transport academics and consultants and students in transport studies.

The revitalisation of railway station areas has been a hot issue in policy making in Europe in recent years. The introduction of two new railway systems - the high speed train and light rail systems - has pushed forward the redevelopment of not only railway stations themselves, but also of their - in many cases deteriorated - direct surroundings. Examples of revitali- tion of railway station areas can be found throughout Europe, for example in countries like England (Liverpool), France (Euralille), Germany (Berlin) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam South Axis). The dynamics of revitali- tion of railway station areas can best be understood by combining the - sights of several disciplines; economics, and spatial sciences being the most important disciplines. This book therefore addresses the subject from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Railway station area redevelopment projects try to cope with the - creased lack of interoperability and interconnectivity between infrastr- tures and boost the local/regional economy by creating a new high quality multifunctional urban landscape at the same time. At present, the initial outcomes with the transformation of deteriorated railway station areas into modern mixed office, shopping and residential areas stems hopeful, but what are the prospects of those redeveloped areas? Most of the papers contained in this volume were presented at the s- th cial session “Railway stations and urban dynamics” of the 45 conference of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) held in Amst- dam, the Netherlands during August 2005.
