The French School of Programming is a collection of insightful discussions of programming and software engineering topics, by some of the most prestigious names of French computer science. Modern civilization relies on a functioning information infrastructure. As a result, dependability has become a central issue in all disciplines of systems engineering and software architecture.Theories, methods and tools that help to master the problems encountered in the design process and the management of operations are therefore of utmost importance for the future of information and communication technology.The present volume documents the results of a research program on Dependable Information and Communication Systems (DICS). The members of the project met in two workshops organized by the Hasler Foundation. A Step Towards Verified Software Worries about the reliability of software are as old as software itself; techniques for allaying these worries predate even James King’s 1969 thesis on “A program verifier. ” What gives the whole topic a new urgency is the conjunction of three phenomena: the blitz-like spread of software-rich systems to control ever more facets of our world and our lives; our growing impatience with deficiencies; and the development—proceeding more slowly, alas, than the other two trends—of techniques to ensure and verify software quality. In 2002 Tony Hoare, one of the most distinguished contributors to these advances over the past four decades, came to the conclusion that piecemeal efforts are no longer sufficient and proposed a “Grand Challenge” intended to achieve, over 15 years, the production of a verifying compiler: a tool that while processing programs would also guarantee their adherence to specified properties of correctness, robustness, safety, security and other desirable properties. As Hoare sees it, this endeavor is not a mere research project, as might normally be carried out by one team or a small consortium of teams, but a momentous endeavor, comparable in its scope to the successful mission to send a man to the moon or to the sequencing of the human genome.

To prove the correctness of a program is to demonstrate, through impeccable mathematical techniques, that it has no bugs. To test a program is to run it with the expectation of discovering bugs. These two paths to software reliability seem to diverge from the very start: if you have proved your program correct, it is fruitless to comb it for bugs; and if you are testing it, that surely must be a sign that you have given up on any hope to prove its correctness. Accordingly, proofs and tests have, since the onset of software engineering research, been pursued by distinct communities using different kinds of techniques and tools. Dijkstra’s famous pronouncement that tests can only show the presence of errors — in retrospect, perhaps one of the best advertisements one can imagine for testing, as if “only” finding bugs were not already a momentous achievement! — didn’t help make testing popular with provers, or proofs attractive to testers. And yet the development of both approaches leads to the discovery of common issues and to the realization that each may need the other. The emergence of model checking was one of the first signs that apparent contradiction may yield to complementarity; in the past few years an increasing number of research efforts have encountered the need for combining proofs and tests, dropping earlier dogmatic views of incompatibility and taking instead the best of what each of these software engineering domains has to offer.

Attention is usually limited to the possible political and economic c- sequences, in particular the fears of loss of employment in the West. The aim of the present volume is di?erent. We recognize that o?shore development is here to stay, and not just a result of cost considerations. It is – more accurately – a form of distributed development, relying on advances in communications to let the software industry, in our globalizedworld,bene?t from the wide distribution of human talent. But it is also the source of a new set of challenges, to which accepted software engineering principles and techniques have not completely prepared us. Producing high-quality software on time and within budget is hard enough when the QA team is across the aisle from the core developers, and the customers across the street; what then when the bulk of the development team is across an ocean or two? The ?rst SEAFOOD – Software Engineering Advances For Outsourced and 1 O?shore Development – conference (prompted by an earlier article ) was an - tempt not only to bring software engineering to outsourcing but also to bring outsourcing into the collective consciousness of the software engineering c- munity. This is bene?cial to both sides: successful outsourcing requires strong softwareengineering guidance, but researchin the ?eld must for its part account forthenewworldofsoftwaredevelopment.

For the past 20 years the TOOLS conferences have continuously spread new technologies in the world of object-orientation, component technology and so- ware engineering in general. They constitute a particularly important forum for software researchers and practitioners to present work that relies on producing tools. This year's TOOLS continued the tradition and presented a strong program thatincluded originalcontributionsin allmajor?elds ofthe object-orientedp- adigm. As in TOOLS 2008, the concept of model occupied a considerable place; but other topics such as re?ection,aspects, modelling languages,debugging,and virtual machines design were also strongly represented. While most conferences had a decrease in the number of submitted papers, TOOLS made the choice of quality and decided to lower its acceptance rate to 25%,asa ?xedmaximumannouncedin the Callfor Papers.Out of67submitted contributions, the reviewing process led to the selection of 17 as full papers. For the ?rst time, two short papers were also accepted for presentation at the conference.
