EUNICE is a network of Universities throughout Europe. The EUNICE network has been created to foster the mobility of students, faculty ~nembers and research scientists working in the field of information and com~llunication technologies and to promote educational and research cooperation between its member institutions. The prime means for implementing these goals is the annual Summer School organized by the member institutions. From its conception, the EUNICE Summer Schools were designed as unique events where the joint participation of PhD students and supervisors working in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) is the key to create an event that goes far beyond a conventional international workshop. Furthermore, the Summer School is an open forum for the cooperation of the European member institutions and any other organisation interested European academiclresearch centre at all levels. This cooperation is paramount to successfully construct and participate in the European Higher Education Area, and especially, to achieve easy and effective exchange of research activities.

In the past few decades Computer Hardware Description Languages (CHDLs) have been a rapidly expanding subject area due to a number of factors, including the advancing complexity of digital electronics, the increasing prevalence of generic and programmable components of software-hardware and the migration of VLSI design to high level synthesis based on HDLs. Currently the subject has reached the consolidation phase in which languages and standards are being increasingly used, at the same time as the scope is being broadened to additional application areas. This book presents the latest developments in this area and provides a forum from which readers can learn from the past and look forward to what the future holds.

The Computer Hardware Description Languages' conference originated under IEEE/ACM sponsorship and since 1981 has been organized by IFIP Working Group 10.2 (now WG 10.5). Its general topic has had a significant history with over 100 HDLs published in the 1970s. Since the mid-1980s, HDLs have become commonplace in system design and VLSI. This can be attributed to many factors including the advancing complexity of digital electronics, leading to more sophisticated modelling, simulation and verification tools; the migration of VLSI design to high-level synthesis based on HDLs; advances in microelectronics CAD towards support of system-level design; and the increasing prevalence of generic and programmable components, of software-hardware and mixed digital-analogue hybrid designs. Presently, we are in a consolidation phase, in which languages and standards are increasingly being used, while the scope is being broadened to additional application areas (such as analogue, microwave or system-level design).This book should be of interest to engineers dealing with Hardware Design and Electronic Design Automation; manufacturers of computer systems and telecommunication equipment; and also to students and lecturers in electrical and computer engineering and computer science departments.

It is recognized that formal design and verification methods are an important requirement for the attainment of high quality system designs. The field has evolved enormously during the last few years, resulting in the fact that formal design and verification methods are nowadays supported by several tools, both commercial and academic. If different tools and users are to generate and read the same language then it is necessary that the same semantics is assigned by them to all constructs and elements of the language. This text puts forward a cohesive set of semantics for the VHDL language. The chapters describe several semantics each based on a different underlying formalism. Two chapters use Petri nets as target language and two of them higher order logic. Two use functional concepts and finally another uses the concept of evolving algebras. "Formal Semantics for VHDL" is intended for researchers in formal methods and can be used as a text for an advanced course on the subject.

Computation and communication technologies underpin work and development in many different areas. Among them, Computer-Aided Design of electronic systems and eLearning technologies are two areas which, though different, in fact share many concerns. The design of CAD and eLearning systems already touches on a number of parallels, such as system interoperability, user interfaces, standardisation, XML-based formats, reusability aspects, etc. Furthermore, the teaching of Design Automation tools and methods is particularly amenable to a distant or blended learning setting, and implies the interconnection of typical CAD tools, such as simulators or synthesis tools, with eLearning tools. There are many other aspects in which synergy can be found when using eLearning technology for teaching and learning technology.
EduTech: Computer-Aided Design Meets Computer-Aided Learning contains the proceedings of the EduTech2004 workshop, which was held in August 2004 in conjunction with the 18th IFIP World Computer Congress in Toulouse, France, and sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). Organized by IFIP WG 10.5 (Design and Engineering of Electronic Systems) in cooperation with IFIP WG 3.6 (Distance Education), the workshop proceedings explore the interrelationship between these two subjects, where computer-aided design meets computer-aided learning. The book includes papers related to eLearning in the area of electronic CAD, but also includes contributions tackling general issues of eLearning that are applicable to this and many other areas such as reusability, standards, open source tools or mobility.
This book will be of value to those interested in the latest developments in eLearning in general, and also to those coming from the electronic design field who want to know how to apply these developments in their area.

Formal methods for hardware design still find limited use in industry. Yet current practice has to change to cope with decreasing design times and increasing quality requirements. This research report presents results from the Esprit project FORMAT (formal methods in hardware verification) which involved the collaboration of the enterprises Siemens, Italtel, Telefonica I+D, TGI, and AHL, the research institute OFFIS, and the universities of Madrid and Passau. The work presented involves advanced specification languages for hardware design that are intuitive to the designer, like timing diagrams and state based languages, as well as their relation to VHDL and formal languages like temporal logic and a process-algebraic calculus. The results of experimental tests of the tools are also presented.
