This Element describes the development of an affective economy of violence in the early modern Dutch Republic through the circulation of images. The Element outlines that while violence became more controlled in the course of the 17th century, with fewer public executions for instance, the realm of cultural representation was filled with violent imagery: from prints, atlases and paintings, through theatres and public spectacles, to peep boxes. It shows how emotions were evoked, exploited, and controlled in this affective economy of violence based on desires, interests and exploitation. This book explores changes in emotional cultures of the early modern battlefield. Military action involves extraordinary modes of emotional experience and affective control of the soldier, and it evokes strong emotional reactions in society at large. While emotional experiences of actors and observers may differ radically, they can also be tightly connected through social interaction, cultural representations and mediatisation. The book integrates psychological, social and cultural perspectives on the battlefield, looking at emotional behaviour, expression and representation in a great variety of primary source material. In three steps it discusses the emotional practices in the army, the emotional experiences of the individual combatant and the emotions of the mediated battlefield in the visual arts.

This book offers a cross-disciplinary approach to pain and suffering in the early modern period, based on research in the fields of literary studies, art history, theatre studies, cultural history and the study of emotions. The volume’s two-fold approach to the hurt body, defining ‘hurt’ from the perspectives of both victim and beholder - as well as their combined creation of a gaze - is unique. It establishes a double perspective about the riddle of ‘cruel’ viewing by tracking the shifting cultural meanings of victims’ bodies and confronting them with the values of audiences, religious and popular institutional settings and practices of punishment. It encompasses both the victim’s presence as an image or performed event of pain and the conundrum of the look – the transmitted ‘pain’ experienced by the watching audience.

Her radical adaptations of canonical plays and popular films and her own creations of profoundly other counter-worlds are met with critical acclaim but also with bewilderment. To date, theatre studies has only scarcely engaged with the challenges her work poses. The present volume offers the first edited collection on Kennedy''s work. The contributions highlight both older and more recent productions and address the question how Kennedy''s aesthetics reanimate the theatre. They include detailed performance analyses to provide theatre scholars and critics with insights in the historical, dramaturgical, intermedial and technological aspects of Kennedy''s aesthetics. An artist talk with Susanne Kennedy concludes the volume.

This volume explores the indispensability of a transnational perspective for the construction and writing of literary histories of the Low Countries from 1200–1800. It looks at the role of mediators such as translators, printers, and editors, at characteristics of literary genres and the possibilities they offered for literary boundary crossing and adaptation, and at the role of regions and urban centers as multilingual hubs. This collection demonstrates the centrality of transnational perspectives for elucidating the complex inter-relationship between Netherlandic and European literary history. Revisiting Revenge Tragedy explores one of the most popular and influential genres of early modern theatre. Revenge tragedies resonated with audiences and authors because of their explicit and often horrific depictions of political instability, religious violence, and affective distress. In innovative and provocative ways, this book situates the political, religious, and affective dimensions of such plays within the transnational dynamics of their inception and dissemination across a conflicted Europe, raising questions for us now about authority, tyranny, and justice.
