With the advent of computers that can handle symbolic manipulations, abstract algebra can now be applied. In this book David Joyner, Richard Kreminski, and Joann Turisco introduce a wide range of abstract algebra with relevant and interesting applications, from error-correcting codes to cryptography to the group theory of Rubik's cube. They cover basic topics such as the Euclidean algorithm, encryption, and permutations. Hamming codes and Reed-Solomon codes used on today's CDs are also discussed. The authors present examples as diverse as "Rotation," available on the Nokia 7160 cell phone, bell ringing, and the game of NIM. In place of the standard treatment of group theory, which emphasizes the classification of groups, the authors highlight examples and computations. Cyclic groups, the general linear group GL( n), and the symmetric groups are emphasized. With its clear writing style and wealth of examples, Applied Abstract Algebra will be welcomed by mathematicians, computer scientists, and students alike. Each chapter includes exercises in GAP (a free computer algebra system) and MAGMA (a noncommercial computer algebra system), which are especially helpful in giving students a grasp of practical examples.

This updated and revised edition of David Joyner's entertaining "hands-on" tour of group theory and abstract algebra brings life, levity, and practicality to the topics through mathematical toys. Joyner uses permutation puzzles such as the Rubik's Cube and its variants, the 15 puzzle, the Rainbow Masterball, Merlin's Machine, the Pyraminx, and the Skewb to explain the basics of introductory algebra and group theory. Subjects covered include the Cayley graphs, symmetries, isomorphisms, wreath products, free groups, and finite fields of group theory, as well as algebraic matrices, combinatorics, and permutations. Featuring strategies for solving the puzzles and computations illustrated using the SAGE open-source computer algebra system, the second edition of Adventures in Group Theory is perfect for mathematics enthusiasts and for use as a supplementary textbook.

This book explores several unsolved problems in coding theory. Employing Sage - a free open-source mathematics program - to illustrate ideas, the book can serve as supplementary reading material in a graduate course on coding theory, or as a self-study text.
Teaching at Scale
Improving Access, Outcomes, and Impact Through Digital Instruction

Teaching at Scale explores the characteristics and parameters of large-scale online learning by identifying, in its perceived drawbacks, a wealth of educational opportunities in disguise. Scalable learning platforms have exploded in popularity over recent years, with MOOCS (massive open online courses), online degree programs, informal learning communities, and alternative credentials all drawing significant enrollments. But, as many educators are asking, are the challenges to delivering education at scale too great and the compromises too many? This book guides instructors to leverage their complex responsibilities—open-ended assessments at scale, individuated feedback to students, academic integrity in less controlled environments, and more—into significant assets. Informed by real-world institutional experience as well as key research in cognitive science and the learning sciences, each chapter provides practical strategies for educators and administrators seeking to solve problems and fulfill the high-quality, broad-access potential of large-scale instruction for lifelong learners.

David Joyner and Marshall Hampton's lucid textbook explains differential equations using the free and open-source mathematical software Sage. Since its release in 2005, Sage has acquired a substantial following among mathematicians, but its first user was Joyner, who is credited with helping famed mathematician William Stein turn the program into a usable and popular choice. Introduction to Differential Equations Using Sage extends Stein's work by creating a classroom tool that allows both differential equations and Sage to be taught concurrently. It's a creative and forward-thinking approach to math instruction. Topics include: * First-Order Differential Equations * Incorporation of Newtonian Mechanics* Second-Order Differential Equations* The Annihilator Method* Using Linear Algebra with Differential Equations* Nonlinear Systems* Partial Differential Equations* Romeo and Juliet

The Use of Aquatics in Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation and Physical Conditioning is a definitive and scientifically based text on the use and application of aquatic methodologies in both rehabilitation and physical conditioning appropriate for the general population to the elite athlete. The Use of Aquatics in Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation and Physical Conditioning represents a new generation of rehabilitation that is informative enough to be injury and sports specific. Dr. Kevin E. Wilk and Dr. David M. Joyner, along with noted domestic and international leaders in the field, explore the aquatic techniques and principles detailed in the work, while presenting this scientifically based material in an understandable and user-friendly format. Ten chapters take the reader from the history of aquatic rehabilitation and progress to discuss all parameters of aquatic rehabilitation. Some chapter topics include:• History, theory, and applications of aquatic therapy• Pool selection, facility design, and engineering considerations• Rehabilitation for the upper and lower extremities and spine• Sports-specific training• Research evidence for the benefits of aquatic exercise• Appendices, including 4 specific protocols for various lesions and disordersThe Use of Aquatics in Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation and Physical Conditioning represents a new era in the use and development of aquatic therapy in sports medicine rehabilitation and is perfect for physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, personal trainers, and sports medicine professionals alike.
Coding Theory and Cryptography

This text contains the proceedings of the Conference on Coding Theory, Cryptography and Number Theory held at the U.S. Naval Academy during October 25-26, 1998. It consists of elementary and advanced aspects of coding theory and cryptography. The coding theory contributions deal mostly with algebraic coding theory. The emphasis is on geometric Goppa codes, but there is also a paper on codes arising from combinatorial constructions. There are both historical and mathematical papers on cryptography. Several of the contributions on cryptography describe the work done by the British and their allies during World War II to crack the German and Japanese ciphers. Also described are some mathematical aspects of the Enigma rotor machine and more recent research on quantum cryptography. Moreover, there are two papers concerned with the RSA cryptosystem and related number-theoretic issues.
