This book addresses a wide range of migration-related issues in the European context and examines the socioeconomic consequences of migratory flows throughout Europe, focusing on a number of emblematic European countries. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the tension between migrants and their integration processes in the receiving country, which is deeply influenced by the attitude of the local population and the different approach to highly and less skilled immigrants. The second part analyses the impact of migration on the economic structure of the receiving country, while the third part explores the varying degree of immigrants’ socioeconomic integration in the country of destination.

But it was during the 20th century, and particularly after the Second World War, that the phenomenon of mass tourism arrived and dramatically impacted the economies of southern Europe.

This edited volume analyses when, how, and why tourism gained an important role in the economy and social life of Southern Europe. It contributes to a reassessment of mass tourism focusing on two main dimensions: first, the impact on the economic development of the different southern European countries and second, the building of a new sociality focusing on the rituals and values of middle and the working class. This book examines the political connections and trade relations between Italy and China, with particular emphasis on the second half of the 19th century and the period following the Second World War. In recent years, economic relations between the two countries have intensified as a result of increasing exchange and trade agreements, with positive impacts on their political and diplomatic relations. By studying original public sources such as the Archives of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bank of Italy and the Central State Archives in Rome, the author offers a historical perspective on the evolution of the two countries’ economic and political ties. This book analyses the evolution of the city of Rome, in particular, papal Rome, from the plague of 1656 until 1870 when it became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The authors explore papal Rome as a resilient city that had to cope with numerous crises during this period. By focusing on a selection of different crises in Rome, the book combines cultural, political, and economic history to examine key turning points in the city’s history. The book is split into chapters exploring themes such as diplomacy and international relations, disease, environmental disasters, famine, public debt, and unravels the political, economic, and social consequences of these transformative events. All the chapters are based on untapped original sources, chiefly from the State Archive in Rome, the Vatican Archives, the Rome Municipal Archives, the École Française Library, the National Library, and the Capitoline Library.

This edited collection explores the pivotal role of the hotel industry in building Western Europe’s tourism economy during the 20th century.

The book brings together ten contributions focused on the same period, 1900-1970, to offer comparative perspectives from across the region including Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and Britain. Drawing on historical case studies, chapters illuminate the different factors linking hotels and the broader tourism system including interventions of the public authorities and the State, the importance of private involvement, commercial strategies, the medium-term development of private hotels, hotel entrepreneurship, and the impact of economic crises and wars. This book illuminates for different countries and periods forms of financial assistance available for those not deemed as creditworthy – whether through the institution of the Monti di Pietà, an Italian credit instrument of the late Middle Ages, loans granted by shopkeepers, pawnbroking, or mutual aid distributed by lottery or religious institutions. The geographical diversity of the chapters enables comparative analyses to be drawn between different forms of credit and financial systems as they developed over a long period. The research presented offers new perspectives for contemporary microfinance, as well as reconstructing the experience of those living in poverty in a range of social, economic and religious contexts.
