Concilium is an international theological journal published five times a year in five languages. Drawing on literature in various fields, Felix Wilfred analyzes how religious identities intersect with the processes of globalization, modernity, and postmodernity. He illustrates how the study of religion in the Global North often revolves around questions of secularism and fundamentalism, whereas a neo-Orientalist quality often attends study of religion in the Global South. These approaches and theorizing fail to incorporate the experiences of lived religion in the South, especially in Asia. Historically, the religions in the South have played a highly significant role in resistance to the domination by the colonial forces, an important reason for the continued attachment of the peoples of the South to their religious universe. This book puts the two regions and their scholarly norms in conversation with one another, exploring the social, political, cultural, and economic implications.

La ortodoxia puede aparentemente resultar algo inocente, puesto que su preocupación es mantener la verdad y la validez de las propias creencias religiosas. Sin embargo, la historia y la experiencia han mostrado que ha sido un concepto ideológicamente cargado que ha servido como medio de exclusión, como punto de referencia para reprimir la libertad de pensamiento y como arma para «disciplinar y castigar». No diferente ha sido el caso de la ortodoxia cristiana.

En este número de Concilium confluyen diferentes sensibilidades y modos de pensar. En Asia, el silencio es asociado con la sabiduría, y quienes renuncian a palabras son considerados muni (practicantes del silencio). En contextos noratlánticos y mediterráneos, abundan sabidurías orantes y militantes. En Europa central y oriental, asolado por conflictos, un escritor como Ivo Andric postula la bondad del silencio. En ambientes sudamericanos, varios tipos de malestar van de la mano con la escucha de la vivificadora Palabra. Al interiorizar lo ofrecido por trece ensayos, cada lector/lectora puede redescubrir itinerarios y contenidos del silencio en el mundo de hoy.

El Derecho canónico es un instrumento legal al servicio de la vida del pueblo de Dios. Lo hace proporcionando un orden que determina derechos, deberes y procedimientos, para que la vida en comunidad de fe se lleve a cabo en comunión y en el espíritu del Evangelio y según las exigencias de la justicia. Pero no debemos olvidar que la comunidad de los fieles es un pueblo peregrino en marcha, con una fe dinámica que busca profundizar en la comprensión de la Palabra de Dios y ponerla en práctica.

En este año de 2017 se conmemora el V Centenario de la Reforma, porque el 31 de octubre de 1517 es la fecha en la que Lutero clavó sus 95 tesis cuestionando el poder y la legitimidad de las indulgencias. Lo que solo era una disputa teológica más entre las muchas que se dieron en el siglo XVI, se convirtió rápidamente en una guerra de panfletos a favor y en contra de las indulgencias, y sobre el poder de la Iglesia y de sus ministros para concederlas. Posteriormente, las tesis, que contenían una disputa de un modo que era habitual entonces, desencadenaron un proceso que conduciría a la ruptura de la cristiandad occidental.

Con el espíritu de recuperar las voces perdidas de los cristianismos asiáticos, Concilium entabla conversación con los teólogos asiáticos. Estas conversaciones son conscientes de que, a lo largo de toda su historia, el cristianismo en Asia, como en cualquier otra parte, se ha encontrado con voces, fes, economías, sociedades políticas y culturas diferentes. Estos encuentros no fueron intercambios neutrales, involucrados como estaban en las relaciones de los poderes coloniales. Reflexionar sobre cómo el poder se ejercía y se sigue ejerciendo en estas interacciones culturales y religiosas es una dimensión necesaria en la comprensión teológica de los cristianismos asiáticos de nuestro tiempo.
