Diesem Lehrwerk liegen die zwei Überzeugungen zugrunde, dass es erstens sinnvoll ist, Studierenden im 1. Semester vor jeder persönlichen Spezialisierung einen Einblick in das breite Arbeitsgebiet der romanischen Sprachwissenschaft zu vermitteln, und dass zweitens theoretische Reflexion in Verbindung mit unmittelbarer praktischer Umsetzung den Lern- und Behaltenseffekt potenziert. Aus diesem Grund besteht jede der dreizehn Einheiten aus drei Kapiteln: einem Aspekt des Bereichs Arbeitstechniken/Hilfsmittel (z.B.: Literatursuche; Zitat und Plagiat; Wörterbücher; Korpora), der Präsentation einer linguistischen Teildisziplin (z.B. Semiotik; Etymologie; Zweitspracherwerb) sowie einer Sprachskizze (z.B. Latein; Italienisch; Katalanisch; Kreolsprachen). Die Einführung ist bewusst so abgefasst, dass sie sich auch für das Selbststudium eignet. Wird sie als lehrveranstaltungsbegleitendes Werk eingesetzt, werden sich besonders die jedem Abschnitt folgenden zahlreichen Übungen als anregend erweisen. Auf sie wurde bei der Abfassung ganz besonderes Augenmerk gelegt. Häufig stellen die Aufgaben auch präzise Anleitungen zur Lektüre weiterführender Literatur dar, wobei deren leichte Lesbarkeit stets streng geprüft wurde. Die vierte Auflage wurde dem aktuellen Forschungsstand angepaßt und behutsam erweitert, die bewährte Grundkonzeption blieb aber unverändert.
