This book explores the complex developments that have shaped Ireland's economic development, north and south, and led to recurring crises and instability. The Irish economy has been traditionally portrayed as a product of its political divisions and the colonial legacy, divided and analysed in terms of the hegemonic tensions that exist on the island. Influenced by these divisions, academics have tended to look at a two-region approach to economic development, without adequately acknowledging the interactive nature of the island economy as a source of the crises or as a solution to systemic divergence.McCann's definitive and dynamic history of the Irish economy circumvents conventional analyses and investigates the economic development of the island economy as a whole, highlighting where aggressive differentiation has been divisive and destabilising. He concludes by considering an alternative integrated and cohesive process of economic development.

The international development sector has found itself confronting new challenges to poverty eradication and the promotion of human rights. Climate change has loomed large as a crisis for development practitioners and environmentalists, affecting the most vulnerable in the Global South. The ongoing financial crisis has created recurrent recessions in the global North, while causing budget lines to be reduced for development aid. This textbook highlights the extent to which the local and global are interconnected in today's globalised economy. It questions the legitimacy of the neoliberal model of development which propelled us into the crisis. Including chapters on Latin America, China and sub-Saharan Africa, and topics such as debt injustice, gender and migration, this completely revised third edition takes stock of the international development environment as it embarks on new policy frameworks to confront new challenges.

First published in 1997, the aim of this book is to look at the historical materialism of E.P. Thompson while introducing him as a political thinker of distinction. The study examines many aspects of Thompson’s life and work to give a comprehensive statement on his theory of historical change. It surveys the intellectual background from which he emerged; the core values of socialist humanism as understood by his generation of the Left; his contribution to history from below; his critique of structuralist Marxism; and his practical input to political dissent. The scope of this study covers fifty years of socialist polemics and offers an insight into the battles which were fought out between the old and new Left until the collapse of command-economy communism in 1989. Throughout the work of Thompson is presented as a testimony to a lineage of social thinkers as well as to the ideal of the common weal much cherished by radical practitioners of the past.

This open access book brings together leading global education (GE) practitioners and academics to, for the first time, provide a history of GE in Ireland. Ireland is regarded as a leader in the field of GE worldwide, with a rich history going back to the 1970s. Despite this, there is a lack of reflection on its role and contribution to GE internationally. This book bridges this gap, critically exploring the history of global education policy and practice in the Irish context from different perspectives from across the education spectrum in Ireland, and internationally. The contributors explore the philosophical, pedagogical and globalisation influences on GE, as well as policy trends and curriculum developments. The range of topics discussed include: GE and the sustainable development goals; global citizenship education; activism; solidarity; and critical pedagogy. The role of institutions and other stakeholders are discussed as well as the challenges for transformative practice. Alongside thematic chapters, practical case studies are introduced which illustrate GE practice over time. Relevant to practitioners of global education in Ireland and beyond, the book puts forward a critical, radical and decolonial GE.The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence.Though a globally shared experience, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected societies across the world in radically different ways. This book examines the unique implications of the pandemic in the Global South. With international contributors from a variety of disciplines including health, economics and geography, the book investigates the pandemic’s effects on development, medicine, gender (in)equality and human rights, among other issues. Its analysis illuminates further subsequent crises of interconnection, a pervasive health provision crisis and a resulting rise in socioeconomic inequality. The book’s assessment offers an urgent discourse on the ways in which the impact of COVID-19 can be mitigated in some of the most challenging socioeconomic contexts in the world.

In the period of mid-twentieth-century decolonization, when nationalism and globalism were hotly contested, East Africans nurtured regionalism in their intellectual and creative work. This book looks beyond political projects of federation to recover ideas and practices of regionalism, their remarkable longevity and their significance for understanding possibilities of radical change. In doing so, it tells a different story about the fate of the category of East Africa, building on a body of scholarship about the imagined political communities of decolonizing Africa, and rejecting narratives that explain the failure of regional integration as the immediate consequence of postcolonial authoritarianism or global economic crisis.
