The essays in this volume cover the whole of the period in which Rome dominated the Mediterranean world. The belief shared by all the contributors is that the Roman empire is best understood from the standpoint of the Mediterranean world looking in to Rome, rather than from Rome looking out. The papers focus on the development of political institutions in Rome itself and in her empire, and on the nature of the relationship between Rome and her provincial subjects. They also discuss historiographical approaches to different kinds of source material, literary and documentary - including the major Roman historians, the evidence for the pre-Roman near east, and the Christian writers of later antiquity. This volume reflects the immense complexity of the political and cultural history of the ancient Mediterranean, from the late Republic to the age of Augustine.

This volume in the series contains first and second century documents in Aramaic and Greek said to come from Nahal Se'elim and now generally held to be from Nahal Hever (the provenance of the Babatha Archive and the Bar Kokhba documents). The transitional stage of the Aramaic language is documented here for the first time. The Greek language and script closely resembles that of the Greek papyri from Egypt. The legal documents in the archive of Salome Komaise daughter of Levi from Mahoza (a village in the Roman province of Arabia) and similar documents from Judaea published here, like those of the Babatha archive, constitute the best and most authentic evidence for certain legal and social aspects of the life of Jews at the time. The evidence of assimilation of non-hellenized Jews to their environment contrasts with and complements that contained in contemporary and later rabbinic sources.

Hannah M Cotton’s collected papers focus on questions which have fascinated her for over four decades: the concrete relationships between law, language, administration and everyday life in Judaea and Nabataea in particular, and in the Roman world as a whole. Many of the papers, especially those devoted to the Judean Desert documents of the 2nd century CE have been widely cited. Others, having appeared in less accessible publications, may not have received the attention they deserve. On the whole, rather than addressing the grand narratives of world or national history, they look at the texture of life, seeking to provide tentative answers to historical questions and interpretations by paying fine attention to the details of literary and, especially, documentary evidence. The second volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae covers the inscriptions of Caesarea Maritima and the coastal region of the Middle Coast from Tel Aviv in the south to Haifa in the north from the time of Alexander to the Muslim conquest. The approx. 1,050 texts comprise all the languages used for inscriptions during this period (Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic, Samaritan, Syrian, and Persian) and are arranged according to the principal settlements and their territory. The great majority of the texts belongs to Caesarea, the capital of the province of Judaea/Syria Palaestina. No other place in Judaea has produced more Latin inscriptions than this area, reflecting the strong Roman influence on the city.

Volume VI of the CIIP covers inscriptions from southern Israel, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordanian border and from Beersheba to Eilat on the Red Sea. The chronological framework ranges from the time of Alexander the Great to the end of Byzantine rule in the 7th century. Inscriptions in all languages found in the region are included: from Nabataean to Aramaic, Armenian, and Thamudic. Most inscriptions, however, are written in Greek. There are also texts in Latin, primarily in a military context. The inscriptons are translated and commented on. The more than 1230 texts are arranged geographically according to their places of origin. They come from over 50 locations, including many almost unknown ones with only a few texts, as well as from the city of Beersheva or larger ancient settlements like Elusa, Mampsis, Nessana or Oboda.A second part mainly comprises new inscriptions for volumes CIIP I-V, which have become known to the editors since the publication of the respective volumes. There are more than 870. Also included are 50 texts from the hinterland of the Middle Coast (vol. II). Furthermore, additional data is given for about 150 inscriptions that were already published in the previous volumes I-V.
