This volume presents a collection of papers presented at the 15th International Symposium of Robotic Research (ISRR). ISRR is the biennial meeting of the International Foundation of Robotic Research (IFRR) and its 15th edition took place in Flagstaff, Arizona on December 9 to December 12, 2011. As for the previous symposia, ISRR 2011 followed up on the successful concept of a mixture of invited contributions and open submissions. Therefore approximately half of the 37 contributions were invited contributions from outstanding researchers selected by the IFRR officers and the program committee, and the other half were chosen among the open submissions after peer review. This selection process resulted in a truly excellent technical program which featured some of the very best of robotic research. The program was organized around oral presentation in a single-track format and included for the first time a small number of interactive presentations. The symposium contributions contained in this volume report on a variety of new robotics research results covering a broad spectrum including perception, manipulation, grasping, vehicles and design, navigation, control and integration, estimation and SLAM.

During the last decade of the twentieth century, computer vision made considerable progress towards the consolidation of its fundaments, in particular regarding the treatment of geometry for the evaluation of stereo image pairs and of multi-view image recordings. Scientists thus began to look at basic computer vision solutions - irrespective of the well-perceived need to perfection these further - as components which should be explored in a larger context. This volume is a post-event proceedings volume and contains selected papers based on the presentations given, and the lively discussions that ensued, during a seminar held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in October 2003. Co-sponsored by ECVision, the cognitive vision network of excellence, it was organized to further strengthen cooperation between research groups from different countries, and scientists active in related areas were invited from around the world. The 18 thoroughly revised papers presented are organized in topical sections on foundations of cognitive vision systems, recognition and categorization, learning and adaptation, representation and inference, control and systems integration, and conclusions.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the International Workshop on Sensor Based Intelligent Robots held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in October 2000. The 20 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and improved for inclusion in this book. Addressing a broad variety of aspects of the highly interdisciplinary field of robotics, the book presents three topical sections on sensing, robotics, and intelligence.

There is growing interest in the use of active control of image formation to simplify and accelerate scene understanding. AI research on machine vision emphasizes the use of declarative knowledge and explicit representation of goals to control the perceptual process. This book describes the first implemented vision system anywhere to integrate robotic camera control, ocular reflexes, reactive fixation, real-time image processing, image tracking, perceptual grouping, active 3D modeling, and object recognition. The book presents the results of the ESPRIT project BG 3038/7108 "Vision as Process" initiated in 1989. The presentation is organized as five parts which reflect the components developed for the resulting experimental test-bed system.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Computer Vision Systems, ICVS '99, held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain, in January 1999. The 32 revised full papers presented were selected from a total of 65 submissions. The book is divided in sections on vision for navigation, computer vision systems, visual tracking, knowledge-based methods and systems, architectural aspects, active vision, 3D modelling, and object recognition.

Robotics is a highly interdisciplinary research topic, that requires integ- tion of methods for mechanics, control engineering, signal processing, planning, graphics, human-computer interaction, real-time systems, applied mathematics, and software engineering to enable construction of fully operational systems. The diversity of topics needed to design, implement, and deploy such systems implies that it is almost impossible for individual teams to provide the critical mass required for such endeavours. To facilitate interaction and progresson s- sor based intelligent robotics the organisation of inter-disciplinary workshops is necessarythrough which in-depth discussion can be used for cross dissemination between di?erent disciplines. The Dagstuhlfoundation has organiseda number of workshopsonModelling and Integration of Sensor Based Intelligent Robot Systems. The Dagstuhl s- inars are all organised over a full week in a beautiful setting in the Saarland in Germany. The setting provides an ideal environment for in-depth presen- tions and rich interactions between the participants. This volume contains the papers presented during the third workshopheld over the period September 28 - October 2, 1998. All papers have been reviewed by one-three reviewers over a relativly short period. We wish to thank all the reviewers for their invaluable help in making this a high quality selection of papers. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Schloss Dagstuhl Foundation and the sta? at Springer-Verlag. Without their support the production of this volume would not have been possible.

To fully appreciate new methods developed in the area of machine vision it is necessary to have facilities which allow experimental verification of such methods. Experimental research is typically a very expensive task in terms of manpower, and consequently it is desirable to adopt standard facilities/methods which allow more efficient experimental investigations. In this volume a range of different experimental environments which facilitate construction and integration of machine vision systems is described. The environments presented cover areas such as robotics, research in individual machine vision methods, system integration, knowledge representation, and distributed computing. The set of environments covered include commercial systems, public domain software and laboratory prototype, showing the diversity of the problem of experimental research in machine vision and providing the reader with an overview of the area.

This book provides comprehensive coverage of methods for the empirical evaluation of computer vision techniques. The practical use of computer vision requires empirical evaluation to ensure that the overall system has a guaranteed performance. The book contains articles that cover the design of experiments for evaluation, range image segmentation, the evaluation of face recognition and diffusion methods, image matching using correlation methods, and the performance of medical image processing algorithms.
