Antiken har lockat filmmakare alltsedan filmens barndom. Men hur har antiken skildrats i olika tider och medier? I Svärd, sandaler och skandaler undersöker en rad skribenter från olika ämnen de uttryck antiken har tagit sig på film och i tv. Boken är den första i sitt slag på svenska. I fem avdelningar behandlas relationen mellan den antika historien och dess sentida gestaltningar i rörliga bilder, alltifrån filmens tidiga glansdagar kring år 1900 till dagens tv-skildringar. Långt ifrån alltid är det historieskrivning eller litteratur om antiken som har bestämt hur epoken framställts i visuella medier. Till exempel har scenografi och kläder bidragit till att prägla föreställningar om vad som utmärkte antiken. Epoken har även använts i politiska och ideologiska syften. Exempelvis har Noa, Leonidas, Scipio Africanus och kung Arthur varit föremål för omtolkningar som syftat till att fylla dagspolitiska behov i fascismens Italien, efterkrigstidens USA eller det unga 2000-talets Storbritannien. Svärd, sandaler och skandaler vänder sig främst till studenter och forskare i humanistiska ämnen som historia och arkeologi samt antik-, film- och religionsvetenskap, men är givetvis intressant för alla som är intresserade av hur dåtiden gestaltas i rörliga bilder.

The last era of the Roman Republic is known for its fierce political rivalries. Within a crumbling system, individuals strove for supremacy on the battlefield—and on the speaker’s platform. In the political culture of the late Roman Republic, a politician was by definition an orator. Before juries, voters, and peers, the elite competed for renown and influence, often at the expense of each other. With words, a Roman politician made many enemies. In this antagonistic political culture, morality was of central concern. Moral character showed the people who to trust with the governing of the res publica. But immorality also became an argument for verdicts at Roman trials and for political action in the Senate. Through the speeches of Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BCE), Isak Hammar traces the orator’s use of portraits of immorality and his reliance on the immoral argument as a means to persuade and influence. Historians have long been interested in knowledge - its nature and origin, and the circumstances under which it was created but it has only been in recent years that the history of knowledge has emerged as an academic field in its own right. In Circulation of Knowledge, a group of Nordic scholars explore a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to this new and exciting area of historical research. The question of knowledge in motion is central to their investigations, and especially how knowledge is transformed when it circulates between different societal arenas, literary genres, or forms of media. Reflecting on twelve empirical studies, from sixteenth-century cartography to sexology in the 1970s, the authors make a significant contribution to the growing international research on the history of knowledge.
