Der Mensch ist ein "animal symbolicum" (Cassirer), und zum Symbolisieren benutzt er Medien. Das ist zentral für Joachim Schapers Studie zur Transformation der vorexilischen, monolatrischen Jahwe-Religion in den Monotheismus der nachexilischen Zeit. Der Autor zeigt, dass der Auslöser das Entstehen einer neuen Konstellation wichtiger Medien war: Schrift, Bild und Geld. Sie führte zu einer entscheidenden Zunahme der Abstraktion in der Repräsentation, die den Übergang von der Monolatrie zum Monotheismus auslöste.

»Reformation« oder »frühbürgerliche Revolution«? Which explanatory model can be said to correspond to the events and structural changes which we typically deal with in the context of "reformation history"? The history of research in this area witnessed a heated discussion of this question in the German-speaking world in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, essentially conducted in line with the demarcations of the Cold War. With the end of the Cold War came the end of this discussion - without a real conclusion. The authors of this volume aim to shed new light on the ways in which the religious life, intellectual developments, and the economic and social upheavals of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were intertwined and interdependent, as well as on their later perception.

One of the most powerful religious ideas that emerged from antiquity is monotheism: that there is one, true God. This idea is still with us. Indeed, numerically speaking, most religious people in the world today are monotheists. The contributors to this collection of essays explore the concept of the One God, and the cultures that birthed it in antiquity – especially ancient Israel, which itself had, and was a neighbour to, a variety of notions about divinity. The authors consider different texts and contexts. With new approaches and methods, they bring a range of skills and insights to this important and fascinating topic. In so doing, they reconceptualise monotheism. This volume of essays about monotheism grew out of a remarkably well-attended online day-long conference in 2021 hosted by the Centre for the Study of the Bible at Oriel College at Oriel College Oxford and the Chair of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University of Aberdeen. Monotheism is at the heart of the nexus of biblical disciplines: it is arguably the distinctive theological hallmark of the biblical cultures situated within the complex tapestries of antiquity. It has certainly generated a major legacy in the history of religious beliefs and practices since then. This volume thus speaks to scholarly but also to wider audiences. In reconceptualising monotheism, the essay’s scholars present thoughtful discussions about what is a global idea and whose roots lie deep in the past.

In recent years, an interest in empire(s) has emerged in Assyriology, Old Testament/Hebrew Bible Studies and in other areas of the study of the ancient world. Collaborative research projects are devoted to questions of empire and imperialism, and the prophets of Israel and Judah and the books named after them are explored as agents in the contexts of the empires of their times. To some degree, all of this may be seen as a revival of the intense interest which the works of Oswald Spengler, Arnold Toynbee and Karl Wittfogel generated in the twentieth century, in historical situations very different from our own age. But then we too live in an age of transition characterized by insecurity and a lack of orientation and are driven to study the rise and fall of empires through the ages. The present volume, containing essays which are the fruits of the fifth meeting of the Aberdeen Prophecy Network, at the Lichtenberg-Kolleg of the University of Göttingen in October 2015, provides a distinctive perspective on prophecy in the context of empire. It is inspired by the fact that the book of Isaiah enables us to follow the vagaries of a particular prophetic tradition through five centuries under three different empires. The essays in the present volume focus on the history of composition of the constituent parts of the book of Isaiah as well as their correlations with the political and cultural histories of the empires under which they were produced. The volume thus navigates some of the key points of the history of Isaiah and the book named after him.

Das geschieht sowohl im Hinblick auf die institutionengeschichtliche Entwicklung in Juda und Jerusalem als auch hinsichtlich neuer theologischer Konzepte und Entwicklungen der Literaturproduktion dieser Gegend.Joachim Schaper liefert einen Beitrag zur Erforschung des perserzeitlichen Juda. Er wendet sich dabei gegen die bisher übliche Beschränkung auf rein traditionsgeschichtliche Fragestellungen und geht statt dessen konsequent historisch vor. Er rekonstruiert die Lebenswelt der Priester und Leviten jener Zeit. Dabei stellt er neue Fragen und bringt religions-, sozial- und wirtschaftsgeschichtliche Positionen miteinander ins Gespräch.Dieses Vorgehen ermöglicht ein vertieftes Verständnis der Geschichte des nachexilischen Priestertums in ihrer ganzen Vielfalt. Joachim Schaper greift vor allem die Fragestellungen und Methoden Albrecht Alts, Marc Blochs und Max Webers auf, die für die weitere Erforschung der Geschichte Israels richtungweisend sind.
