Kanon och kulturarv har diskuterats intensivt i Danmark och Sverige under de senaste åren. I Danmark har regeringens beslut att definiera en dansk kanon väckt stor debatt. I Sverige har diskussionen varit hovsammare samtidigt som ordet kulturarv har ett starkt grepp om museer, kulturmiljövård och arkiv. I Danmark har diskussionen kretsat kring vad som är danskt, vem som ska definiera danskheten och vilka konsekvenser det ska tillåtas få. I Sverige har debattinläggen handlat om kulturarvens användbarhet. Förutom i lokal, regional och nationell identitetspolitik har kulturarv kommit till användning inom en rad andra områden som hälso- och sjukvård, regional- och lokalutveckling, turism och mångkultur.
Gemensamt för de danska och svenska erfarenheterna är att varken kulturarv eller kanon kan frigöras från politiska aspekter, ett faktum som i olika grad är uppenbart i bokens artiklar. Att utse företeelser till kulturarv eller att föra upp dem på en kanonlista är att vilja något med dem. Men vad? Och vilka platser, föremål och berättelser utses? På vilka grunder? Och av vem? I Kanon och kulturarv skriver 17 forskare om olika sätt att aktivt förhålla sig till och använda det förflutna och vilka konsekvenser det får i olika sammanhang. This book examines the diverse use of Indigenous customary rights in modern landscapes from a multidisciplinary perspective. Divided into two parts, the first deals explicitly with Sámi customary rights in relation to nature conservation in the Nordic countries and Russia from a legal and historical perspective. The authors investigate how longstanding Sámi customary territorial rights have been reassessed in the context of new kinds of legislation regarding Indigenous people. They also look at the ideas behind the historical models of nature conservation. The second part deals with the ideas and implementation of new kinds of postcolonial models of nature conservation. The case of the Sámi is compared with other Indigenous people internationally with cases from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India. The work investigates how the governance of protected areas has been influenced by the principles of equality and positive discrimination, and how it has affected the possibilities of establishing adaptive co-management arrangements for specific areas. How the legal situation of Indigenous peoples has been recognised in an international context is also investigated. The volume provides a multidisciplinary analysis of how the customary livelihood of Indigenous people has adapted to modern industrialised landscapes and also how postcolonial approaches have contributed to global changes of Indigenous rights and nature conservation models.

Den fred som undertecknades i Fredrikshamn hösten 1809 var den mest svidande i Sveriges historia. I ett slag delades det svenska riket i två delar. Gränsen drogs längs Torne älv och delade de finskspråkiga socknarna mitt itu. Tornedalingarna hamnade därigenom i två olika nationalstatsprojekt, samtidigt också i två olika moderniseringsprojekt. I boken Både finsk och svensk undersöker Lars Elenius vilka konsekvenser delningen fick för den finskspråkiga minoriteten på den svenska sidan. Den långa sammanhängande tiden med Finland i en gemensam nationalstat gjorde att Svenska Tornedalen blev ett både politiskt och kulturellt omtvistat gränsområde. Under perioden 1850-1939 genomgick Svenska Tornedalen en revolutionerande modernisering som helt förändrade den finskspråkiga minoritetens livsbetingelser. Under samma tidsperiod förändrades språkpolitiken i folkskolan från en tolerant inställning till det finska språket, till en mer inskränkt assimileringspolitik. Som bakgrund till förändringen anger författaren det upplevda hotet från Ryssland, den laestadianska väckelsen och den finska nationalismen. Svenska Tornedalens integrering i den svenska nationalstaten fick djupgående konsekvenser för den finska kulturen och för det finska språket. Elenius ägnar särskilt uppmärksamhet åt språkbytesprocessen i Övertorneå kommun. Genom att jämföra moderniseringens förlopp på den svenska och finska sidan visar författaren hur olika faktorer påverkade övertorneåbornas språkstrategier. Undersökningen resulterar i en ny syn på sambandet mellan språk, etnicitet och nationalism.
