Hans Hahn (1879-1934) war einer der bedeutendsten Mathematiker dieses Jahrhunderts. Er hat zahlreiche Gebiete der Analysis entscheidend gepragt und zahlt zu den Vatern der Funktionalanalysis. Aber auch die Mabtheorie und die harmonische Analyse wurden von ihm nachhaltig angeregt, und die allgemeine Topologie verdankt ihm wesentliche Impulse. Daruber hinaus hat Hahn, als einer der Grunder des Wiener Kreises, auch die Philosophie dieses Jahrhunderts stark beeinflubt. Sowohl Kurt Godel als auch Karl Popper, von dem die Einleitung zu diesem Werk stammt, waren seine Schuler.

Karl Menger, one of the founders of dimension theory, belongs to the most original mathematicians and thinkers of the twentieth century. He was a member of the Vienna Circle and the founder of its mathematical equivalent, the Viennese Mathematical Colloquium. Both during his early years in Vienna and after his emigration to the United States, Karl Menger made significant contributions to a wide variety of mathematical fields, and greatly influenced some of his colleagues. The Selecta Mathematica contain Menger's major mathematical papers, based on a personal selection by himself out of his extensive writings. They deal with topics as diverse as topology, geometry, analysis and algebra, as well as writings on economics, sociology, logic, philosophy and mathematical results. The two volumes are a monument to the diversity and originality of Menger's ideas.

Die Frage nach dem Aufgabenkreis der Statistik im allgemeinen kann nicht mit wenigen Worten umrissen werden. Wenn man etwas näher auf die geschichtliche Entwicklung des Begriffes Statistik eingeht\ so findet man, daß lange Zeit darunter nur die Beschrei­ bung von "Staatsmerkwürdigkeiten" (wie Bevölkerungszahl, Bo­ denbeschaffenheit, Sammlung wirtschaftlicher Daten) verstanden wurde. Erst in neuerer Zeit drang die statistische Betrachtungsweise auch in die Naturwissenschaften ein (BOLTZMANN, GIBBS, MAx­ WELL). Fußend auf dem Boden der seit Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts sich rasch entwickelnden Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie hat dann ins­ besondere in den letzten dreißig Jahren auch die mathematische Statistik einen unerhörten Aufschwung genommen und die Metho­ den der statistischen Analyse mit einer kaum zu übersehenden Fülle von Gedanken bereichert. Statistische Überlegungen treten heute in den verschiedensten Wissensgebieten auf. Es genügt, wenn wir neben den Wirtschaftswissenschaften als Beispiele die Astronomie, die Biologie, die Medizin, die Psychologie, die Physik und die Soziologie anführen. Wenn es also, wie gesagt, nicht leicht ist, den allgemeinen Be­ griff der Statistik kurz zu charakterisieren, so geht man doch wohl nicht fehl, wenn man feststellt, daß sich die Statistik mit dem Studium von Erscheinungen befaßt, die entweder eine große Zahl von Individuen betreffen, oder sonst in irgendeiner Weise eine Viel­ falt von Einzelerscheinungen zusammenfassen. Man kann somit als ein Charakteristikum der Statistik das Studium der Massen­ erscheinungen betrachten. Es ist eine Erfahrungstatsache, daß bei Massenerscheinungen Gesetzmäßigkeiten nachgewiesen werden können, die bei Einzelerscheinungen kein Gegenstück haben. Das 1 Vgl. W. Die mathematische Statistik hat in den letzten 25 Jahren in Verbin­ dung mit der modernen Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung einen enormen Aufschwung genommen, der allerdings fast ausschließlich von Gelehrten außerhalb des deutschsprachigen Raumes getragen wurde. Die Ungunst der Zeit brachte es mit sich, daß die deutschsprachigen Länder von dieser Entwicklung ziemlich unberührt blieben. Die Folge davon ist, daß es wohl eine große Anzahl fremdsprachiger und vielfach ausgezeichneter Werke über den Gegenstand der mathematischen Statistik gibt, jedoch kein einziges modernes Lehrbuch in deutscher Sprache, wenn man von der Monographie von A. Lind er absieht, welche sich vor allen Dingen an den statistisch arbeitenden Naturwissenschaftler und nur in geringem Ausmaße an den Mathematiker wendet. Besonders deutlich machte sich der Mangel eines Lehrbuches während meiner mehrjährigen Lehr­ tätigkeit an der Wiener Universität und Technischen Hochschule fühlbar. Ich glaubte daher einer Aufforderung meiner Fachkollegen nach­ kommen zu sollen, meine Vorlesungen aus diesem Gegenstand, die für Mathematiker und Statistiker abgehalten werden, zu veröffentlichen. Natürlich mußten Änderungen vorgenommen werden, wie es der Charak­ ter und die Zielsetzung eines einführenden Lehrbuches erfordern. Die Darstellung umfaßt hauptsächlich jenen Bestand der mathematischen Statistik, den man heute bereits als klassisch bezeichnen könnte und der mit den Namen Fisher, Pearson und insbesondere N eyman ver­ knüpft ist. Darüber hinaus werden auch neuere Ergebnisse gebracht, wie etwa die Theorie der parameterfreien V erfahren im siebenten Ka­ pitel. Dagegen wurde, um den Charakter einer Einführung zu wahren, auf die Fragen der modernen Spieltheorie und der Theorie der Ent­scheidungsfunktionen nicht eingegangen.

He founded the Vienna Circle and was the teacher of both Kurt Gödel and Karl Popper. His seminal contributions to functional analysis and general topology had a huge impact on the development of modern analysis. Hahn’s passionate interest in the foundations of mathematics, vividly described in Sir Karl Popper’s foreword (which became his last essay), had a decisive influence upon Gödel.
