This cutting-edge collection of essays analyzes the pivotal year of 1989 and the transformation processes that resulted from a historical perspective. It takes the events of that momentous year as a pivot to explore longer-term processes of economic, social, political, and cultural transformation linked to the rise of neoliberalism and globalization since the 1970s and enduring until now.Referencing the work of Karl Polanyi, the handbook advances four main arguments: that the “great transformation” presented here started earlier than 1989; that its legacies linger in spaces, practices, and objects; that in order to grasp the scale of what happened around 1989, it is important to bring Eastern and Central Europe into conversation with other global regions; and that the former Eastern Bloc served as an important node in a larger, global transformation. Insisting on the “Second World’s” place in the global history of the past five decades, this handbook challenges straightforward core-periphery dichotomies. The contributions to this volume provide different case studies—some national, some comparative, some international or global—each illustrating particular trends and developments. The handbook is directed at students and scholars of contemporary history of East Central Europe, of global and economic history, and at scholars of sociology, anthropology, and political science interested in post-1989 transformation, neoliberalism, and globalization.

This volume deals with the reciprocal exchange between the Crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria and its neighbouring regions, presenting its inhabitants as active players in sociocultural and multi-ethnic interactions. It also sheds light upon the various annexations of Galicia: the reformation of Europe after 1918 and the emigration in existence since the 19th Century both led to its afterlife in various national narratives and made Galicia a transnational phenomenon. The instrumentalisation of the province, as well as the implicit artificiality and changeability – present from the outset – of this construct, thereby become apparent: this differs according to national narrative and time period.

In 1918 the Danube Monarchy ceased to exist and its provinces became parts of the Monarchy''s successor states, which increasingly assumed the character of nation-states. The regimes of these countries were usually oblivious and/or hostile to remnants of the erstwhile Austrian rule due to ideological reasons: they treated them as traces of a superimposed imperial power and an alien – democratic, pluralistic, liberal – tradition. Notwithstanding that fact, erasing the Habsburg Empire from maps of Europe did not entail the entire cancelation of its legacy on the former Habsburg territories. Although officially neglected or suppressed, this legacy made itself felt, overtly or tacitly, in discourses present in the public sphere of the countries that superseded the Monarchy.

How do people travel to historical spaces like Galicia today and, above all, what for? This book offers answers to those questions by analysing contemporary representations of Galicia in Polish and German-language literary texts and journalistic travel accounts. Magdalena Baran-Szoltys sheds light on the role of travels to historical spaces and then develops the thesis of Galicia as an archive/archival space in which certain themes, myths, material relics etc. are stored. She determines three types of archives: historical-literary, idiosyncratic and family. The model designed for the study of such journeys provides revealing insights and can be applied to other spaces in Europe with similar characteristics, e.g. Bukovina.
